YL-1 grew between 117.13 (+0.57/−0.44) ka and 114.87 (+1.63/−2.89) ka within Greenland Stadial 26, indicating a positive moisture balance during the stadial conditions in this semi-arid region. Rainfall is significantly affected by sub-cloud and surface evaporation and decreasing net effective winter precipitation is recorded by high isotope values. Enriched δ 18 O and δ 13 C at 116.65 (+0.51/−0.39) ka are interpreted as a drought event that took place ca. 400 years before the end of the MIS 5e. This event, which was reported simultaneously in marine and terrestrial archives in the Northern Hemisphere, is a result of decreased cyclone activity linked to weakening of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values of YL-1 are close to the host-rock values. Decreased 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratio at 116.67 (+0.54/−0.38) ka reflects the intensified water–rock interaction due to lower precipitation. Along with prior calcite precipitation effect, this is also observed by increased Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca, while low P, Cu, Be, Y, and Zr concentrations indicate a lowered amount of soil-derived colloidal material. The MIS 5e/5d transition is marked by reduced insolation and enriched δ 18 O at 116.24 (+0.53/−0.86) ka. The Greenland Interstadial 25 phase at 115.87 (+0.83/−1.71) ka is represented by more negative δ 18 O and δ 13 C. The Last Interglacial (LIG, ∼130–116 ka) was one of the warmest interglacials of the past 800 000 years and an important test bed for future climate conditions warmer than today. LIG temperature reconstructions from marine records and paleoclimate models show that middle and high northern latitudes were considerably warmer (by about 2 to5 ∘C) compared to today. In central Europe, the LIG has been widely studied using pollen and more recently chironomids preserved in lakesediments. While these bio-archives document temperature changes across the LIG, they are commonly poorly constrained chronologically. Speleothems and fluid inclusions contained therein offer superior age control and provide information on past climate, including qualitative and partly alsoquantitative records of temperature and precipitation. Here, we present aprecisely dated fluid-inclusion record based on seven speleothems from twocaves in the southeastern Alps (Obir and Katerloch) and use a δ2H/T transfer function to reconstruct regional LIG temperatures. We report a temperature change across the glacial–interglacial transition of 5.2±3.1 ∘C and peak temperatures at ∼127 ka of 2.4±2.8 ∘C above today's mean (1973–2002). The fluid-inclusion δ2H record of these speleothems exhibits millennial-scale events during the LIG that are not well expressed in the δ18Ocalcite. The early LIG in the southeastern Alps was marked by an important climate instability followed by progressively more stable conditions. Our record suggests that the southeastern Alps predominantly received Atlantic-derived moisture during the early and middle LIG, while more Mediterranean moisture reached the study site at the end of the LIG, buffering the speleothem δ18Ocalcite signal. The return towards colder conditions is marked by an increase in δ13Cstarting at ∼118 ka, indicating a decline in the vegetation and soil activity. AB - There is limited understanding of temperature and atmospheric circulation changes that accompany an Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) slowdown beyond the North Atlantic realm. A Peqi’in Cave (Israel) speleothem dated to the last interglacial period (LIG), 129–116 thousand years ago (ka), together with a large modern rainfall monitoring dataset, serve as the base for investigating past AMOC slowdown effects on the Eastern Mediterranean. Here, we reconstruct LIG temperatures and rainfall source using organic proxies (TEX 86 ) and fluid inclusion water d-excess . The TEX 86 data show a stepwise cooling from 19.8 ± 0.2° ( ca . 128–126 ka) to 16.5 ± 0.6 °C ( ca . 124–123 ka), while d-excess values decrease abruptly ( ca . 126 ka). The d-excess shift suggests that rainfall was derived from more zonal Mediterranean air flow during the weakened AMOC interval. Decreasing rainfall d-excess trends over the last 25 years raise the question whether similar atmospheric circulation changes are also occurring today. Furthermore, the concentration of Mg, Sr, Ba, P, Y, Zn, and Al were determined at high-resolution by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Stalagmite B7-1 grew from 10.8 to 5.8 ka BP. Stalagmite B7-7 grew during three growth phases from 11.0 to 6.2, 3.13 to 2.86 (late Bronze Age), and 1.27 to 1.15 ka BP (early Medieval Period). Aluminium is a proxy for detrital material and corresponds very well with the visible detrital layers in stalagmite B7-1 and the oldest growth phase of stalagmite B7-7. The two younger growth phases of stalagmite B7-7 are very clean and show very low Al concentrations. Phosphorus, Y, and Zn show positive correlations in both stalagmites and all growth phases, but do not show a relationship to temperature or precipitation. This may be related to the elevated detrital content in both stalagmites. Barium and Sr also show a positive correlation in both stalagmites and all growth phases, which is related to their dependency on growth rate. Magnesium is most probably influenced by prior calcite precipitation and therefore a proxy for past precipitation/infiltration. The Mg records of stalagmite B7-1 and of the oldest growth phase of stalagmite B7-7 show decreasing Mg concentration with time reflecting decreasing prior calcite precipitation and therefore increasing precipitation during the Early to Mid-Holocene. This is consistent with other climate reconstructions from Central Europe.
