The purpose of this research was to determine the most significant obstacles that prevent SMEs from implementing smart manufacturing, as well as to identify the most important components of such an operationalization and to evaluate whether only large businesses have access to technological opportunities given the financial complexities of such an adoption. The study is premised on the notion that, in the setting of cyber-physical production systems, the gap between massive corporations and SMEs may result in significant disadvantages for the latter, leading to their market exclusion by the former. The research aim was achieved by secondary data analysis, where previously gathered data were assessed and analyzed. The need to investigate this topic originates from the fact that SMEs require more research than large corporations, which are typically the focus of mainstream debates. The findings validated Industry 4.0′s critical role in smart process planning provided by deep learning and virtual simulation algorithms, especially for industrial production. The research also discussed the connection options for SMEs as a means of enhancing business efficiency through machine intelligence and autonomous robotic technologies. The interaction between Industry 4.0 and the economic management of organizations is viewed in this study as a possible source of significant added value. AB - Purpose - The paper focuses on the identification of disparities in the development of the macroeconomic environment across the member states of the European Union and problematic factors impacting the business environment's level.Research methodology - To find the disparities in the development of the EU countries, the TOPSIS method was used. Based on this analysis, the crucial factors influencing the develop-ment of the macroeconomic environment were determined. The discriminant analysis was then used to form a model, which could help assess and examine the relationship between the business environment and significant determinants of development.Findings - Based on the methods applied, the determinants influencing the development of the macroeconomic environment and key factors and aspects affecting the rate of devel-opment of the economic and business environment were identified and the analysis of the economic and business environment was performed through selected statistical techniques.Practical implications - The analysis confirmed that some countries have certain gaps in its assessment of the dynamics of economic development in EU countries in terms of the sus-tainability and competitiveness of small and medium-sized businesses, and that the business climate is not entirely conducive to these businesses. Originality/Value - The additional value of the paper is the formation of the model, which helps identify the countries with appropriate business environment and those where the eco-nomic development is not sufficiently developed which may be useful for enterprises, inves-tors, and creditors. AB - Sustainable development (SD) can indicate the direction of the development of modern organizations' transition and transformation strategies in the energy sector. Currently, in most countries, the main challenge for the energy sector's strategies is to deal with energy security. The implementation of SD induces changes both in strategy and technology. The strategies are based on the technological transition toward renewable energy sources (RES). The aim of this paper is to explore business management literature dedicated to the transformation and transition strategies in the energy sector. The adopted methods are a systematic literature review (SLR) accompanied by a classical literature review (CLR) in Scopus database exploration. A literature review is developed in VOSviewer software and keyword co-occurrences analysis allowed to identify the main changes of direction in energy sector transformation strategies. The literature was explored by the 26 queries which resulted with 11 bibliometric maps. The analysis of the bibliometric maps was a challenge due to the cross-disciplinary strategic directions of development presented in indexed publications in the Scopus database. The identification of the changes in energy sector strategies is important because of its reliance on depleting resources and natural environment degradation. As a result of this paper, there is a visible shift of the trend in explored scientific publication from not only technological-based solutions but also towards managerial and organizational practices to achieve sustainability in the energy sector. This paper, besides the results, presents the theoretical contribution and managerial recommendations for business practices and addresses future research avenues. There are discussed implications of the presented analysis for further research. Design/methodology/approach After setting the theoretical background on why the corporations need to shoulder the responsibility of sustainable development, the authors did a high level literature review to estimate the gap area and based on the findings formulated some research questions on why the SMEs, more specifically those in Asian emerging market, are lagging behind in terms of CS practices. Next, using the "literature survey" as the methodology the authors did a thorough in-depth literature review to answer the above research questions and organised the findings in light of those research questions. Considering the research gap and the crucial role of SMEs in a country's economic progress the authors restricted the literature search on CS in the case of SMEs only. Findings CS is a well-practiced area in big organisations. However, the literature suggests that in the case of SMEs the situation is different. Social and environmental practices are grossly neglected in SMEs more specifically in emerging markets. Existing literature mentions that collaborative mode of operation, government policy and facilitation, supporting organisation culture can positively influence SME's sustainability performance, and hence, improve their financial performance.Originality/value This paper had done a country-wise comparison of sustainable practices in SMEs and based on the recommendations and suggestions of different scholars as found in the detailed literature review, the authors developed few research propositions and also presented a conceptual model. Finally, to address the gap it mentions some future research possibilities to test and validate the proposed model in the context of SMEs in emerging markets of Asia. AB - Purpose This paper aims to investigate corporate social responsibility (CSR) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in transition and developed economies. Design/methodology/approach Building on social capital theory, the creating shared value approach and institutional theory, the authors study why and how six SMEs in the food sector implement CSR. Findings The authors show that CSR adoption by SMEs is motivated by company values and beliefs, relationships