Mapping is a critical exercise that allows an understanding of the spatial distribution of the different ES in PAs. This work aims to conduct a systematic literature review on mapping ES in PAs. In order to carry out this systematic review, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses method was applied. The results showed an increase in the number of works between 2012 and 2023, and they were especially conducted in Europe and Asia and less in North America, South America, and Oceania. Most studies were developed in terrestrial areas, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature classified them into types II and IV. Most of the works followed the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment classification and were mainly focused on the supply dimension. Regulating and maintenance and cultural ES were the most mapped dimensions in PAs. The most frequent provisioning ES mapped in PAs were Animals reared for nutritional purposes and Cultivated terrestrial plants grown for nutritional purposes. In regulating and maintenance, Maintaining nursery populations and habitats and Regulation of the chemical composition of the atmosphere and oceans were the most analysed. For cultural ES, Characteristics of living systems that enable activities promoting health, recuperation, or enjoyment through active or immersive interactions and Characteristics of living systems that enable aesthetic experiences were the most mapped ES in PAs. Most works followed a quantitative approach, although the number of qualitative studies is high. Finally, most of the works needed to be validated, which may hamper the credibility of mapping ES in PAs. Overall, this systematic review contributed to a global picture of studies distribution, the areas where they are needed, and the most popular dimensions and sections as the methodologies were applied.}, keywords = {ecosystem services; Mapping; PRISMA; Systematic literature review; Protected areas}, year = {2024}, eissn = {1879-1026} } @article{MTMT:34529894, title = {Emerging gaps in research on agricultural landscapes}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34529894}, author = {Kruse, Alexandra and Athanasiadou, Eleni and Centeri, Csaba and Michelin, Yves and Slámová, Martina and Šmid Hribar, Mateja and Ferrario, Viviana}, doi = {10.5117/JEL2023.1.001.KRUS}, journal = {Journal of European Landscapes}, volume = {4}, unique-id = {34529894}, year = {2024}, eissn = {2452-1051}, pages = {1-35}, orcid-numbers = {Kruse, Alexandra/0000-0002-0230-0467; Centeri, Csaba/0000-0001-6590-4850} } @article{MTMT:34717224, title = {Socioeconomic impacts of small conserved sites on rural communities in Madagascar}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34717224}, author = {Rodríguez-Rodríguez, D. and Knecht, N. and Llopis, J.C. and Heriarivo, R.A. and Rakotoarison, H. and Andriamampionomanjaka, V. and Navarro-Jurado, E. and Randriamamonjy, V.}, doi = {10.1016/j.envdev.2024.100965}, journal-iso = {ENVIRON DEV}, journal = {ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENT}, volume = {49}, unique-id = {34717224}, issn = {2211-4645}, year = {2024}, eissn = {2211-4653}, pages = {100965}, orcid-numbers = {Rodríguez-Rodríguez, D./0000-0001-9662-4210; Knecht, N./0000-0002-4105-3251; Llopis, J.C./0000-0002-6605-6539; Navarro-Jurado, E./0000-0002-5603-1864; Randriamamonjy, V./0000-0002-4919-0795} } @{MTMT:34454426, title = {The Importance of Protected Areas for Socioeconomic Sustainability}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/34454426}, author = {Asteriou, Marios Alkiviadis and Zarotiadis, Grigoris}, booktitle = {Handbook of Research on Socio-Economic Sustainability in the Post-Pandemic Era}, doi = {10.4018/978-1-7998-9760-6.ch016}, unique-id = {34454426}, abstract = {The unprecedented macroeconomic challenges emerging from the coronavirus pandemic has searing impact on the global economy altering the existing status quo. The unusual situation created by COVID-19 has clearly undermined the general approach toward sustainability. The impacts of COVID-19 questioned the progress on SDGs, threatening decades of development gains and further delaying the urgent transition to a greener world. The origins of emerging diseases correlate with environmental –land use change, human population density, and wildlife diversity. To prevent future pandemics and promote sustainable development, it is necessary to further embed ecosystem services into socioeconomic development. This methodological approach is implemented into the spatial context of Sardinia, an insular Italian region, and shows that not only the amount of taken up artificialized land, but also other types of land covers, are likely to increase the magnitude of landslide hazard. Therefore, the assessment of ecosystems on large scales is a priority action. In Hungary, this work (MAES-HU) took place between 2016 and 2022. Twelve ecosystem services (ES) were mapped and assessed along with several ecosystem condition (EC) indicators. Their integrated spatial analysis aimed to identify patterns of ES multifunctionality, reveal relationships between EC and ES and delineate ES bundles. The results show outstanding multifunctionality of natural ecosystem types compared with the more artificial types, emphasizing the importance of natural areas in order to