Altogether 5 713 identifiable mollusc remains that cover 20 terrestrial snail species were found. Based on the dominance changes of species and palaeoecological groups and the detrended correspondence analysis (DCA), three malacological zones (Türbe Malacological Zone: TMZ) could be separated in the profile of the moat. In the first malacological zone (between 250 and 140 cm) the high number of Eurosiberian species (hygrophilous and cold resistant species, Succinea: amber snail) were found. Their presence and significant amount are in relation with the colder meso- and microclimate of the 17th century. As a result, it can be assumed that the climate of the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Carpathian Basin changed according to the micro-topography and vegetation cover, and was not uniform. In the second malacological zone (between 140 and 50 cm) the number of cold-tolerant and hygrophilous, Eurosiberian fauna elements decreased, and gradually disappeared from the profile. In parallel, mesophilous and thermophilous, open-vegetation favouring Central and South-eastern European taxa became dominant. So, the moat filled up and a dry habitat with more open vegetation, which was no longer favourable for moistureloving (and shade-loving) species developed. The third malacological zone (from 50 cm towards the surface) indicated a major transformation in the fauna composition. The ratio of mesophilous species decreased drastically. Central and South-eastern European thermophilous species, favouring open vegetation dominated in this level of the profile. Very likely, the upper 40–50 cm part of the profile was filled up at the end of the 17th century, or at the beginning of the 18th century. The changes in the malacofauna composition indicate mesoclimatic and microclimatic alterations and strong human impact. Based on our data, we need to treat climate change and its effects on agriculture in the Carpathian Basin in a more differentiated way for the 17th century, and we cannot and should not extend the negative effects of the North Atlantic to the Carpathian Basin. Understanding how early human coped with flooding will shed light on the increase of contemporary social resilience to projected intensified extreme climate change. However, assessment of such ancient human response to hydrological changes remains difficult due to the paucity of records for flood risk coupled with ancient human activities. Here, we present a two-millennium continuous reconstruction of water level changes for Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater body, using microbial tetraethers extracted from a well-dated sedimentary core. The rising trend of lake water level over the past 2000 years indicates an increase in flood risks for this fertile region that has long been populated by ancient human settlements. A comparison with spatial-temporal distribution of ancient cities and towns in the lake basin reveals that, during the first millennium, human settlements passively retreated outwards and upwards away from the lake to minimize flood risk due to the rising lake water. However, a reversal pattern occurred at similar to 1000 CE, witnessing human settlements to moving closer to lakeshore during the second millennium despite of the high water table. The strategic shift, accompanied by a booming economy in southern China during the Song Dynasty, was possibly facilitated by technology innovations, such as intensified water conservancy construction and enhanced shipbuilding, in and around the lake basin. While often used in applied management applications, integrated spatially explicit assessments of multi-faceted vulnerability and hazard less commonly appear in the scientific literature, especially those that are transferable across geographies and risk metrics. Since many geographies lack an integrated, stakeholder-driven assessment of multiple hazards and vulnerabilities within the same assessment, scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science developed a transferable and integrated community vulnerability assessment framework (Framework) that relies primarily upon available secondary data and is supplemented with stakeholder-derived primary data. Using blended approaches in stakeholder engagement, we present the Framework’s six methodological steps as recently applied in Los Angeles County, California: iterative partner engagement, indicator and index development, vulnerability assessment, hazard assessment, risk assessment, and reengagement for adaptation action. The first part of the discussion focuses on historical data, highlighting spatial aspects of trade (rearing zones/areas, major routes) in order to contextualize the results of archaeozoological examinations presented in the second part, which, in turn, is based on a geometric morphometrical analysis of cattle metapodials from different sites. The underlying hypothesis is that spatio-temporal patterns revealed by the archaeozoological analysis (connections among assemblages from different sites) are the impact of large-scale cattle trade. The authors also propose that historical interpretations, informed by fragmentary data and indirect evidence, are biased when arguing for the explicit or dominant role of the Hungarian Grey Cattle (henceforth HGC) in export trade. However, the findings of the present study reveal that the situation in the Carpathian Basin was somewhat different. The results of our research suggest that Transdanubia, the most western one of the four macro-regions in the Carpathian Basin, was undoubtedly the greatest beneficiary of the wet climate of the Little Ice Age. The agricultural production of the Upper Hungary and the Great Hungarian Plain, as reflected by the indices I was using, was moderately positive. However, in Transylvania, the yields of grain and hay were below contemporary expectations. The diverse landscape certainly helped the Transdanubian macro-region to achieve excellent adaptability. The reason for its success may be that the lack of precipitation is the most critical bottleneck in the agriculture of the Carpathian Basin. The essential feature of the climate change brought about by the Little Ice Age in the Carpathian Basin was the increase in precipitation. Our findings show that it was the Little Ice Age, and especially its wet climate, that on average provided relatively favourable conditions for the balanced performance of agriculture in the Carpathian Basin in the long-term, in the Transdanubian region in particular. The wet climate played a crucial role in the low frequency of crop catastrophes in the 18th and 19th centuries. Moreover, the mosaic structure of traditional agriculture (arable and grazing land, orchards, vineyards, meadow farming and fishery) improved the resilience of the local and regional economy in the Carpathian Basin.
