The research on the stability and periodic motions of the DVA model plays an important role in revealing its complex vibration modes and energy transfer. The aim of this paper is to study the stability and periodic motions of a two-degrees-of-freedom system coupled with an encapsulated nonsmooth dynamic vibration absorber under low-frequency forced excitation. Based on the slow–fast method, the model is transformed into a six-dimensional piecewise smooth system coupling two time scales. The existence and stability of the admissible equilibrium points for the model are discussed under different parameter conditions. Based on the first integrals, the Melnikov vector function of the nonsmooth dynamic vibration absorber model is calculated. The existence and number of periodic orbits bifurcated from a family of periodic orbits under different parameters are discussed. The phase diagram configuration of periodic orbits is given based on numerical simulation. The results obtained in this paper offer a new perspective for vibration analysis and parameter control for nonsmooth dynamic vibration absorbers. Prior research has focused on piecewise-smooth systems with two or three distinct regions, but less attention is devoted to systems with more regions (i.e., multi-segmented systems). In this work, numerical analysis is performed on a dynamical system with multi-segmented freeplay, in which there are four stiffness transitions and five distinct regions in the phase space. The effects of the multi-segmented parameters are studied through bifurcation diagram evolution along with induced multi-stable behavior and different bifurcations. These phenomena are interrogated through various tools, such as harmonic balance, basins of attraction, phase planes, and Poincare section analysis. Results show that among the three multi-segmented parameters, the asymmetry has the strongest effect on the response of the system. All kinematical constrains are also been considered at the time of modeling. Generally the traditional dynamical differential equations are solved to predict the nature of the system. In this work, some typical types of dynamical mechanical system in taken into consideration and further the dynamical equations are being solved using ‘Series Solutions Technique’ for the analysis of the nonlinear system. The solution is consisting of two sections. Using frequency response analysis via simulation, which section of the solution is more suitable or effective for the designing purpose has also been explained in detail. Finally, the local stability analysis of the entire system is studied in detail with proper numerical simulation. In order to approximate the statistical characteristics for each significant output of piecewise linear system, a method based on transmissibility factors is applied. A stochastic linear system with the same transmissibility factor is attached, and the statistical parameters of the studied output corresponding to random excitation having rational spectral densities are determined by solving the associated Lyapunov equation. Using the attached linear systems for root mean square and for standard deviation of displacement, the shift of the sprung mass average position in a dynamic regime, due to damping or stiffness asymmetry, can be predicted with a good accuracy for stationary random input. The obtained results are compared with those determined by the Gaussian equivalent linearization method and by the numerical integration of asymmetric piecewise linear system equations. It is shown that the piecewise linear systems with asymmetrical damping and stiffness characteristics can provide a better vibration isolation (lower force transmissibility) than the linear system.
