Mapping is a critical exercise that allows an understanding of the spatial distribution of the different ES in PAs. This work aims to conduct a systematic literature review on mapping ES in PAs. In order to carry out this systematic review, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses method was applied. The results showed an increase in the number of works between 2012 and 2023, and they were especially conducted in Europe and Asia and less in North America, South America, and Oceania. Most studies were developed in terrestrial areas, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature classified them into types II and IV. Most of the works followed the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment classification and were mainly focused on the supply dimension. Regulating and maintenance and cultural ES were the most mapped dimensions in PAs. The most frequent provisioning ES mapped in PAs were Animals reared for nutritional purposes and Cultivated terrestrial plants grown for nutritional purposes. In regulating and maintenance, Maintaining nursery populations and habitats and Regulation of the chemical composition of the atmosphere and oceans were the most analysed. For cultural ES, Characteristics of living systems that enable activities promoting health, recuperation, or enjoyment through active or immersive interactions and Characteristics of living systems that enable aesthetic experiences were the most mapped ES in PAs. Most works followed a quantitative approach, although the number of qualitative studies is high. Finally, most of the works needed to be validated, which may hamper the credibility of mapping ES in PAs. Overall, this systematic review contributed to a global picture of studies distribution, the areas where they are needed, and the most popular dimensions and sections as the methodologies were applied. The unusual situation created by COVID-19 has clearly undermined the general approach toward sustainability. The impacts of COVID-19 questioned the progress on SDGs, threatening decades of development gains and further delaying the urgent transition to a greener world. The origins of emerging diseases correlate with environmental –land use change, human population density, and wildlife diversity. To prevent future pandemics and promote sustainable development, it is necessary to further embed ecosystem services into socioeconomic development. To this direction, it is evident that protected areas could play a crucial role, as their aim is to maintain the benefits provided by natural ecosystems. As the pandemic has devastating effects on fragile economies, further research implications emerge for the implementation of green development paths that favor conservation and sustainable development. AB - In the face of biodiversity loss, it is crucial to broaden the arguments for conservation of protected areas by acknowledging diverse values of nature. We systematically reviewed empirical studies to investigate tourists' values of nature in protected areas over time and across regions. To do so, we explored (1) the main ecological and social characteristics of the case studies; (2) methodological approaches; and (3) value types. Based on the review of 152 articles, we found that economic valuation has received the most scientific attention, while socio-cultural valuation approaches have recently increased. Values were primarily elicited and analyzed quantitatively and in monetary metrics, although valuation methods and frameworks have diversified over the past two decades. However, considering the role of valuation methods and frameworks as value-articulating institutions, we suggest that future research on nature valuation also applies qualitative and non-monetary methods, elicits diverse values, and conducts plural valuation. This methodological approach is implemented into the spatial context of Sardinia, an insular Italian region, and shows that not only the amount of taken up artificialized land, but also other types of land covers, are likely to increase the magnitude of landslide hazard. A set of implications concerning planning policies related to land cover and land cover transitions are discussed in the concluding section, where policy recommendations are identified in order to mitigate the impacts of land cover transitions on landslide hazards. Therefore, the assessment of ecosystems on large scales is a priority action. In Hungary, this work (MAES-HU) took place between 2016 and 2022. Twelve ecosystem services (ES) were mapped and assessed along with several ecosystem condition (EC) indicators. Their integrated spatial analysis aimed to identify patterns of ES multifunctionality, reveal relationships between EC and ES and delineate ES bundles. The results show outstanding multifunctionality of natural ecosystem types compared with the more artificial types, emphasizing the importance of natural areas in order to fulfil human needs. Native forests provide the most varied range of services, which underlines the importance of forest management to consider multiple services. There is a positive correlation between condition and multifunctionality in forests; areas in better condition (in terms of species composition and structure) provide more services at an outstanding level. ES bundles mainly reflect the major ecosystem types, topography and forest condition. Our analysis represents an example of synthesizing national MAES results with a combination of methods. Finding ES hotspots on a national scale and connecting them with an assessment of EC may help in finding optimal strategies to balance conservation targets and competing land uses. In particular, regional and urban planning processes should adequately manage, improve and monitor the effectiveness of green infrastructures as ecological networks which provide ecosystem services and the spatial connectivity of such systems. Building on a methodological approach defined in previous studies, this article aims at identifying ecological corridors through a least-cost path model with reference to the spatial layout of a set of protected areas. Moreover, such a methodological approach is implemented in the context of the Sardinian region to map ecological corridors, which form, together with protected areas, a network representing the spatial framework of regional green infrastructure. Finally, the study discusses the relation between ecological corridors and the spatial taxonomy of the landscape components featured by environmental relevance, identified by the Regional Landscape Plan, through multiple linear regression analysis, in order to assess if, and to what extent, the present regional spatial zoning code can be used as a basis to implement regulations aimed at protecting ecological corridors. This methodological approach is relevant to defining planning policies and measures to strengthen the operational capacity and effectiveness of regional networks of protected areas through the protection and the improvement