AB  - Economists are divided over the potential impact of robotisation, especially when the effects on labour are considered. Several experts fear that the labour substitution effects will outpace the number of new jobs created, while others find that balancing forces will work this time as well. In this article, I focus on the impact of these processes on the Hungarian manufacturing industry, as Hungary is a good example of an FDI-dependent, production-focused country. The analysis is based on several interviews with experts and managers, mostly from the automotive industry. The result of the discussions shows that there is a growing robotisation trend in Hungary, along with the other Visegrad Four countries. While this trend decreases the number of workers needed for a certain production volume, it does not pose a serious immediate threat as it is balanced by the tendency of a lack of workforce with the necessary skills.

AB  - Processes in the past decades have resulted in the segmentation of European industries into ‘headquarter’ and ‘factory’ economies, though these categories are not fully distinct. ‘Headquarter’ economies typically host the higher value added activities and service units while ‘factory’ economies are popular locations for lower segments of the value chains. This setup has implications for EU level industrial policy strategies. In the current times of accelerating technological development and the ever growing servitisation of industries, ‘headquarter’ economies genuinely have better capabilities and resources to gain more share of the value added, and can actually steer the course of events in the sector. In the EU peripheries, new investment often covers relocation of previous technologies and retired assets of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The ‘factory’ economies are in a disadvantage in several aspects, while the headquarters optimise according to their own set of strategic preferences, which further compromises the opportunities of industrial actors in the peripheries to shape their own future. Industrial policies, however smart and well designed, have limited chances to influence the character and speed of changes. We review reported cases through which we test literature and contrast realities with aspirations regarding smart and sustainable industrial development across the EU.

AB  - While international value chains have been present in planned economies for several decades, their integration into global value chains (GVCs) began in the 1990s. In this study, we investigated the evolution of downstream value chains in Eastern Europe (including the Balkan countries, Moldova, and Ukraine) from 1995, by applying Wang's UIBE methodology and the Eora database. The results of this study suggest that European Union (EU) membership indisputably has a positive impact on GVC embeddedness, whereas non-EU economies are still integrated in their own local downstream value chains. We further investigated the automotive sector in the Central and Eastern European countries and demonstrate how deeper integration into GVCs prompted the emergence of assembly activities.

AB  - The aim of the study was to identify the geography of companies offering Industry 4.0 technologies (digital entrepreneurs), and to determine the territorial potential to develop future clusters of these activities in Poland. The identification of spatial clusters was performed on the basis of a multistage procedure, using dispersed and big data sets, based on the prevailing classification codes of economic activities and location quotient. It was found that digital entrepreneurs of Industry 4.0 show a strong concentration in a small number of cities and counties, and first of all in the core cities of the largest Polish metropolises. Strong concentration is shown especially by software and engineering services, as well as companies distributing specialised machinery and equipment. The greatest prospects for development in non-metropolitan areas are displayed by suppliers of 4.0 technologies connected with production of machines and devices and dealing with their installation and integration. Heterogeneity of Industry 4.0 technologies enables individual cities and regions, on the basis of well-recognised own potential, explore different paths of local development connected with Industry 4.0 technologies.

AB  - Az elmúlt évtizedek tapasztalatai komoly kételyeket keltenek eredményes növekedési szakaszaink hosszú távú fenntarthatóságában. Leküzdöttük-e azokat a szűk keresztmetszeteket, amelyek a konvergencia ütemét hosszú távon visszafoghatják? A magyar gazdaság szerkezetének és a 2010–2015-ös növekedési periódus vállalati fejlődésének az elemzése azt jelzi, hogy még nem. Változatlanul domináns a külföldi működőtőke-befektetések által vezérelt termelési szerkezet, amely az alacsony hozzáadottérték-tartalmú és a relatíve egyre kevesebb dolgozót foglalkoztató növekedést kizárólagosan a multinacionális vállalatok érdekeinek függvé­nyévé teszi. Még nem indult el az a belső fejlesztési korrekció, amely a tudásalapú és szolgáltató tevékenységekre támaszkodva jelentősen csökkenthetné Magyarország kitettségét a világgazdasági fejlődés ingadozásainak. Egy ilyen korrekciónak mind a központi fejlesztések terén, mind a vállalati növekedést megfelelően támogató intézményrendszer kialakításában meg kell indulnia. A tanulmány számba veszi a lemaradás e tekintetben megfigyelhető legfontosabb tényezőit, amelyekkel kapcsolatban a kibontakozás lehetőségei is megfogalmazódnak.*

AB  - A digitalizáció napjainkra a kínai gazdaság fejlesztésének, modernizációjának kulcsterületévé vált. Jelen írás e kínai „digitális nagy ugrás”, azaz a korábbi modernizációs pálya radikális átalakításának esélyeit elemzi. Az irodalom szisztematikus áttekintése alapján a szerző összegyűjti, bemutatja és elemezi azon mutatókat, amelyek számszerűsítik Kína előrehaladását az új fejlesztési pályára való áttérés során, kitérve a hagyományos mérési megközelítések hiányosságaira is. Az elemzés megállapítja, hogy számos, a nemzetközi összehasonlításban rendszeresen használt mutató valóban megerősíti a kínai modernizációs stratégiaváltás eredményeit, s alátámasztja azt az optimista forgatókönyvet, amely szerint Kína magas jövedelmű státusa a közeljövőben elérhetővé válik. Ugyanakkor szükséges néhány nehezen számszerűsíthető, általános és minőségi feltételekkel körülhatárolható tényezőt is figyelembe venni. Ez utóbbi tényezőcsoport szorosabb kapcsolatot mutat az egyes országok fejlettségi szintjével, valamint a közepes jövedelmű országok fejlődési lehetőségeivel. E sajátosságok tekintetében pedig Kínának még hosszú utat kell megtennie, hogy a magas jövedelmű kategóriába kerülhessen.*
