A combined approach was developed to utilise high-resolution ESA Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and Google Earth Engine cloud computing and field-based forest inventory data. Maps and charts were derived from vegetation indices (NDVI and Z∙NDVI) of satellite images to detect forest disturbances in the Hungarian study site for the period of 2017–2020. The NDVI maps were classified to reveal forest disturbances, and the cloud-based method successfully showed drought and frost damage in the oak-dominated Nagyerdő forest of Debrecen. Differences in the reactions to damage between tree species were visible on the index maps; therefore, a random forest machine learning classifier was applied to show the spatial distribution of dominant species. An accuracy assessment was accomplished with confusion matrices that compared classified index maps to field-surveyed data, demonstrating 99.1% producer, 71% user, and 71% total accuracies for forest damage and 81.9% for tree species. Based on the results of this study and the resilience of Google Earth Engine, the presented method has the potential to be extended to monitor all of Hungary in a faster, more accurate way using systematically collected field-data, the latest satellite imagery, and artificial intelligence.}, year = {2024}, orcid-numbers = {Molnár, Tamás/0000-0002-1489-0871; Király, Géza/0000-0003-0286-207X} } @article{MTMT:34542267, title = {The palaeoclimatic potential of recent oak tree-ring width chronologies from southwest Ukraine}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34542267}, author = {Sochová, I. and Kolář, T. and Árvai, Mátyás and Bošeľa, M. and Čufar, K. and Kern, Zoltán and Kyncl, J. and Marčiš, P. and Mészáros, Ilona and Morgós, A. and Mursa, A. and Popa, A. and Roibu, C-C. and Sopushynskyy, I. and Rybníček, M.}, doi = {10.1016/j.dendro.2024.126168}, journal-iso = {DENDROCHRONOLOGIA}, journal = {DENDROCHRONOLOGIA}, volume = {84}, unique-id = {34542267}, issn = {1125-7865}, year = {2024}, eissn = {1612-0051}, orcid-numbers = {Kern, Zoltán/0000-0003-4900-2587} } @article{MTMT:33716583, title = {Modelling natural regeneration of Oak in Saxony, Germany: identifying factors influencing the occurrence and density of regeneration}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33716583}, author = {Axer, M and Martens, S and Schlicht, R and Eisenhauer, DR and Wagner, S}, doi = {10.3832/ifor4064-015}, journal-iso = {IFOREST}, journal = {IFOREST-BIOGEOSCIENCES AND FORESTRY}, volume = {16}, unique-id = {33716583}, issn = {1971-7458}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1971-7458}, pages = {47-52} } @article{MTMT:34406370, title = {Groundwater Recharge from Below under Changing Hydro-Meteorological Conditions in a Forested and Grassland Site of the Great Hungarian Plain}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34406370}, author = {Szabó, András and Gribovszki, Zoltán and Szolgay, Ján and Kalicz, Péter and Balog, Kitti and Szalai, József and Hlavčová, Kamila and Bolla, Bence Kálmán}, doi = {10.3390/f14122328}, journal-iso = {FORESTS}, journal = {FORESTS}, volume = {14}, unique-id = {34406370}, issn = {1999-4907}, abstract = {The process of groundwater evapotranspiration and its subsequent recharge are fundamental aspects of the Earth’s natural water cycle and have significant implications for the preservation and functionality of various forested ecosystems. This study presents a case analysis examining the recent fluctuations in groundwater levels and their replenishment in two wells situated at a designated forested experimental area and a control site. The magnitude and temporal fluctuations of groundwater recharge were examined through the utilisation of a novel adaptation of the traditional White method, which was specifically tailored to the local context. We also tested the sensitivity of the White method as an indicator of the system’s behaviour because the signal has changed in relation to the access of the forests to groundwater under the conditions of regionally declining groundwater resources and a warming climate. The novelty of this approach is found in the examination of the temporal fluctuations in groundwater recharge, which are influenced by both a decrease in groundwater levels caused by forest evaporation in response to climate change and a regional reduction in groundwater supplies. Besides a great reduction in their extent in the historical times and further shifts in the land use and water management regimes intensified during the industrial era, continuing changes in the groundwater and overall hydro-climatic conditions can pose significant challenges to them. Although tree-ring analyses serve as widely used tools to assess the climatic impact on tree growth and vitality, few studies have attempted to investigate the effects of subsurface hydrology on interannual fluctuations in xylem production. In this study, we compared the tree-ring width series of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) from a forested area in southwestern Hungary with the time series of monthly groundwater depth and climatic variables over the period of 1920–2017 with a specific focus on 1961–2017. The radial growth of the studied trees showed the strongest relationship with late winter and early spring groundwater and drought conditions preceding the growing season, differing from the commonly reported climatic signals marked by early summer meteorological conditions of the vegetation season. The results suggest that the groundwater recharge during the dormant period preceding the vegetation season and the groundwater levels in early spring were among the key limiting factors on tree growth in the study area. In the growing years starting with a sufficiently high groundwater table, even scarce summer precipitation did not seem to limit radial growth drastically. However, unfavorable shifts in climatic conditions during the past few decades and the associated uncertainties in the future groundwater regime imply that additional active measures aimed at maintaining and restoring groundwater conditions may well be highly beneficial for sustaining groundwater-dependent forest ecosystems and their productivity.