The current chronological framework is primarily restricted to K–Ar dates. We present here new laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry U–Pb zircon age data for 20 subvolcanic and volcanic rocks from eight different Cenozoic volcanic–intrusive complexes and from Jurassic and Cretaceous lava flows. Our results support magmatic ages between c. 14 and c. 7 Ma, with Uroi, an alkaline intrusion, occurring significantly later at c. 1.5 Ma. Revising the timeline for the South Apuseni Mountains palaeomagnetic rotations shows that most of the clockwise vertical-axis rotation of these mountains (54.4° ± 10.7°) took place between c. 14 and 11 Ma, the age interval when the majority of the magmas were emplaced. Xenocrystic zircon dates show differences in the age populations between individual volcanic–intrusive complexes. A Permo-Triassic population is almost ubiquitous, indicating that basement Permo-Triassic igneous rocks are more widespread than previously thought, or that they were significantly involved in the generation of Neogene magmas. However, other observed age populations, such as Triassic or Paleogene, have no clear correspondence in the known geological record, indicating the presence of a cryptic component interacting with Neogene magmas. The detrital zircons of all nappes show Variscan ages and are characterized by a Minoan-type age spectrum, which is typical for the NE margin of Gondwana. Parts of the metasedimentary rocks are unexpectedly young. Their detrital zircon ages continue via the Permian until the Late Triassic, Middle Jurassic and Early Cretaceous. The high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Asterousia crystalline complex are likely equivalents of the low-grade metamorphic trench and fore-arc deposits of the Vatos nappe pointing to Late Cretaceous slab roll back. The presence of both late Permian detrital zircons and Late Cretaceous arc-type granitoids suggest that the Uppermost Unit of Crete is derived from the late Permian/Late Cretaceous magmatic belt situated north of the Sava–Vardar–Izmir–Ankara Suture in the Strandja–Rhodope area. To achieve their recent position on Crete, the nappes had to travel more than 500 km. The traveling path is well tracked by rocks of the Upper Cycladic Unit, which are similar to those of the Uppermost Unit of Crete. The large displacement of the Cretan nappes was controlled not only by nappe transport, but probably also by dextral strike–slip along the North Anatolian Fault Zone and related counterclockwise rotation of the Anatolian block since the Eocene. AB - Paleogene karst bauxites in the northeastern Transdanubian Range and their cover sequences provide valuable sedimentary archives, despite their weathered nature and vague paleontological records. U–Pb detrital zircon geochronology combined with heavy mineral analysis indicates ‘local’ Alpine aeolian and fluvial sources and ‘distant’ aeolian sources connected to the Bohemian Massif. Records of episodic Paleogene volcanic eruptions related to igneous complexes of the Adamello and probably also the Bergell, Recsk and Balkan Peninsula, are reflected by euhedral zircon crystals. Their U–Pb geochronology supplies age constraints for the phases of subaerial exposure of the karstic surface and the accumulation of bauxitic protoliths and helps to improve the existing stratigraphic records and to define stages of denudation in the northeastern Transdanubian Range. Distinct phases of subaerial exposure and accumulation of the bauxite's protoliths are identified as ca. 42, 35 and 31 Ma; alternating with episodes of subsidence, represented by siliciclastic and carbonatic sequences at ca. 38, 32 and 31 Ma. Besides Paleogene volcanism, zircon dating also revealed contributions from the Middle Triassic tuffs of the Transdanubian Range. Garnet, epidote, kyanite, staurolite, and xenotime/monazite crystals suggest fluvial drainage of diverse metamorphic units of the Austroalpine basement from the Eastern- and Southern Alps, which also supplied most of the pre-Mesozoic zircons. However, the unexpectedly high proportion of Variscan ages in the bauxites most likely relate to igneous rocks of the Bohemian Massif, thus suggesting additional long-distance aeolian sources. The new data allow for detailed reconstructions of the Paleogene evolution and palaeogeography of the northeastern Transdanubian range. K 108375 and K 131690). AB - The Szeged Basin (S Hungary) occupies a relatively central position within the European Alpine–Carpathian–Dinaride orogenic belt. An ongoing controversy about the tectonic position of the study area indicates that its evolution is still not fully understood; however, several important hydrocarbon occurrences are known in the fractured basement reservoirs. The main aim of this contribution is to investigate the petrographic features and possible Alpine metamorphic conditions of volcanic/volcanoclastic and siliciclastic rocks from the Kelebia basement area. Due to the outcrop conditions and poor exposure, study samples are obtained from cores and core chips resulting from oil exploration. Based on an evaluation of petrographic (including also cathodoluminescence analysis) and microstructural features, joined with mineralogical and metamorphic data such as “illite crystallinity” and K-white mica crystallite size obtained by X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), a very low- to low-grade (ca. 300°C) Alpine metamorphic imprint of this portion of the basement can be proposed. Several deformation characteristics (deformation lamellae in quartz, deformation twins in dolomite, fragmented porphyroclasts, and strain shadows) were recognized in the studied samples, showing a weakly to moderately developed disjunctive foliation in the Permian rocks, as well as quartz veinlets, microcracks, and fluid inclusion planes in the Lower Triassic sandstones. Most likely, one of the Cretaceous orogenic events, namely, the “Turonian” phase (Early–Late Cretaceous nappe stacking), resulted in the prograde greenschist facies metamorphism in the study area, instead of the burial depth. We propose that the Permo-Triassic cover succession was also affected by shearing episodes accompanied by fluid migrations along the contact zone between the tectonic units. The scientific approach and dataset provided here are examples of how the application of XRPD parameters of phyllosilicates and micropetrographic observations can help to understand the evolution of an orogen and improve knowledge about the basement structure.