of the spatial framework of ecological corridors. In the context of different PAs categories, urban planners have the challenge of temporally and spatially understand ecosystem services (ES) supply and demand. To shed light on this issue, we explored ES within two levels of PAs in one of the main cities in a large tropical forest. By analyzing LULC and mapping ES in sustainable use and full protection PAs in Sao Paulo (Brazil), we investigated the impacts on ES supply and demand resulting from 28 years of LULC changes. In the sustainable use area, we identified urban expansion and the increased pressure on urban parks. In contrast, full protection PAs blocked the urbanization resulted from major undertakings and blocked the urban sprawl to parts of the sustainable use area. We found possible trade-offs between water provision (positively affected) and tourism (negatively affected) in response to the loss of pasture and between water provision (negatively affected) and local climate regulation, and tourism (positively affected) associated with the increase in agriculture. Our study reveals that conservation targets for PAs decisions should address trade-offs among ES as a result of LULC changes derived from surrounding projects and associated interventions. The high complexity of urban systems, multidisciplinarity of issues and multiple impacts they face (resulting from overpopulation, pollution, climate change and, more recently, pandemics) pose an increased challenge for the management of urban agglomerations. In this context, terms such as resilience and sustainability or environmental protection are increasingly used in public administrations. In this review, we want to highlight the importance of green urban areas in providing cultural and regulating benefits to society and the role students' play in identifying and raising awareness on the services that natural capital offers to human communities. The reviewed literature emphasizes the multifunctional role of urban natural areas, including biodiversity conservation and provision of benefits essential for human population well-being. Despite the general recognition of the positive role of civic engagement for the development of highly qualified and better adapted human resources, our review revealed the limited civic engagement of universities in assessing and raising awareness on the role of green areas for urban communities. We also noticed an increased interest of universities in growing their impact on society and giving students opportunities for civic engagement. These transformations go beyond technological fixes and require fundamental changes in cognitive, relational, structural and functional aspects of agricultural systems. However, research on agricultural transformations fails to engage deeply with underlying social aspects such as differing perceptions of sustainability, uncertainties and ambiguities, politics of knowledge, power imbalances and deficits in democracy. In this paper, we suggest that conflict is one manifestation of such underlying social aspects. We present an original conceptualization and analytical framework, wherein conflict is recognized as an important motor for redistribution of power and leverage for social learning that-if addressed through a conflict transformation process-could potentially create a step-change in agricultural transformation towards greater sustainability. Our analysis, building on an extensive literature review and empirical case studies from around the world, suggests a novel approach to guide future transdisciplinary research that can support agricultural transformations towards sustainability. Through its contribution to the ecosystem service provision of soils thus have an impact on human well-being. During the last few decades it has become more and more discussed in the scientific discourses, but our knowledge is still limited about it. Soil management has direct impact on the abundance of soil biota, which is often quite negative due to bad cultivation practices. Earthworm and nematode population counts are useful proxies for soil biota quality also for some ecosystem services. Our aim was to compare different farming systems based on the density of these taxons. We selected three different farms on Szentendre Island, Hungary with similar size (1.5-2 hectares) and agroecological features. All of them have horticultural production with diverse crop rotation, the only difference is the farming systems, ie. one intensive (conventional), and two extensive types (organic and permaculture). Earthworms were sampled in May and September 2019, 5 replicates on each site, by hand sorting of 25x25x25 cm soil blocks. Nematodes were sampled the same dates also 5 replicates with a soil sampler. Nematodes were extracted using the Baermann funnel method. Our results show great differences among farms regarding earthworm abundance, permaculture farm had highest density. Nematode abundance was highest at the permaculture site in spring, while lowest in September. We analyse how knowledge on ecosystem services is actually used to inform land and water management in 22 case studies covering different social-ecological systems in European and Latin American countries. None of the case studies reported instrumental use of knowledge in a sense that ecosystem service knowledge would have served as an impartial arbiter between policy options. Yet, in most cases, there was some evidence of conceptual learning as a result of close interaction between researchers, practitioners and stakeholders. We observed several factors that constrained knowledge uptake, including competing interests and political agendas, scientific disputes, professional norms and competencies, and lack of vertical and horizontal integration. Ecosystem knowledge played a small role particularly in those planning and policy-making situations where it challenged established interests and the current distribution of benefits from ecosystems. The factors that facilitated knowledge use included application of transparent participatory methods, social capital, policy champions and clear synergies between ecosystem services and human well-being. The results are aligned with previous studies which have emphasized the importance of building local capacity, ownership and trust for the long-term success of ecosystem service research. Many driving factors threaten the sustainable functioning of soils, thus that of the entire agroecosystem. In this paper the relationship between ecosystem services provided by soils and sustainable functioning of soils are explored, to propose the integration between their related ecological indicators for agroecosystem assessment. A summary of indicators are presented for sustainable agroecosystem management evaluation and a selection method proposed. Relevant sustainability themes, i.e. SAFA, are drawn from the literature with a discussion of their utility in assessing agricultural sustainability regarding soil related ecosystem services.
