Substantial research has been performed on the transformed first-order differential equations using traditional variable substitution. However, there are few studies on bifurcation dynamics using direct analysis. In this paper, a multi-delay Hopfield neural system with inertial couplings is considered. The perturbation scheme and non-reduced order technique are firstly combined into studying multi-delay induced Hopf–Hopf singularity. This combination avoids tedious computation and overcomes the disadvantages of the traditional variable-substitution reduced-order method. In the neighbor of Hopf–Hopf interaction points, interesting dynamics are found on the plane of self-connected delay and coupled delay. Multiple delays can induce the switching of stable periodic oscillation and periodic coexistence. The explicit expressions of periodic solutions are obtained. The validity of theoretical results is shown through consistency with numerical simulations. However, it is confined to low-order approximations due to complex symbolic operations. Many variants have been developed to improve the HB method, among which the time domain HB-like methods are regarded as crucial improvements because of their fast computation and simple derivation. So far, there are two problems remaining to be addressed. i) A dozen of different versions of HB-like methods, in frequency domain or time domain or in hybrid, have been developed; unfortunately, misclassification pervades among them due to the unclear borderlines of different methods. ii) The time domain HB-like methods suffer from non-physical solutions, which have been shown to be caused by aliasing (mixture of the high-order into the low-order harmonics). Although a series of dealiasing techniques have been developed over the past two decades, the mechanism of aliasing and the final solution to dealiasing are still not well known to the academic community. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the development of HB-like methods and enunciate their principal differences. In particular, the time domain methods are emphasized with the famous aliasing phenomenon clearly addressed. LA - English DB - MTMT ER - TY - JOUR AU - Pei, Lijun AU - Chong, Antonio S. E. The Incremental Harmonic Balance Method was used to compute the period one orbits, including those exhibiting grazing and large impacts. The method of Harmonic Balance with Alternating Frequency and Time was implemented to calculate more complex orbits and multi stability. A good agreement between obtained approximate solutions and numerically calculated responses indicates robustness of the implemented HBMs, which should allow to effectively study the global dynamics of non-smooth systems. The "culprits" of this motion are, on one hand, the gravity and, on the other hand, the hormonal processes within the plant, namely, the lateral transport of the growth hormone auxin. The first mathematical analysis of the sunflower equation was conducted in the seminal work by Somolinos (1978) who gave, in particular, a sufficient condition for the solutions' boundedness and for the existence of a periodic orbit. Although more than 40 years have passed since the publication of the work by Somolinos, the sunflower equation is still far from being thoroughly studied. It is known that a periodic solution may exist only for a sufficiently large delay, whereas for small delays the equation exhibits the same qualitative behavior as a conventional pendulum, and every solution converges to one of the equilibria. However, necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of the sunflower equation (ensuring the convergence of all solutions) are still elusive. In this paper, we derive a novel condition for its stability, which is based on absolute stability theory of integro-differential pendulum-like systems developed in our previous work. As will be discussed, our estimate for the maximal delay, under which the stability can be guaranteed, improves the existing estimates and appears to be very tight for some values of the parameters. Two types of network congestion control models [the modified transmission control protocol-random early detection (TCP-RED) model and the fluid-flow TCP-additive increase multiplicative decease (AIMD)/RED model] with state-dependent round-trip time delays and non-smooth right-hand side are considered in detail. First, their dynamics and bifurcation are analyzed by the numerical analysis method. Then, the analytical approximate expressions of the periodic solutions are obtained by employing the semi-analytical method named as HB-AFT. The results of the numerical simulation and HB-AFT agree with each other very well. It indicates that the HB-AFT technique is simple, valid, effective, and accurate for the non-smooth dynamical systems with state-dependent time delays. Besides, more complicated and rich dynamical phenomena, such as period- 2 solution, period- 3 solution, chaos and the period-doubling bifurcation, and the window of period- 3 solution, which lead to chaos, are explored in the TCP-AIMD/RED model. Moreover, two different kinds of multi-stabilities, such as the coexistence of a stable period- 1 solution, a stable period- 3 solution, and an asymptotically stable equilibrium, and that of a stable period- 1 solution, a stable period- 2 solution, chaos, and an asymptotically stable equilibrium, are also discovered in the TCP-AIMD/RED congestion control model. It discloses that the interaction of the state-dependent delay and non-smooth function can easily induce the richer and more complicated dynamics. It can explain the complicated dynamical phenomena in the Internet network. Thus, the control and parameters tuning based on the above results could be used to avoid the congestion and optimize the performance. It can give the theoretical guidance to the application and research in network congestion control, which is very important in practical application. The equations can be forced or autonomous and possibly of neutral type. The approach developed in this paper requires the system of equations to be written in a quadratic formalism which is detailed. The method is applied to various systems, from Van der Pol and Duffing oscillators to toy models of clarinet and saxophone. The harmonic balance method is ascertained from a comparison to standards time-integration solvers. Bifurcation diagrams are drawn which are sometimes intricate, showing the robustness of this method. Delay-differential equations often come up in different fields of engineering, such as feedback control systems, machine tool vibrations, and balancing/stabilization with reflex delay. The behavior of such systems is often counter-intuitive and closed form analytical formulas can rarely be given even for the linear stability conditions. The same holds for parametrically excited systems. If parametric excitation is coupled with the delay effect, then the governing equation is a delay-differential equation with time-periodic coefficients, and the stability properties are even more intriguing. The semi-discretization method is a simple but efficient method that is based on the discretization with respect to the delayed term and the periodic coefficients only. This discretization results in a system of ordinary differential equations that can be solved using standard techniques, which are part of basic engineering curriculums. The method can effectively be used to construct stability charts in the space of system parameters. These charts provide a useful tool for engineers, since they present an overview on the effects of system parameters on the local dynamics of the system. The book presents the application of the method to different engineering problems, such as dynamics of turning and milling processes with constant and with varying spindle speeds, stick balancing with reflex delay, force control processes in the presence of feedback delay, and stabilization using time-periodic control gains. The book is designed for graduate and PhD students as well as researchers working in the field of delayed dynamical systems with application to mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering, control theory, biomechanics, population dynamics, neuro-physiology, and climate research. Export Date: 28 November 2019 CODEN: JVCOF AB - Act-and-wait control is a special case of time-periodic control for systems with feedback delay, where the control gains are periodically switched on and off in order to stabilize otherwise unstable systems. The stability of feedback systems in the presence of time delay is a challenging problem. In this paper, we show that the act-and-wait type time-periodic control can always provide deadbeat control for first-order unstable lag processes with any (large but) fixed value of the time delay in the feedback loop. A full characterization of this act-and-wait controller with respect to the system and control parameters is given based on performance and robustness against disturbances.
