Sociolinguistic research since 1985 has now resulted in a program which embraces not only the 10 million (largely monolingual) Hungarians in Hungary proper, but also the 3 million bi- or multilingual minority Hungarians in the seven neighboring countries (kin-states). This program was initiated by researchers of the Department of Sociolinguistics in the Linguistics Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This paper offers linguists who do not read Hungarian an overview of this research carried out between 1985 and 2022.}, year = {2022}, pages = {33-65} } @article{MTMT:32215508, title = {Cercetare sociolingvistică longitudinală asupra identităţii româneşti din Ungaria}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32215508}, author = {Borbély, Anna}, doi = {10.17234/SRAZ.65.31}, journal-iso = {STUD ROMAN ANGLICA ZAGRAB}, journal = {STUDIA ROMANICA ET ANGLICA ZAGRABIENSIA}, volume = {65}, unique-id = {32215508}, issn = {0039-3339}, year = {2021}, pages = {253-259}, orcid-numbers = {Borbély, Anna/0000-0003-4090-0516} } @inbook{MTMT:32092164, title = {Phonological Variation and Change in Romanian}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32092164}, author = {Chitoran, Ioana}, booktitle = {Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Linguistics}, doi = {10.1093/acrefore/9780199384655.013.496}, unique-id = {32092164}, year = {2021} } @article{MTMT:31517437, title = {LINGUISTIC IMPERIALISM AND LINGUISTIC SUB-IMPERIALISM, AND THEIR NECESSITY: RUSSIA AND SPAIN}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/31517437}, author = {Rakhmanov, Azat B.}, doi = {10.17223/1998863X/54/18}, journal-iso = {TOMSK STATE UNIV J PHIL SOC POLIT SCI}, journal = {VESTNIK TOMSKOGO GOSUDARSTVENNOGO UNIVERSITETA-FILOSOFIYA-SOTSIOLOGIYA-POLITOLOGIYA-TOMSK STATE UNIVERSITY JOURNAL OF PHILOSOPHY SOCIOLOGY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE}, volume = {54}, unique-id = {31517437}, issn = {1998-863X}, abstract = {The author analyzes the concept of linguistic imperialism by Robert Phillipson and proposes an idea of linguistic sub-imperialism. Serving the communicative needs of people, uniting in the context of globalization, necessarily leads to the growth of the influence of English as a global language as well as of other languages of the major nations: French, Spanish, German, Russian, Chinese, etc. Wikipedia, which has already become the leading encyclopedia of the humankind, can serve as an indicator of different languages' influence. We can judge about the development of Wikipedia sections in different languages, firstly, by the number of articles in the sections, secondly, by the average quality of these articles, and, thirdly, by the rate of the increase in the number of articles. The author suggests determining the average quality of articles in Wikipedia sections using the method he developed. A comparative analysis of Wikipedia sections in different languages shows the immense superiority of English over the rest of the languages in the world, on the one hand, and the tremendous value of the large nations' languages, on the other. English as a means of worldwide communication is unparalleled, and the potential for its influence is rapidly increasing. Russian maintains its strong position on the territory of the post-Soviet Union: in all respects the usage of Wikipedia in Russian is far ahead of Wikipedia in the languages of other peoples of the territory. The author analyzes the language practices of the peoples of the republics of the Russian Federation (Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Tuva, Chuvashia, and Yakutia) using the data of the social network VKontakte. These practices and the analysis of Wikipedia in the languages of these republics discover the dominant orientation of the peoples of the republics to the use of Russian. The analysis of ethnolinguistic processes in two autonomous communities of Spain (Catalonia and the Basque Country) and the comparison of the development of Wikipedia in Spanish, Catalan, and Basque show us the inevitability of the predominance of Spanish in the language practices of Catalonia and the Basque Country. The author comes to a conclusion that linguistic imperialism and linguistic sub-imperialism are necessary in the conditions of globalization. At the same time, the undisputed goal of the worldwide language policy is to preserve the linguistic diversity of the world.}, keywords = {Spain; Russia; Wikipedia; English language; linguistic imperialism; linguistic sub-imperialism; ecology of languages}, year = {2020}, pages = {188-207} } @article{MTMT:3302522, title = {Application of modern classification methods in the study of bilingualism}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3302522}, author = {Vargha, András and Borbély, Anna}, doi = {10.1515/glot-2017-0013}, journal-iso = {GLOTTOTHEORY}, journal = {GLOTTOTHEORY: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF THEORETICAL LINGUISTICS}, volume = {8}, unique-id = {3302522}, issn = {1337-7892}, year = {2017}, eissn = {2196-6907}, pages = {203-216}, orcid-numbers = {Vargha, András/0000-0002-1126-8227; Borbély, Anna/0000-0003-4090-0516} }
