The aim of this study is to identify and quantify the factors significantly contributing to the development of agro-tourism, taking into account the role of community and government support, economic benefits, environmental and social impacts, as well as infrastructure and safety. The results indicate that community and government support crucially influence agro-tourism development, while economic benefits and environmental and social impacts have a smaller but positive influence. Infrastructure and safety show the least impact. This study is significant as it provides empirical evidence on factors contributing to agro-tourism development, enabling decision-makers, practitioners, and communities to strategically enhance and support the growth of this sector. The innovation of the study lies in its comprehensive approach, integrating multidimensional analysis of the impacts of various factors on agro-tourism development, which has not been extensively explored before, thus offering new insights and guidelines for more effective policies and practices in this field. In recent years there has been a notable increase in the international student body globally as well as an increase in the diversity of the students. Considering this background, it is imperative to investigate the social experiences of this group of students. The current research investigates experiences of discrimination among international students and how they influence their ethnic identity and psychological well-being. A sample of 386 students was recruited from 2 universities in Northern Cyprus using a convenience sampling technique. The findings show a positive relationship between discrimination and psychological distress. The findings also show that ethnic identity is negatively correlated with discrimination and psychological distress. International students who reported higher scores of discrimination showed higher levels of stress and depression. This is because discrimination would result in social exclusion or isolation. High levels of discrimination are associated with low ethnic identity scores among international students. The study shows that ethnic identity does not mediate the impact of discrimination on psychological well-being (psychological distress, depression, anxiety, stress). The findings also show that there are significant differences in discrimination based on race and religion this may be linked to cultural distance between the host and home countries. Considering these findings, educational institutions should increase support services offered to international students, offer awareness and sensitivity training for multicultural interactions and, also incorporate authentic sustainability curricula. Over the past year, the Kazakhstani tourism market has exhibited significant potential for the growth of domestic tourism, highlighting the need to explore innovative approaches to counter the widespread disruptions caused by COVID-19 in the global tourism industry. The pandemic has not only resulted in considerable financial losses and damages to the tourism sector worldwide but has also had a profound impact on individuals' stress levels and their overall satisfaction of essential needs. This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of domestic tourism trends in recent years, evaluates the current state of the tourism industry in the face of a pandemic, and explores mechanisms that can effectively attract local tourists, encouraging them to explore their own country and contribute to the development of domestic tourism destinations. It is important to note that prior to the pandemic, Kazakhstani tourists predominantly favored outbound travel destinations, resulting in a notably low proportion of local tourists. Nevertheless, this investigation reveals that tourism destinations can be advanced by targeting local tourists, particularly those engaging in social tourism initiatives. One notable strategy for destination promotion is to motivate the local population to explore the diverse offerings within their own country, fostering a sense of pride and excitement about domestic travel experiences. This research thus offers valuable insights into the potential revitalization of the tourism sector in Kazakhstan amidst the ongoing challenges posed by COVID-19. Thus, it is understood that the sustainable development goals 2015–2030 (SDGs) need to be substantially operationalized in these institutions. Based on this idea, the QualEnv (quality and environment) consortium of universities stands out for having as its main objective the increase in contribution to sustainable development (SD) by universities through the implementation of systematic environmental practices and quality processes in line with the SDGs. The objective of this article is to present how the QualEnv consortium of HEIs adopts the SDGs and demonstrates their contribution to SD. For this purpose, a qualitative analysis was performed based on documentary research, a systematic review of the literature, and notes collected from participant observations. The results show that the adoption of the SDGs in the QualEnv consortium was enhanced by the contribution of the social relations within the partnership, which promoted the exchange of experiences and synergy between participants that promoted improvements in the necessary strategies. Along with the highlighted actions and concentration of different axes with dispersed interventions, a potential for central cohesion and focus on evolution in each SDG was noted. The adoption of the same indicators involves the unification of the actions planned for the SD and the common objective of involving communities more consistently, which impacts mainly SDG 04. This article discusses the practical implications in HEIs and the need to integrate the SDGs into their activities, as it demonstrates how universities belonging to the QualEnv consortium have been creating their own strategies to achieve the 2030 agenda and adopt the SDGs. