However, the majority dated so far formed during the Last Glacial cycle, while older ones are much less common and have mostly been dated using purely relative and/or numerically aided stratigraphic methods. Here, we describe the stratigraphic position, morphology, internal structures and optically‐stimulated‐luminescence (OSL) ages of a rare Middle Pleistocene frost wedge recovered in a sedimentary section in Dolní Chabry, Czech Republic (50.14171° N, 14.44964° E, 302 m above sea level). The wedge developed in two phases taking place during MIS 9d–8b between 307 ± 30 ka and 277 ± 22 ka, which renders it virtually the oldest infill‐dated frost wedge in Europe. The frost wedge indicates the occurrence of a cold, dry and windy climate and the existence of permafrost at least during the coldest phases of MIS 8 in the interior of the wide belt between the Fennoscandian and Alpine palaeo‐ice sheets where no direct numerical ages for permafrost proxies have yet been available. As such, the OSL dates are unique and valuable, which is further enhanced by their exceptionally old ages. Traditional methods, such as core analysis and pumping tests provide precise results but are expensive, time-consuming, and impractical for large-scale investigations. Geophysical well logging data offers an efficient and continuous alternative, though manual interpretation of well logs can be challenging and may result in ambiguous outcomes. This research introduces an automated approach using machine learning and signal processing techniques to enhance the aquifer characterization, focusing on the Quaternary system in the Debrecen area, Eastern Hungary. The proposed methodology is initiated with the imputation of missing deep resistivity logs from spontaneous potential, natural gamma ray, and medium resistivity logs utilizing a gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network. This preprocessing step significantly improved the data quality for subsequent analyses. Self-organizing maps (SOMs) are then applied to the preprocessed well logs to map the distribution of the lithological units across the groundwater system. Considering the mathematical and geological aspects, the SOMs delineated three primary lithological units: shale, shaly sand, and sand and gravel which aligned closely with drilling data. Continuous wavelet transform analysis further refined the mapping of lithological and hydrostratigraphical boundaries. The integrated methods effectively mapped the subsurface aquifer generating a 3D lithological model that simplifies the aquifer into four major hydrostratigraphical zones. The delineated lithology aligned closely with the deterministically estimated shale volume and permeability, revealing higher permeability and lower shale volume in the sandy and gravelly layers. This model provides a robust foundation for groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling and can be extended to other regions for improved aquifer management and development. Traditional methods often rely on sparse data points that lead to inaccurate representations of the complex systems. This study presents an innovative approach to the characterization of the heterogeneous groundwater systems using wireline logs analyzed by machine learning (ML) techniques to infer the lithological variations and estimate aquifer parameters within the Quaternary aquifer system in the Debrecen area, Eastern Hungary. Initially, Manhattan distance-based k-means analysis as an outliers-resistance clustering method is employed to identify distinct lithological clusters based on the well logs responses. The results of the k-means clustering were then used to train ML classifiers including linear discriminant analysis, gradient boosting, random forest, and support vector machine for automated mapping of the lithofacies distribution. Additionally, the study introduced the first application of isometric map (IsoMap) to estimate the shale content and hydraulic conductivity within the aquifer system. The IsoMapping extracts latent components that capture essential features of the wireline logs and correlate them to the aquifer parameters. The regression between the latent component and the deterministically estimated shale volume and hydraulic conductivity showed significant exponential relationships resulting in universal equations that can be used independently to estimate these parameters. For more robust estimation, genetic algorithm global optimization was applied to refine the regression parameters governing these relationships to overcome the limitations associated with linearized estimations. The proposed approach provided a fast, automated, and effective alternative for characterizing heterogeneous groundwater, offering reliable inputs for groundwater flow and contaminant transport models. A tanulmányban 593 közelmúltban digitalizált mélyfúrás karotázs korrelációjára alapozva mutatjuk be a térség negyedidőszaki rétegsorát. Az üledékföldtani egységek korát a terület magfúrásainak mágneses szuszceptibilitás adatokra épülő, közelmúltban publikált rétegtani beosztására alapozva adtuk meg. A negyedidőszaki rétegsor alapvető tagolására a pleisztocén közepi klímaromlás (Mid Pleistocene Transition) idejének (1,2 millió év) megfelelő korrelációs felszín