With the help of publications, statistical data, and the presentation of the main research results, the issue of child poverty is discussed, the main emphasis being on the situation of children removed from or leaving their families, especially those living in residential care homes. In Hungary, the number of studies related to the child protection system is limited and little is known about the school career, employment, or family establishment of those with a care background. We have little information about how well the system prepares them for independent life and how to classify their social integration. The paper also discusses the development of and challenges facing Hungarian child protection on a systemic level. In the case of the children who were removed from their own family it is obvious that the professional bodies and the communities take the parental responsibilities, which means that all the governmental and the official agencies in the institutional child-care and the workers of the foster-care network must work on improving the lives of the children in state care. In Hungary it is not known exactly how the needs of the recipient determine the types of service they can receive. We do not have any information relating what principles prevail in the planning and provision of care and services, and additionally what are the effects of the structural transformation of the system starting 2013. In this study, we present the Hungarian child protection system and briefly also the education system, then we show the opinions of the decision-makers, the child protection professionals and the social workers in the public care system who were interviewed for Young People: Pathways to Education in Europe (YIPPEE) international research project - funded from the European Union's Seventh Framework Program. We deal with the young adults' educational career and with their aspirations for the future. We investigate those factors that can possibly determine the further and higher education career of young people with public care background and we have tried to identify possible supporting and inhibiting factors. At that time, they can step out of the child-protection system or have the option of requesting to stay in aftercare provision if they wish to pursue their studies. Aftercare provision is a combination of services that include accommodation, financial support, personal advice, help to find the most suitable form of education, support for studying, assistance to achieve integration into society and conflict management. Most young people choose this option, remain until they are 24 or 25 years of age and become independent roughly at the same age when their peers leave their families to start a life on their own. The article discusses the educational careers of young people with a care background within this context. Children in care are less likely than their counterparts living in birth families to go on with their studies after the compulsory age of completing schooling. Most of them wish to learn some kind of profession, and only a small percentage enter higher education. The system of aftercare provision is a good means to motivate young people in care to study further and to help those who wish to obtain a higher education degree. This study covers three key issues. Firstly, it deals with the issue of how the situation of children living in and leaving from public child care is addressed in the Hungarian and the international strategies and policy papers. Secondly, it attempts to provide insight into both the Hungarian and the international research agenda related to the situation of children and young adults in public child care. In Hungary, there has not been much research that deals with children who were brought up in public child care. Consequently, we do not know much, for instance, about the school career, job progress, or the founding of a family in the case of young adults leaving from public child care. However, many international studies point out that those who were in public care tend to suffer from social discrimination and often fail to cope with their disadvantageous situation. Finally, on the basis of interviews made in Hungary within the framework of the Yippee international research project, it examines the key factors influencing the school performance of young adults in higher education. The aim is to analyze what types of endogenous and exogenous factors influence the educational career of these persons. By that, I hope to explore the policy measures needed to provide holistic, comprehensive support for children and young people in public child care in order to achieve better educational credentials.