with the local community, a desire to abide by rules and regulations and business motives. They also show that SMEs are involved in various CSR-related activities such as respecting their employees, infusing CSR in the supply chain and philanthropy. Originality/value The findings suggest that although there are similarities between the CSR motives and activities of SMEs in developed and transition countries, there are also some differences, which can be explained by differences in institutions and related to the maturity of the CSR construct in each setting. The authors consequently call for a more holistic approach when investigating CSR across countries, in particular when such investigation concerns SMEs. Methodology used by the authors is through preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis.FindingsCorporate sustainability is a well-practiced area in big organisations. However, literature suggests that in case of SMEs, the situation is different. Social and environmental practices are grossly neglected in SMEs, more specifically in emerging markets. Existing literature mentions that collaborative mode of operation, government policy and facilitation and supporting organisation culture can positively influence SME's sustainability performance and hence improve their financial performance.Research limitations/implicationsMost of the papers in corporate sustainability literature are qualitative in nature and there is no empirical evidence of establishing this relationship in SME context. This paper tries to conceptualise the existence of a possible framework relating factors of sustainability and their role in improving business performance of the SMEs. However, the findings are purely literature-based and piloting of the questionnaire is also done on 20 SMEs in a specific geography. This is a very small and also a biased sample. Future research studies based on this paper are expected to verify the proposed relationship with larger data set catering to different industry clusters and countries.Practical implicationsThe proposed model is only directional in nature. With the content analysis, the authors have tried to answer the research questions relating to factors of sustainability and its impact on business performance. To address the research questions in a more generalised way, an empirical research needs to be conducted to establish the research propositions. The proposed model needs to be validated and optimised with further research and data analysis. Once such a model is established, this can be proved beneficial for providing guidance to SMEs to enhance the sustainability of their business operations.Social implicationsThe SME sector has made a significant contribution to the economic development in countries, and this sector has huge potential for growth, and their geographic spread and penetration is much higher than large organisations. Sustainable growth of this industry sector can reasonably be expected to lead to stable and sustainable development of the nation. Moreover, environmental and social best practices adopted by SMEs will also have a positive influence on society and environment in the long run.Originality/valueThis paper had done a geography wise analysis of sustainable practices in SMEs, and based on the recommendations and suggestions of different analyses, the authors developed few research propositions and also presented a conceptual model. Finally, to address the gap, it mentions some future research possibilities to test and validate the proposed model in the context of SMEs in emerging markets of Asia. This stage of the business transfer process is characterized by the transfer of leadership from the former to the new owner-manager and represents a source of disruption for employees. Thereby, the need of legitimacy for the external successor is maximal because it increases the effectiveness of his power (Boussaguet, 2012) and reduces employees' fears (De Freyman, Culliere et Boussaguet, 2018). However, analysis of the research conducted on this issue does not allow to understand how this legitimacy is acquired among employees. The purpose of this paper is therefore to contribute to the knowledge of the means at the disposal of the external successor to build his legitimacy. Based on nine case studies of small business engaged in CSR, our results identify the CSR approach of the external successor as a managerial posture favoring his legitimization among his employees. The managerial practices of the external successor are then more fair and offer him the opportunity to develop a new project around a set of ethical and moral values appreciated and shared by employees. AB - Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play an important and growing role in the economy, but they also contribute to negative environmental effects. It is often argued that local governments (LGs) would be better able than the central government to address these environmental effects. LGs can generate locally specific solutions and mobilize other local stakeholders. This article examines (1) how Thai SMEs respond to complaints about their industrial water pollution and (2) to what extent LGs have been able to address such environmental degradation. Thirty cases of industrial water pollution were investigated, and stakeholders (entrepreneurs, LGs, affected communities and NGOs) were interviewed about their actions and responses. We conclude that none of the stakeholders on their own make a significant contribution to the environmental outcomes. We present two cases detailing how enterprises, LGs and communities interacted with each other over time and how this interaction shaped the environmental outcomes. The responses of polluting entrepreneurs were driven by interaction between various stakeholders. This finding suggests that LGs alone cannot address water pollution, even if they have the authority and capacity. LGs need to interact with other stakeholders to pursue this task. Currently, SMEs are thought to be the backbone of economic growth in many countries, contributing to the creation of job opportunities and acting as suppliers of goods and services for large organizations. Internationally, various studies are related to the importance of SMEs for a country's development and economic stability. SMEs also play an important role in European economies and their form according to some authors is a pillar of business structure. Academics emphasise in many ways Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a mantra for our time, a time which they characterised as "the era of compassionate capitalism" or "the age of sustainability". CSR communication is an important element of the strategic approach to communication, which rests on the idea that enterprises can create a strong identity by implementing a systematic and proactive strategic communication practice within their organisations, establishing the way for "the building and maintaining of favourable reputations and relationships with key stakeholders".