szolgált („MPT felület”). Alatta döntően egyveretű homok sorozatokból álló rétegsor települ, fölötte finomszemű üledékek közé ágyazott kis vastagságú homokrétegek összességében fölfelé durvuló sorozata látható. Előbbit nagy méretű, intenzív oldalazó eróziót kifejtő vagy elágazó vízfolyás hozhatta létre, utóbbi kisméretű vízfolyások által épített hordalékkúp jelenlétére utalhat. Elkülöníthető egy a hordalékkúppal laterálisan érintkező, a mai Duna-völggyel párhuzamos, attól K-re eső, ártéri üledékeket csak alárendelten tartalmazó homok összlet is, melynek kora 450–250 ezer év közé tehető, s amely ismét nagyméretű vízfolyás (Duna) jelenlétét igazolja. A mágneses szuszceptibilitás és fauna adatok figyelembevételével az MPT felület alatti folyóvízi rétegsor további három egységre, a hordalékkúp összlet ugyancsak három kisebb, egyenként fölfelé durvuló üledékciklusra tagolható. Az utóbbiak bázisa fölött települő finomszemű képződmények felszín közeli regionális vagy lokális vízrekesztők lehetnek. A térképezett rétegtani egységek száma a korábbi 1–3-ról 8-ra, a térképezés alapjául szolgáló értékelt mélyfúrások száma a korábbi 66-ról (Urbancsek 1977) 593-ra emelkedett, ami a földtani modell felbontásában nagyságrendi növekedés. A bemutatott korrelációk területi kiterjesztésének és a megbízható rétegtani tagolás következetes alkalmazásának eszköze lehet a mágneses szuszceptibilitás – mint paleoklíma változások kimutatására alkalmas fizikai mennyiség – számításba vétele a vízkutató fúrások mélyfúrási geofizikai vizsgálatának tervezésekor. This is a quasi-continuous sedimentary record that provides detailed environmental reconstruction during the last four glacial/interglacial cycles. In this study, we present a standardized loess stratigraphy and illustrate how it correlates with the marine oxygen isotope and Chinese loess stratigraphical records. We argue that the loess stratigraphy in Vojvodina region is an important link in the integration of European terrestrial stratigraphical schemes and the deep-sea stratigraphical model. We highlight how the loess record can better illustrate terrestrial environmental change through multiple glacial cycles than other records, such as glacial records. The investigated loess record enables direct links to be made between the loess sediments and their glacial sources. This reveals evidence of glaciations during every glacial cycle of the Saalian Stage complex, equivalent to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 10, 8 and 6. Therefore, Serbian loess has the potential to provide a direct link between terrestrial glaciations and wider records of global climate change, which is an enigma for many other continental records. These loess records display a strong relationship with the intensity of European glaciations during different glacial cycles. Loess sedimentation rates are highest in the most intensive European glaciation of the Saalian complex (MIS 6) and much lower during the weaker ?missing? glaciations equivalent to MIS 8 and 10. A key observation from the Vojvodina loess is the gradual increase in interglacial aridity through the late Middle Pleistocene. The explanation for the progressively increasing aridity in the investigated region at this time is still unclear. However, this trend is consistent with the idea of the Saalian complex as representing a 400?ka mega glacial cycle modulated by shorter classic 100?ka glacial cycles. Three fully cored 500-m-deep boreholes were sampled at 0.5-m intervals; low-field and frequency dependent MS were measured, and complementary hysteresis and SEM-EDAX investigationswere performed on selected samples. Logged susceptibility data were also used to log correlations established by a simultaneous comparison of wireline log and laboratory measurements. Time-series analyses of the susceptibility records reveal a ∼41-ka and ∼100-ka cyclicity. Towards the source-distal sections the intensity of the ∼41-ka cycles decreases, while that of the ∼100-ka cycles remains strong. Stratigraphical and spectral similarities were observed between the Maros fluvial fan and Chinese loess records; however, based on complementary magnetic data, the magnetic phase of the Maros Fan sections is related to the detrital magnetite that originates from the catchment during early postglacial permafrost degradations. The amplification of the ∼41-ka cycles can be attributed to the very high susceptibility values in source-proximal settings and to the special stratigraphical feature of the distributive fluvial systems. This comprises the increased avulsion frequency on the fluvial fans in ‘glacial recession periods’, in concert with the ‘early postglacial’ occurrence of the permafrost-related magnetite originating from the catchment. As a local phenomenon, this is significant since it records the obliquity-driven variations in permafrost development in a catchment. However, fluvial and alluvial fans are widespread depositional landforms within the Eurasian mountain range and were possibly the same during the Quaternary deglaciations. Thus, obliquity-driven magnetic susceptibility variations in source-proximal fan deposits attached or adjacent to regions of loess deposition should also be considered when scanning for potential source material of aeolian deposits.
