Controlling the preferred direction of the magnetic moments is essential for the design of spintronic devices based on ultrathin films and heterostructures. As the film thickness or the temperature is increased, the easy anisotropy axis is typically reoriented from an out-of-plane direction preferred by surface and interface energy contributions to an in-plane alignment favored by the volume anisotropy terms. We study the temperature-driven spin reorientation transition in two atomic layers of Fe on W(110) using well-tempered metadynamics simulations based on a spin model parametrized by ab initio calculations and find that the transition only takes place in the presence of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). This demonstrates that the chiral DMI does not only differentiate between noncollinear spin structures of different rotational senses, but it also influences the magnetic orientation of collinear magnetic configurations.

We employ metadynamics simulations to calculate the free-energy landscape of thin ferromagnetic films and perform a systematic study of the temperature dependence of magnetic anisotropy and of the spin-reorientation transitions. By using a simple spin model we recover the well-known power-law behavior of the magnetic anisotropy energy against magnetization and present a rather detailed analysis of the spin-reorientation transitions in ultrathin films. Based on tensorial exchange interactions and anisotropy parameters derived from first-principles calculations, we perform simulations for Fe double layers deposited on Au(001) and W(110). In the case of Fe2W(110) our simulations display an out-of-plane to in-plane spin-reorientation transition in agreement with experiments.

We developed a technique to determine suitable spin models for small embedded clusters of arbitrary geometry by combining the spin-cluster expansion with the relativistic disordered local moment scheme. We present results for uncovered and covered hexagonal Co clusters on Au(111) surface, and use classical Monte Carlo simulations to study the temperature dependent properties of the systems. To test the new method we compare the calculated spin-model parameters of the uncovered clusters with those of a Co monolayer deposited on Au(111). In general, the isotropic and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions are larger between atoms at the perimeter than at the center of the clusters. For Co clusters covered by Au, both the contribution to the magnetic anisotropy and the easy axis direction of the perimeter atoms differ from those of the inner atoms due to reduced symmetry. We investigate the spin reversals of the covered clusters with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and based on the variance of the magnetization component parallel to the easy direction we suggest a technique to determine the blocking temperature of superparamagnetic particles. We also determine the Neel relaxation time from the Monte Carlo simulations and find that it satisfies the Neel-Arrhenius law with an energy barrier close to the magnetic anisotropy energy of the clusters.

MCSCF calculations are performed in order to determine the exchange coupling between the 2p electrons of the N atom and the LUMOs of the fullerene cage in the case of mono- and tri-anions of N@C-60. The exchange couplings provided our calculations are in the range of 1.5 meV which is large compared to the hyperfine interaction. The strong coupling can explain the missing EPR signal of the nitrogen in paramagnetic anions.

By using a fully relativistic embedded cluster Green's function technique we investigated the magnetic anisotropy properties of four different compact Cr trimers (equilateral triangles) and Cr mono-layers deposited on the Au(111) surface in both fcc and hcp stackings. For all trimers the magnetic ground state was found to be a frustrated 120° Néel configuration. Applying global spin rotations to the magnetic ground state, predictions of an appropriate second order spin Hamiltonian were reproduced with high accuracy by first principles calculations. For the Cr trimers with adjacent Au atoms in similar geometry, we obtained similar values for the in-plane and out-of-plane anisotropy parameters, however, the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interactions appeared to differ remarkably. For two kinds of trimers we found an unconventional magnetic ground state showing 90° in-the-plane rotation with respect to the high symmetry directions. Due to higher symmetry, the in-plane anisotropy term was missing for the mono-layers and distinctly different DM interactions were obtained for the different stackings. The chiral degeneracy of the Néel configurations was lifted by an energy less than 2 meV for the trimers, while this value increased up to about 15 meV per 3 Cr atoms for the hcp packed mono-layer.