fulfil human needs. Native forests provide the most varied range of services, which underlines the importance of forest management to consider multiple services. There is a positive correlation between condition and multifunctionality in forests; areas in better condition (in terms of species composition and structure) provide more services at an outstanding level. ES bundles mainly reflect the major ecosystem types, topography and forest condition. Our analysis represents an example of synthesizing national MAES results with a combination of methods. In particular, regional and urban planning processes should adequately manage, improve and monitor the effectiveness of green infrastructures as ecological networks which provide ecosystem services and the spatial connectivity of such systems. Building on a methodological approach defined in previous studies, this article aims at identifying ecological corridors through a least-cost path model with reference to the spatial layout of a set of protected areas. Moreover, such a methodological approach is implemented in the context of the Sardinian region to map ecological corridors, which form, together with protected areas, a network representing the spatial framework of regional green infrastructure. Finally, the study discusses the relation between ecological corridors and the spatial taxonomy of the landscape components featured by environmental relevance, identified by the Regional Landscape Plan, through multiple linear regression analysis, in order to assess if, and to what extent, the present regional spatial zoning code can be used as a basis to implement regulations aimed at protecting ecological corridors. By analyzing LULC and mapping ES in sustainable use and full protection PAs in Sao Paulo (Brazil), we investigated the impacts on ES supply and demand resulting from 28 years of LULC changes. In the sustainable use area, we identified urban expansion and the increased pressure on urban parks. In contrast, full protection PAs blocked the urbanization resulted from major undertakings and blocked the urban sprawl to parts of the sustainable use area. The high complexity of urban systems, multidisciplinarity of issues and multiple impacts they face (resulting from overpopulation, pollution, climate change and, more recently, pandemics) pose an increased challenge for the management of urban agglomerations. In this context, terms such as resilience and sustainability or environmental protection are increasingly used in public administrations. In this review, we want to highlight the importance of green urban areas in providing cultural and regulating benefits to society and the role students' play in identifying and raising awareness on the services that natural capital offers to human communities. The reviewed literature emphasizes the multifunctional role of urban natural areas, including biodiversity conservation and provision of benefits essential for human population well-being. Despite the general recognition of the positive role of civic engagement for the development of highly qualified and better adapted human resources, our review revealed the limited civic engagement of universities in assessing and raising awareness on the role of green areas for urban communities. We also noticed an increased interest of universities in growing their impact on society and giving students opportunities for civic engagement.}, keywords = {Students; ecosystem services; Stakeholders; Social factor; urban natural areas}, year = {2021}, pages = {192-202} } @article{MTMT:32148227, title = {Historical social relevance of ecosystem services related to long term land uses in a coastal arid aeolian sedimentary system in Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain)}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32148227}, author = {Marrero-Rodríguez, Néstor and Peña-Alonso, Carolina and García-Romero, Leví and Sánchez-García, María José and Pérez-Chacón Espino, Emma}, doi = {10.1016/j.ocecoaman.2021.105715}, journal-iso = {OCEAN COAST MANAGE}, journal = {OCEAN & COASTAL MANAGEMENT}, volume = {210}, unique-id = {32148227}, issn = {0964-5691}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1873-524X}, orcid-numbers = {Marrero-Rodríguez, Néstor/0000-0002-1173-7855} } @{MTMT:32736346, title = {Conflict and the governance of Iberian silvopastoral systems. These transformations go beyond technological fixes and require fundamental changes in cognitive, relational, structural and functional aspects of agricultural systems. However, research on agricultural transformations fails to engage deeply with underlying social aspects such as differing perceptions of sustainability, uncertainties and ambiguities, politics of knowledge, power imbalances and deficits in democracy. In this paper, we suggest that conflict is one manifestation of such underlying social aspects. We present an original conceptualization and analytical framework, wherein conflict is recognized as an important motor for redistribution of power and leverage for social learning that-if addressed through a conflict transformation process-could potentially create a step-change in agricultural transformation towards greater sustainability. Our analysis, building on an extensive literature review and empirical case studies from around the world, suggests a novel approach to guide future transdisciplinary research that can support agricultural transformations towards sustainability.