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can elicit muscular contractions that create strain on bone. However, the potential effectiveness of NMES on the proximal femur during disuse is not known. METHODS: We measured the maximum isometric force of NMES-induced contractions of the rectus femoris and the hamstrings of 10 subjects (5 male, 5 female), sitting with the hips and knees at 90 degrees of flexion. We employed 2-D biomechanical models of the knee and hip to estimate the hip joint reaction forces, applied these forces to a generic femur finite element analysis model, and qualitatively compared the peak principal strains of the proximal femoral neck to the peak strains modeled in previous studies for other forms of exercise. RESULTS: The average peak tensile/compressive strains were 1380 ± 719 µε/-2179 ± 1130 µε and 573 ± 345 µε/-900 ± 543 µε for the male and female subjects, respectively. While results varied between studies, the strains achieved during NMES generally were comparable to those achieved during walking or stairs, with some individuals matching higher intensity activities. DISCUSSION: This study demonstrated that isometric NMES contractions of the thigh muscles can create strain in the proximal femoral neck similar to that achieved during low impact activities. While NMES alone will unlikely create a sufficient daily strain stimulus to prevent bone loss, it will likely improve the current spaceflight countermeasures by adding more frequent loading throughout the day. AB - It is vital to enforce the distinguished assimilation of sustainability entities in higher education (HE) and establish an academia-wide collective curriculum on sustainability in an efficient manner, in order to disseminate and stimulate thoughts with forthcoming generations. The remit of this paper is to document the available literature and map the research landscape into a coherent taxonomy. This research adds to the available literature; moreover, it could also aid in the community comprehension of education in sustainable development (ESD) implementation and/or integration into higher education institutions (HEIs). We perform an attentive search in relation to education sustainable development (ESD) in three relevant electronic databases, namely, Web of Science (WoS), ScienceDirect and IEEE Xplore. The result of the review is a taxonomy that includes 148 articles published between early 2014 and mid-2019 that were then categorized into six classes, namely, the accomplishment of SD, awareness and commitment, evaluation and commentary, structural transformation, course coordination and university management. Additionally, we acknowledge varied involvement from different levels of communities supporting and promoting education to achieve sustainable development (SD). In this context, there is a growing trend to develop multidisciplinary approaches to education for sustainable development, and to implement student-centered and problem-based teaching and learning methods to increase student satisfaction and engagement. The method presented here uses an online role-play simulation in which the students represent several stakeholders from the microfinance sector in Uganda, for the overall purpose of increasing financial and social inclusion levels in the country. Several Sustainable Development Goals are addressed from the perspective of interactions between different actors and their specific characteristics, objectives, and interests. This study uses post-simulation data to explore the students' perceptions about the usefulness of this methodology to foster key cognitive, skill-based, and affective learning outcomes. The implementation of this teaching and learning methodology demonstrated that this active learning method helps students acquire the set of skills and abilities that are expected of graduate students in economics, business, and management, with a special focus on sustainability criteria. Thanks to the methodology in this study, students are able to understand the complexities of the microfinance sector and its potential to tackle poverty and inequality. The research was conducted during academic year 2019-2020 in the context of the Master's Degree in Educational Research for Teachers' Professional Development. The changes related to Education for Sustainability, the knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals, and methodological strategies to integrate both were analysed. An initial and a final questionnaire as well as the activities developed by the students during the course were used to gather information. An analysis was performed of three dimensions (Education for Sustainability, the Sustainable Development Goals, and methodological strategies) with the help of the NVivo 12 Plus software programme. The results show progress was made in all three dimensions. The most significant changes were detected with regard to the knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals, and the majority of the student teachers indicated they knew them on completing the training process. Their perception of Education for Sustainability evolved towards more complex views, while the methodological strategies proposed at the end of the training process did not differ significantly from the initial ones. This shows it is imperative to insist on training processes that include methodological strategies. By doing so, future educational professionals will be able to incorporate Education for Sustainability into their teaching practice. AB - Sustainability and Subjective Well-Being (SWB) are strongly interrelated domains. The way students view them and prioritize their dimensions should be factored into curricular developments in education for sustainability. Instruments developed to examine sustainability and SWB preferences typically use rating scale items to measure dimensions as separate entities. In contrast, the question format used in this study forces the students to rate variables in relation to each other. The sum of both SWB and sustainability variables was fixed, which means that increasing the weight of a priority automatically meant a decrease in the weight that could be allocated for the remaining elements. Two-block Partial Least Squares (PLS) modelling was used to examine how pre-defined SWB and sustainability dimensions behave when handled within the same model. It was found that those who ordered the three sustainability dimensions as Environment > Society > Economy tended to rank SWB dimensions as (Relations with others, Inner peace) > (Health, Close to nature) > (Good job, Leisure). Our research proved that the use of question formats resembling real-life resource allocation dilemmas and the treatment of SWB and sustainability as one system can yield invaluable information for the educational process.
