The applicability of the new ab initio optimization method is demonstrated for Fe chains deposited on different metallic substrates. The optimized magnetic ground states of the Fe chains on Rh(111) are analyzed in details and a good comparison is found with those obtained from an extended Heisenberg model containing first principles based interaction parameters. Moreover, the effect of the different bilinear spin-spin interactions in the formation of the magnetic ground states is monitored. In case of Fe chains on Nb(110) spin-spiral configurations with opposite rotational sense are found as compared to previous spin-model results which hints on the importance of higher order chiral interactions. The wavelength of the spin-spiral states of Fe chains on Re(0001) was obtained in good agreement with scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. Magnetic materials offer a versatile platform that is particularly amenable for the exploration of topological spin solitons in real space such as skyrmions. First identified in non-centrosymmetric bulk materials, the rapidly growing zoology of materials systems hosting skyrmions and related topological spin solitons includes bulk compounds, surfaces, thin films, heterostructures, nano-wires and nano-dots. This underscores an exceptional potential for major breakthroughs ranging from fundamental questions to applications as driven by an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas between areas in magnetism which traditionally have been pursued rather independently. The skyrmionics Roadmap provides a review of the present state of the art and the wide range of research directions and strategies currently under way. These are, for instance, motivated by the identification of the fundamental structural properties of skyrmions and related textures, processes of nucleation and annihilation in the presence of non-trivial topological winding, an exceptionally efficient coupling to spin currents generating spin transfer torques at tiny current densities, as well as the capability to purpose-design broad-band spin dynamic and logic devices. The formalism is implemented in a real space—linear muffin-tin orbital—atomic sphere approximation (RS-LMTO-ASA) method. We have chosen the Cr triangular trimer on Au(111) and Mn triangular trimers on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces as numerical examples. The results show that the DMI (module and direction) is drastically different between collinear and non-collinear states. Based on the relation between the spin and charge currents flowing in the system and their coupling to the non-collinear magnetic configuration of the triangular trimer, we demonstrate that the DMI interaction can be significant, even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. This is shown to emanate from the non-collinear magnetic structure, that can induce significant spin and charge currents even with spin-orbit coupling is ignored. © 2020, The Author(s). We found that the chains' magnetic and structural stability strongly depends on the oxygen concentration, η. It is determined that there exist competing direct ferromagnetic and indirect antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in the doped-oxygen 1D linear chains, and in general, the oxygen doping stabilizes the antiferromagnetism. For pure Co linear chains and low oxygen concentrations, in which η ≤ 0.1 monolayers (ML), the ferromagnetic solution is the ground-state magnetic configuration. For η > 0.2 ML, the antiferromagnetic arrangement stabilizes through superexchange interactions. The strong influence regarding the oxygen-doping on the Co linear chains' structural properties is evidenced when a small dimerization between the Co atoms at low O concentrations emerges. In contrast, dimerization in the Co chains is suppressed when the system is "oxygen-free"or η > 0.2 ML. The increase of oxygen concentration strengthens the pd hybridization between Co d-states and O p-states, leading to an electronic redistribution of the majority and minority bands of the Co d-states. Such a redistribution yields to the formation of more localized bands. A significant reduction of the local magnetic moment in the Co atoms is followed. The robustness of the DFT + U results is also discussed to some extent. Throughout a perturbative analysis, we also investigate the oxygen dependence on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) for the Co-oxide chains, which ranges from 0.4 to 1.2 meV. Interestingly, magnetization directions canted to the wires' direction or perpendicular to the Rh terrace are determined. Their origins are discussed in terms of the local contributions to the MAE. © 2020 ACS. All rights reserved. LA - English DB - MTMT ER - TY - JOUR AU - Lounis, S.
