In this relatively small area, almost all types of eruption products can be found from basaltic through andesitic to rhyolitic, reflecting the wide-ranging volcanism of the Pannonian Basin over the last 20 million years, which were the largest eruptions in Europe at the time. The Ipolytarnóc Site, the gateway of the geopark and possessor of a European- Diploma for Protected Areas, documents when one of these devastating eruption events buried a subtropical-forested area with thick pyroclastic deposits and preserved vertebrate footprints. On the other hand, relatively young eruptions of basaltic magmas occurred in this area that give another specific atmosphere to the geopark. Columnar jointing with concave and convex curvilinear shapes shown both by basalts and andesites is another peculiar natural value. Due to the regional uplift and the associated erosion, most of the volcanic edifices were removed and the root zones of the volcanoes were revealed, giving a special character. The volcanic heritage meets specific cultural and historical heritage, which makes this geopark a particular tourist destination. There are four visitor centers and several nature trails with explanation panels showing concise summaries of the volcanological features in three languages (Hungarian, Slovakian and English). Among the rich indoor and outdoor activities, the annual Volcano Day program in Ipolytarnóc with an interactive volcano show attracts many people. Concentrations of major and trace elements (including H) were determined in-situ in olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel by EPMA, LA-ICP-MS and FTIR. The xenoliths are refractory with high olivine (0.91-0.92) and orthopyroxene (0.92-0.93) Mg# coupled with relatively high modal proportions of clinopyroxene (5-8%) and a remarkably wide range in clinopyroxene Mg# (0.91-0.94), interpreted to reflect high degrees of partial melting followed by modal and chemical metasomatic refertilization. A fractional partial melting model of orthopyroxene trace elements in a depleted mantle indicates 20-30% of melting. Clinopyroxenes show two groups based on their CaO contents (18.7-18.9 and 20.6-22.6 wt %) suggesting a secondary origin and modal metasomatism. The low Ca clinopyroxenes were the latest to be formed, and the wide range of clinopyroxene Mg# shows a lack of equilibrium with the coexisting minerals. The high Ca clinopyroxenes record ancient metasomatic events that are also documented in orthopyroxene. Cryptic metasomatism is shown by strong progressive enrichments in LREEs and MREEs of orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene. Th vs La and Sr vs Nd of clinopyroxene are used to identify different generations of metasomatism. Ti/Eu vs (La/ Yb)(N) and Zr/Hf systematics indicate that the metasomatising agent has both a carbonatite and a silicate component. The structural hydroxyl contents of the different mineral phases are very low (< 1 ppm for olivine, 40-48 ppm for orthopyroxene and 164-277 ppm for clinopyroxene). The very low water contents compared to typical sub-continental peridotites could be attributed to the depleted nature of the xenoliths or reflect lower water activities of carbonatitic melts relative to alkaline melts. Estimated fO(2) values expressed as delta logFMQ, (where FMQ corresponds to the fayalite magnetite-quartz oxygen buffer) range from -0.42 to -0.26 and are consistent with minor OH stretching regions of 3520 cm(-1) in orthopyroxene, related to a ferric iron defect.& nbsp;The combination of textural investigations, major, and trace element and H2O data suggests that a refractory subcontinental mantle was affected by several episodes of intraplate metasomatism dominated by silicatecarbonatite melts above the North-Eastern end of the Cameroon Volcanic Line.}, keywords = {partial melting; CARBONATITE METASOMATISM; Kapsiki plateau; Harzburgites; Silicate metasomatism}, year = {2022}, eissn = {1879-1956} } @article{MTMT:32020415, title = {Mantle metasomatic influence on water contents in continental lithosphere: New constraints from garnet pyroxenite xenoliths (France & Cameroon volcanic provinces)}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32020415}, author = {Azevedo-Vannson, Samantha and France, Lydéric and Ingrin, Jannick and Chazot, Gilles}, doi = {10.1016/j.chemgeo.2021.120257}, journal-iso = {CHEM GEOL}, journal = {CHEMICAL GEOLOGY}, volume = {575}, unique-id = {32020415}, issn = {0009-2541}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1872-6836} } @article{MTMT:32593001, title = {H 2 O in omphacite of quartz and coesite eclogite from Erzgebirge and Fichtelgebirge, Germany}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32593001}, author = {Gose, Jürgen and Schmädicke, Esther}, doi = {10.1111/jmg.12642}, journal-iso = {J METAMORPH GEOL}, journal = {JOURNAL OF METAMORPHIC GEOLOGY}, volume = {1}, unique-id = {32593001}, issn = {0263-4929}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1525-1314}, pages = {1-22}, orcid-numbers = {Schmädicke, Esther/0000-0002-0522-8210} } @article{MTMT:32080418, title = {The ‘pargasosphere’ hypothesis: Looking at global plate tectonics from a new perspective}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32080418}, author = {Kovács, István János and Liptai, Nóra and Koptev, A and Cloetingh, SAPL. and Lange, Thomas Pieter and Mațenco, L and Szakács, A and Radulian, M and Berkesi, Márta and Patkó, Levente and Molnár, Gábor and Novák, Attila and Wesztergom, Viktor and Szabó, Csaba and Fancsik, Tamás}, doi = {10.1016/j.gloplacha.2021.103547}, journal-iso = {GLOBAL PLANET CHANGE}, journal = {GLOBAL AND PLANETARY CHANGE}, volume = {204}, unique-id = {32080418}, issn = {0921-8181}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1872-6364}, orcid-numbers = {Kovács, István János/0000-0002-3488-3716; Liptai, Nóra/0000-0002-2464-2468; Lange, Thomas Pieter/0000-0002-8709-9239; Berkesi, Márta/0000-0003-4380-057X; Patkó, Levente/0000-0001-6007-3103; Molnár, Gábor/0000-0001-9309-3418; Szabó, Csaba/0000-0002-1580-6344} } @CONFERENCE{MTMT:32038750, title = {Új FTIR mérési eredmények az Avas–Gutin mészalkáli vulkáni kőzeteiből: poszterupciós hatások nyomai a fenokristályok szerkezeti hidroxil-tartalmában : New FTIR data from the Oaş–Gutâi Mts. and post eruption effects on the water content of phenocrysts}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32038750}, author = {Kővágó, Ákos and KOVACS, Marinel and KESJÁR, Dóra and Szabó, Csaba and KOVÁCS, István János}, booktitle = {XXII. Detailed constraints on the melting conditions and source region are imperative to resolve this question. Here we model the geochemistry of alkali basalts and mantle nodules brought up by young (12–0.1 Ma) intraplate volcanoes distributed across the Carpathian-Pannonian region and combine the results with geophysical observations. Rare earth element inversion and forward calculation of elemental concentrations show that the basalts require the mantle to have undergone less than 1% melting in the garnet-spinel transition zone, at depths of about 63–72 km. The calculated melt distributions correspond to a mantle potential temperature of ∼1257°C, equivalent to a real temperature of 1290°C at 65 km beneath the Pannonian Basin. The composition, modal mineralogy, and clinopyroxene geochemistry of some of the entrained mantle nodules closely resemble the basalt source, though the latter equilibrated at greater depths. The gravity anomalies and topography of the Basin reveal no large-scale features that can account for the post-extensional volcanism. Instead, the lithospheric thickness and geotherm show that melting occurs because the base of the lithosphere, at ∼50-km depth, is close to or at the solidus temperature over a large part of the Basin. Hence, only a small amount of upwelling is required to produce minor volumes (up to a few cubic kilometers) of melt. We conclude that the Pannonian volcanism originates from upwelling in the asthenosphere just below thinned lithosphere, which is likely to be driven by thermal buoyancy.}, year = {2020}, eissn = {1525-2027}, orcid-numbers = {Gartner, AJJB/0000-0001-6834-713X} } @article{MTMT:31006469, title = {The role of water and compression in the genesis of alkaline basalts: Inferences from the Carpathian-Pannonian region}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/31006469}, author = {Kovács, István János and Patkó, Levente and Liptai, Nóra and Lange, Thomas Pieter and Taracsák, Z. and Cloetingh, S.A.P.L. and Török, Kálmán and Király, Edit and Karátson, Dávid and Biró, Tamás and Kiss, János and Pálos, Zsófia and Aradi, László Előd and Falus, György and Hidas, K. and Berkesi, Márta and Koptev, A. and Novák, Attila and Wesztergom, Viktor and Fancsik, Tamás and Szabó, Csaba}, doi = {10.1016/j.lithos.2019.105323}, journal-iso = {LITHOS}, journal = {LITHOS}, volume = {354-355}, unique-id = {31006469}, issn = {0024-4937}, year = {2020}, eissn = {1872-6143}, orcid-numbers = {Kovács, István János/0000-0002-3488-3716;
