However, their fossils are often very incomplete, challenging their identification, which, coupled to historical reasons, has led to their marginalization in studies of Cretaceous tetrapod assemblages. We here report on the identities of frogs from three upper Campanian-lower Maastrichtian assemblages from Chilean (Dorotea Formation) and Argentinean (Allen and Los Alamitos formations) Patagonia, with focus on humeral morphology. Records from the Dorotea Formation represent the first described Mesozoic frogs from Chile and include the southernmost record of pipids worldwide. In the three assemblages we have identified humeri of the pipid Kuruleufenia and of calyptocephalellid frogs, proving humeral morphology valuable in diagnosing and identifying Cretaceous frogs from Patagonia. These frogs are diagnostic components of the South American Allenian tetrapod assemblage that was widespread across Patagonia near the end of the Cretaceous. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The occurrence of diversified Normapolles including various species of Vancampopollenites, Papillopollis and Pseudoromeinipollenites suggest a late Campanian-?early Maachtrichtian age. The palynological assemblages suggest an azonal vegetation involving peat-mosses, sedges and palms colonizing wetlands with ephemeral or semi-permanent pools and lakes. The abundant and diverse Normapolles reflect the regional presence of woodlands or other open vegetation communities with prominent Fagales. The pollen and spore associations of Chera and the contemporary palaeobotanical data from SW Europe are indicative of the co-existence of numerous, structurally different and taxonomically individualized plant communities. The suggested palaeofloral heterogeneity is compatible with the current palaeogeographical reconstructions of SW Europe and probably enhance the appearance of the highly diverse fauna with insular characteristics of the latest Cretaceous. These specimens, up to 4.9 mm thick, were recovered from palustrine grey marls of the upper Campanian-lower Maastrichtian Sierra Perenchiza Formation, which comprises a wetland paleoenvironment deposit. These eggshell fragments have a characteristic compactituberculate ornamentation, dinosauroid-spherulitic organisation, and exhibit a complex canaliculate respiratory system. The external tuberculate surface of the shell as well as the internal microstructure enable referral to Megaloolithus aff. siruguei, the most common megaloolithid oospecies known from the Iberian Peninsula and southern France. The biostratigraphic range of M. siruguei matches the temporal distribution of titanosaurid dinosaurs across the Iberian Range, tentatively considered to be potential producers. This Pyrenean area is therefore an exceptional place to study the extinction of continental vertebrates across the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary, being one of the few places in Europe that has a relatively continuous record ranging from the upper Campanian to lower Eocene. The Serraduy area, located on the northwest flank of the Tremp syncline, has seen the discovery of abundant vertebrate remains in recent years, highlights being the presence of hadrosaurid dinosaurs and eusuchian crocodylomorphs. Nevertheless, although these deposits have been provisionally assigned a Maastrichtian age, they have not previously been dated with absolute or relative methods. This paper presents a detailed stratigraphic, magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic study for the first time in this area, making it possible to assign most vertebrate sites from the Serraduy area a late Maastrichtian age, specifically within polarity chron C29r. These results confirm that the vertebrate sites from Serraduy are among the most modern of the Upper Cretaceous in Europe, being very close to the K/Pg boundary. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