}, year = {2020}, eissn = {2163-582X}, pages = {255-311} } @article{MTMT:31611123, title = {The integrated socio-perceptual approach: Using ecological mental maps and future imaginaries to understand land use decisions}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/31611123}, author = {Sullivan-Wiley, Kira and Teller, Amy}, doi = {10.1016/j.gloenvcha.2020.102151}, journal-iso = {GLOBAL ENVIRON CHANG}, journal = {GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE-HUMAN AND POLICY DIMENSIONS}, volume = {64}, unique-id = {31611123}, issn = {0959-3780}, year = {2020}, eissn = {1872-9495} } @inproceedings{MTMT:31658875, title = {Relations among soil moisture, soil compaction and earthworm abundance in conventional, organic and permaculture horticulture farms – an ecosystem service approach}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/31658875}, author = {Szilágyi, Alfréd János and Plachi, E and Waltner, István and Grósz, János and Sebők, András and Simon, Barbara}, booktitle = {Water Dynamics Changes in the Soil–Plant–Atmosphere System}, unique-id = {31658875}, year = {2020}, pages = {173-182}, orcid-numbers = {Sebők, András/0000-0001-5710-0609} } @article{MTMT:31403808, title = {Do farmers and conservationists perceive landscape changes differently?}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/31403808}, author = {Ujházy, Noémi and Molnár, Zsolt and Bede-Fazekas, Ákos and Szabó, Mária Ottilia and Biró, Marianna}, doi = {10.5751/ES-11742-250312}, journal-iso = {ECOL SOC}, journal = {ECOLOGY AND SOCIETY}, volume = {25}, unique-id = {31403808}, issn = {1708-3087}, year = {2020}, orcid-numbers = {Ujházy, Noémi/0000-0001-8854-2186; Bede-Fazekas, Ákos/0000-0002-2905-338X} } @article{MTMT:31260118, title = {Berries, greens, and medicinal herbs - Mapping and assessing wild plants as an ecosystem service in Transylvania (Romania)}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/31260118}, author = {Vári, Ágnes and Arany, Ildikó and Kalóczkai, Ágnes and Kelemen, K. and Papp, J. and Czúcz, Bálint}, doi = {10.1186/s13002-020-0360-x}, journal-iso = {J ETHNOBIOL ETHNOMED}, journal = {JOURNAL OF ETHNOBIOLOGY AND ETHNOMEDICINE}, volume = {16}, unique-id = {31260118}, issn = {1746-4269}, year = {2020}, eissn = {1746-4269}, orcid-numbers = {Vári, Ágnes/0000-0001-5285-847X} } @article{MTMT:31162767, title = {Do Protected Areas Improve Ecosystem Services? Through its contribution to the ecosystem service provision of soils thus have an impact on human well-being. During the last few decades it has become more and more discussed in the scientific discourses, but our knowledge is still limited about it. Soil management has direct impact on the abundance of soil biota, which is often quite negative due to bad cultivation practices. Earthworm and nematode population counts are useful proxies for soil biota quality also for some ecosystem services. Our aim was to compare different farming systems based on the density of these taxons. We selected three different farms on Szentendre Island, Hungary with similar size (1.5-2 hectares) and agroecological features. All of them have horticultural production with diverse crop rotation, the only difference is the farming systems, ie. one intensive (conventional), and two extensive types (organic and permaculture). Earthworms were sampled in May and September 2019, 5 replicates on each site, by hand sorting of 25x25x25 cm soil blocks. Nematodes were sampled the same dates also 5 replicates with a soil sampler. Nematodes were extracted using the Baermann funnel method. Our results show great differences among farms regarding earthworm abundance, permaculture farm had highest density. We analyse how knowledge on ecosystem services is actually used to inform land and water management in 22 case studies covering different social-ecological systems in European and Latin American countries. None of the case studies reported instrumental use of knowledge in a sense that ecosystem service knowledge would have served as an impartial arbiter between policy options. Yet, in most cases, there was some evidence of conceptual learning as a result of close interaction between researchers, practitioners and stakeholders. We observed several factors that constrained knowledge uptake, including competing interests and political agendas, scientific disputes, professional norms and competencies, and lack of vertical and horizontal integration. Ecosystem knowledge played a small role particularly in those planning and policy-making situations where it challenged established interests and the current distribution of benefits from ecosystems. The factors that facilitated knowledge use included application of transparent participatory methods, social capital, policy champions and clear synergies between ecosystem services and human well-being. The results are aligned with previous studies which have emphasized the importance of building local capacity, ownership and trust for the long-term success of ecosystem service research.}, year = {2018}, eissn = {2212-0416}, pages = {579-598} } @article{MTMT:30975428, title = {Handling a messy world: Lessons learned when trying to make the ecosystem services concept operational.
