És aztán jött Trianon, gyászpompa és harangzúgás, nagy fogadkozások: "Nem, nem soha". 1920 nyarán megszületett a jelszó is: "Csonka Magyarország nem ország, egész Magyarország mennyország." Az 1920-június 4-én aláírt békeszerződés megfosztotta Magyarországot területei kétharmadától, a magyarság egyharmada a határon kívül került. Trianont korszakválasztónak tekinti mindenki, de az ország szétdarabolásának fájdalmas emlékezete eltakar más, mélyebb törésvonalakat. Elhomályosítja, hogy a 400 év után újra függetlenné lett Magyarországot egyéb módon is szétszabdalták, megcsonkították belső konfliktusai. A bűnbakká lett, meghasonlott zsidóság, az egymásra is fenekedő keresztények, a panamázó politikusok és dühös kispolgárok, a vagonlakó menekült vagy éppen hirtelen beérkezett erdélyiek, az egyaránt földre vágyó cifra kisgazdák és rongyos parasztok, a gátlástalanul gazdagodó nagypolgárok és az úri muriban tönkremenő földesurak küzdelméből az elkövetkező években kiformálódott a felemás, boldog-boldogtalan Csonka-Magyarország. Amely ma is velünk van abban a "hideg polgárháborúban" amelynek 1919-1922 közötti, Kun Béla bukásától Horthy Miklós felemelkedésén át Bethlen István hatalmának megszilárdulásáig tartó nyitó korszakát tárgyalja ez a kötet.
