For studying these phenomena, Se may be the most suitable, since its microscopic structure is simple, being composed with entangled chains consisting of only homopolar bonds. Hence, after briefly reviewing light-induced changes in Se, including the phase change, we explore relationships between photodarkening and photo-crystallization, using a configurational diagram. Roles of athermal and thermal effects are quantitatively discussed. Besides, a model for understanding unique features of the anisotropic deformations is proposed. The study demonstrates the existence of kinked chains with bistable dihedral-angular conformations, which have similar total energies to that in straight helical chains. Electronically, such kinked chains possess wider optical gaps with no gap states, which is less efficient in localized electronic excitation. This would predict that the photodarkening cannot appear in fully stabilized glasses at Kauzmann temperatures, the behavior being similar to that demonstrated for liquid Se lying in thermal equilibrium. The as-prepared film was irradiated with Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm wavelength for different durations. The structural and morphological characterization indicates that the film has nanoparticles of different shapes with sizes varying from 80 to 300 nm and the structure becomes more crystalline on laser irradiation. The refractive index of the film increases, while the band gap decreases on laser irradiation. The dispersion behaviour of refractive index was studied using the WDD model. The decrease in band gap is attributed to the increase of laser-induced defects, which consequently narrows the energy gap. The non-linear optical parameters were found to increase with an increase in laser irradiation time. The increase in these parameters and transformation from the amorphous to the polycrystalline phase make laser-irradiated films suitable for non-linear optical devices and optical recording media. In amorphous selenium (a-Se) both the structure and dynamics of the surface can be altered when exposed to above-bandgap light. Here we investigate the effect of light on the properties of vapor-deposited a-Se glasses at a range of substrate temperatures and deposition rates. We demonstrate that deposition both under white light illumination and in the dark results in thermally and kinetically stable glasses. Compared to glasses deposited in the dark, stable a-Se glasses formed under white light have reduced thermal stability, as measured by lower density change, but show significantly improved kinetic stability, measured as higher onset temperature for transformation. While light induces enhanced mobility that penetrates deep into the surface, resulting in lower density during vapor deposition, it also acts to form more networked structures at the surface, which results in a state that is kinetically more stable with larger optical birefringence. We demonstrate that the structure formed during deposition with light is a state that is not accessible through liquid quenching, aging, or vapor deposition in the dark, indicating the formation of a unique amorphous solid state. As far electron processes are sensitive to the electric fields, the light stimulated changes can be influenced by plasmon fields. We have investigated the effect of the plasmon field on the photo-darkening or bleaching and also on induced thickness changes in thin chalcogenide films, specifically in As 2S3and As2Se3 compositions, which are the most known and frequently used for investigations of photoinduced effects. Thin film structures built of gold nanoparticles (GNP) deposited on the silica glass substrate and covered by an amorphous film were used for investigations. Correlation was observed between the surface plasmon resonance in the selected spectral region of illumination of investigated samples and the characteristics of photo-darkening and bleaching, thickness change, which show on the possibility to increase the efficiency of optical recording in chalcogenide films. In this paper the same work on obliquely deposited thin film is presented. Our model containing reversible (transient) and irreversible (metastable) parts for kinetics fits well the experimental results of both obliquely and flatly deposited a-AsSe thin films. Finally, we make a brief comment on stretched exponential function which could also provide a quite good fit to experimental data. Both kinetics of the volume expansion under continuous irradiation and that of the relaxation after the illumination is switched off are considered. Comparison between theoretical results and experimental data provides a quantitative estimate of the local conversion rate of structural units responsible for the effect into the expanded states. Furthermore, this comparison shows that the conversion rate in a-As2Se3 is several times smaller than that in a-Se. This paper focuses on the fabrication of surface reliefs at submicrometer length scales in a direct, one- step process of recording by light or ion beam on Se layers or Se/AS(2)S(3) nanolayered films due to induced volume expansion. In our computer simulation we observed covalent bond breaking in the network caused by excited electrons, whereas holes contribute to the formation of inter-chain bonds. The interplay between photo-induced bond breaking and inter-chain bond formation leads to either volume expansion or shrinkage. In the non-ideal case, only a part of the processes is reversible and the total expansion includes the reversible and irreversible changes. Finally we investigate the structural properties of flatly and obliquely deposited chalcogenide thin films. Different void sizes can cause different photoinduced volume changes.
