Over 200 sports nations take part in them every 4 years and represent a real organizational challenge for the host country. The organization of the games requires large financial resources that the host country would have to allocate. The Tokyo Olympics in 2020 faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which increased the price of the games, which is already a record. Economists and organizers predicted that the Games in Tokyo would have an impact of as much as 292 billion dollars on the overall economy of Japan. Economists in Japan have raised expectations that the Tokyo Olympics will sharply strengthen not only the country's tourism industry, but also the construction business, while encouraging consumption, which together would increase Japan's market business. With the appearance of the corona virus, the Olympics were postponed for one year, which eventually led to a ban on watching at the venue of the postponed event. These bans, on the one hand, increased the cost of maintenance three times, and on the other hand, reduced revenues several times, which had a great impact on the Japanese market. This paper investigates the impact of covid-19 and the Olympic Games on Japan's market operations using regression and correlation analysis. Based on the analysis, the negative impact of Covid-19 on the market operations of Japan and the positive impact of the Olympics, especially in the year of maintenance, were proven, regardless of the fact that additional funds were invested. How significant were health, economic, political, institutional, and social factors in determining the severity of government responses to the pandemic? Using data on 162 nations from March 2020 to July 2022, results show that it was mainly controlling the spread of the pandemic that led nations to more serve measures against the pandemic. These efforts were tempered in nations that had larger governments and in those with better enforcement and the ones with more elderly. On the other hand, economic prosperity, political structures, macro-level uncertainties, trade openness, and corruption did not appreciably matter. We also consider the influences of firms' characteristics, the role of the government, economy-wide attributes, and industry type. The estimation uses a logit strategy, with country-year level clustered standard errors reported and industry fixed-effects included. Results show that, with somewhat limited statistical support, firms with female managers were more likely to exit, while those with female owners were less likely to. Further, fertility and gender inequality made firms' exit more likely. Larger and older firms were less likely to exit. Finally, firms located in urbanized nations and those located in nations with larger governments were more likely to close, while the reverse was true in nations with better governance. We find weak support for the notion that heightened and aggressive government efforts to control the pandemic contributed to business closures. Finally, we find that various firm-level and macro factors impact firms' exit during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the pandemic has left scars. To this end, it employs out-of-sample forecasting models and detailed stock market data for 30 sectors and disaggregated current account data for the 3 years after the first case occurred. The findings indicate that stock prices in sectors such as tourism, education, and cosmetics remain far below forecasted values after three years. Office equipment and semiconductor stock prices initially fell more than predicted but have since recovered. Other sectors such as bicycle parts and home appliances gained at first but are now performing as expected. Sectors such as home delivery and electronic entertainment continue to outperform. The results also indicate that income flows from Japanese investments abroad are much larger than forecasted, keeping the Japanese current account in surplus even as imports of oil and commodities have created persistent trade deficits. Since the travails of hard-hit sectors such as tourism reflect their exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic rather than bad choices made by firms, policymakers should consider employing cost-effective ways to stimulate economic activity in these sectors.