}, year = {2022}, eissn = {2073-4441}, orcid-numbers = {Nagy, László/0000-0003-1240-8217; Ács, Tamás/0000-0001-6788-5075; Pinke, Zsolt László/0000-0001-5644-7256; Kern, Zoltán/0000-0003-4900-2587} } @article{MTMT:33045768, title = {Climate envelope analyses suggests significant rearrangements in the distribution ranges of Central European tree species}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33045768}, author = {Illés, Gábor and Móricz, Norbert}, doi = {10.1186/s13595-022-01154-8}, journal-iso = {ANN FOREST SCI}, journal = {ANNALS OF FOREST SCIENCE}, volume = {79}, unique-id = {33045768}, issn = {1286-4560}, year = {2022}, eissn = {1297-966X}, orcid-numbers = {Illés, Gábor/0000-0001-5175-3385} } @article{MTMT:33059427, title = {Turkey oak (Quercus cerris L.) is more drought tolerant and better reflects climate variations compared to pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) in lowland mixed forests in northwestern Serbia: A stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) and radial growth approach}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33059427}, author = {Kostić, S and Levanič, T and Orlović, S and Matović, B and Stojanović, DB.}, doi = {10.1016/j.ecolind.2022.109242}, journal-iso = {ECOL INDIC}, journal = {ECOLOGICAL INDICATORS}, volume = {142}, unique-id = {33059427}, issn = {1470-160X}, year = {2022}, eissn = {1872-7034} } @article{MTMT:33153443, title = {Long-term radial growth and climate-growth relationships of Quercus petraea (Matt.) To assess and evaluate these negative effects, an experiment was conducted under semi-controlled conditions with 20 one-year-old seedlings of Quercus robur L. infected with E. alphitoides, half of them showing 50% of leaf coverage by epiphytic mycelia and the other half a coverage of 75%. Moreover, the studied parameters of slow fluorescence kinetics were also considerably influenced, with the coefficient of non-photochemical fluorescence quenching and the Stem-Volmer type non-photochemical fluorescence quenching parameters showing the fastest responses. In case of leaf stomatal traits, the decrease of stomata guard cell width coupled with the increase of stomatal density was observed as the protective mechanism of Q. robur against the stressor. A vizsgálat elsődleges célja annak kimutatása volt, hogy a műszaki beavatkozások segítségével visszaduzzasztott és kiegyensúlyozottabb évközi menetű talajvízszint hatása miként jelenik meg a fák növekedésében, illetve, hogy az évgyűrűszélességek a megváltozott körülmények között milyen érzékenyen reagálnak egy-egy aszályosabb év időjárási szélsőségeire. Az előzetes vizsgálatok kimutatták, hogy az éger állományok növekedése, az égeres területeken lévő magasabb talajvíztükör ellenére, jóval szorosabb összefüggést mutat a meteorológiai változókkal – elsősorban a nyári csapadékkal és relatív páratartalommal –, mint a tölgyeseké. A beavatkozások pozitív hatását mutathatja, hogy a SPEI aszályindex és a gyenge éves átmérőnövedékek által kijelölt, 2000 utáni legaszályosabb évek közül, a beavatkozásokat követő 2017. évben az érintett éger állományok növekedésének csökkenése jóval kisebb volt a kontroll parcelláéhoz képest, noha azt megelőzően minden esetben fordított tendencia mutatkozott. Ennek ellenére, ebben az évben az összes vizsgált állomány növekedésmenete nagyobb visszaesést mutatott, mint amekkorát a korábbi évek tapasztalata alapján az időjárási körülmények indokolhattak volna, ami egyben a sorozatos aszályok és a kedvezőtlen éghajlati trendek hatását jelezheti még az ezeket mérséklő beavatkozások mellett is.}, keywords = {KASZÓ-LIFE, talajvíz, aszály, mézgás éger, kocsányos tölgy, évgyűrűelemzés, vízháztartás}, year = {2018}, pages = {9-16}, orcid-numbers = {Nagy, László/0000-0003-1240-8217} } @article{MTMT:30336213, title = {A 781-year oak tree-ring chronology for the Middle Ages archaeological dating in Maramureș (Eastern Europe)}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/30336213}, author = {Nechita, C and Eggertsson, O and Badea, ON and Popa, I}, doi = {10.1016/j.dendro.2018.10.006}, journal-iso = {DENDROCHRONOLOGIA}, journal = {DENDROCHRONOLOGIA}, volume = {52}, unique-id = {30336213}, issn = {1125-7865}, year = {2018}, eissn = {1612-0051}, pages = {105-112} } @article{MTMT:30742373, title = {Variation of July NDVI recorded by tree-ring index of Pinus koraiensis and Abies nephrolepis forests in the southern Xiaoxing'an Mountains of northeastern China}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/30742373}, author = {Zhang, X. and Song, W. and Zhao, H. and Zhu, L. and Wang, X.}, doi = {10.13332/j.1000-1522.20180295}, journal-iso = {J BEIJING FOREST UNIV}, journal = {BEIJING LINYE DAXUE XUEBAO/JOURNAL OF BEIJING FORESTRY UNIVERSITY}, volume = {40}, unique-id = {30742373}, issn = {1000-1522}, year = {2018}, eissn = {1004-7301}, pages = {9-17} }
