      <abstractText>CoCrFeMnNi multi-principal element alloy films were grown by direct current magnetron sputtering in a mixture of argon and air. The air fraction was varied from 4 to 50%, which resulted in a change of the phase state of the growing film. A 〈100〉 preferred orientation face centered cubic metal (doped with O and N) structure develops below 12% of air. Between 12 and 30% air, a two phase 〈100〉 preferred orientation face centered cubic metal + oxynitride (B1) structure forms. Above 30% of air a single phase B1 oxynitride structure is observed. Compared to nitrogen, oxygen is preferentially incorporated into the growing structures. The 〈100〉 preferential orientation is the result of selective nucleation (below 30% of air) or competing growth (above 30% of air) of the forming crystals. Detailed microscopic analysis shows a complex structure for both the metal and the oxynitride phase in the films deposited at low and high air fraction. In both cases, the films are characterized by local structures ordered on a few nanometer scale and their formation is explained as a result of spinodal decomposition of the as-formed homogenous structure which occurs during film growth.</abstractText>

      <abstractText>A thermodynamic approach based on the concept of nonlocal thermoelastic peaks (NTP), which are generated by implanted ions, is used to explain the structure formation and stress state in TiN coatings synthesized by plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition by filtered vacuum-arc plasma. The radius, the depth of the accumulation and the temperature in the NTP are determined, depending on the energy that the ions acquire under the action of the accelerating potential. The structure and compressive stress level in the coatings are considered together, as a result of the competition between two different atomistic processes in the NTP: radiation-induced defects formation and their removal due to thermal migration. It is supposed that the result of competition provides a minimum of free energy of the synthesized coating. A structure-stress state diagram of nitride coatings deposited under conditions of ion implantation is proposed. Relaxation processes in coatings associated with decrease of stress and change of texture from [111] to [110] or [100] are activated when the peaks temperature exceeds 1/3 of the melting point T-m.</abstractText>

      <abstractText>This work focuses on the anisotropic deformation and fracture mechanisms of a typical physical vapor deposited TiN/ZrN multilayer, employing novel nanoindentation and micropillar compression techniques. The results highlight a stronger nanoindentation response of the multilayer when loaded perpendicular (90 degrees) to the layer orientation, and the deformation was mainly controlled by the plasticity of ZrN layers. In comparison, at parallel (0 degrees) orientation, the kink banding and the induced cracking may weaken the constraint beneath the indenter, thus leading to degraded hardness. By considering the anisotropic deformation mechanisms, nanoindentation finite element modeling was further performed to give reliable predictions on the strength at the inclined orientation. The modeling results suggest a dominant deformation mechanism that occurred mainly in the ZrN layers, with minor contribution from the stiff TiN layers. As a result, a minimized hardness was predicted at 45 degrees loading direction with respect to layer orientation. Finally, the micropillar compressions show a brittle nature of both 90 degrees and 0 degrees oriented micropillars, and a higher fracture strain was obtained at 90 degrees, due to the observed crack termination mechanism at this orientation.</abstractText>
