AB - In recent years the Late Cretaceous (Santonian) terrestrial vertebrate locality at Iharkut (western Hungary) has yielded well-preserved remains of lizard taxa besides the remains of fishes, amphibians, turtles, crocodiles, pterosaurs and dinosaurs. Previously the polyglyphanodontine lizard Bicuspidon aff. hatzegiensis has been reported from Iharkut. However, recent excavations at this site produced more lacertilian remains including new polyglyphanodontine material, namely a maxilla and two dentaries which suggest the presence of a new genus in the Iharkut fauna. This previously unknown lizard (described here as Distortodon rhomboideus n. g. n. sp.) is distinct from other polyglyphanodontines such as Bicuspidon, Paraglyphanodon, Polyglyphanodon, Dicothodon and Peneteius. It differs from these genera mainly in having the lingual cusp situated more distally compared to the labial one on its bicuspid teeth located in the distal part of the tooth row, thus the crowns having a unique rhomboidal shape in occlusal view. Distortodon rhomboideus further strengthens the dominance of borioteiioid lizards in the Iharkut fauna. The growing presence of borioteiioids in European localities supports previous theories which suggest some paleobiogeographic connections between the western Tethyan archipelago and North America in the Late Cretaceous. One of these is represented by a left mandible fragment and two dentary fragments. The characters observed on these remains support assignment to the family Chamopsiidae (Scincomorpha). Moreover, the remains belong to a new genus and species, Pelsochamops infrequens n. g. n. sp. Pelsochamops is the first known occurrence of chamopsiids outside North America and adds another scincomorphan lizard to the Iharkut fauna. It represents an additional evidence for dispersal routes between North America and Europe. (C) 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved. A mikrogerinces maradványok üledékből való kinyerésére tovább finomítottam FREEMAN (2010) módszerét, melynek, ezáltal megnőtt hatékonysága, környezetkímélő és a terepen is könnyebben használható lett. A Discoglossidae családon belül új genus új faj, a Bakonybatrachus fedori került leírásra. Abstract In this work a detailed study on taxonomy, taphonomy, palaeoecology, palaeobiology and palaeobiography of the lissamphibian fauna from the Late Cretaceous (Santonian) Iharkút locality (Bakony Mts, Hungary) is elaborated. I have improved Freeman’s (2010) method of extraction of microfossils from screen washed deposits. My new technique is more effective, environmentally sound and it is easier to use in the fieldworks. By taxonomical studies the presence of the family Albanerpetontidae (Allocaudata) was demonstrated. In this family two species cf. Albanerpeton A and B were separated. The cf. Albanerpeton B is the largest known albanerpetontid. Anuran remains from the locality represent three suborders of Anura (Archaeo-, Meso- and Neobatrachia). The Bakonybatrachus fedori novum genus et species is assigned to the family Discoglossidae and the Hungarobatrachus szukacsi novum genus et species (family incertae sedis) probably belongs to the Neobatrachia. Based on the morphology and the muscle insertations of the ilia two more variations of the Hungarobatrachus szukacsi (var. A and B) could be distinguished. They were more probably of different of age. There are also indetermined frog remnants from Discoglossidae and Pelobatidae. Study on the locomotory techniques of the iharkutian frogs managed to demonstrate that the pelvic musculature system of Bakonybatrachus is similar to other discoglossids, but its m. iliacus internus (pars externa) was more robust, consequently it was better swimmer and jumper. The pelvic musculature system of Hungarobatrachus is extraordinary altered in tune with the morphology of its ilium. It shows similarity equally with the good jumper ranids and the strong swimmer pipids as well but it differs strong from the pelvic musculature system of the semi-aquatic frogs. Based on theirs anatomical characters and on recent analogies the amphibians from Iharkút may have been linked to different habitats of the formed river system. The composition of the Iharkutian amphibian fauna shows mixed origin with both Laurasian and Gondwanan taxa. The Gondwana related Hungarobatrachus is the earliest appearance of the neobatrachians in Europe. Eleven species of Normapolles-type pollen grains belonging to seven genera and fruit remains of a new taxon, Sphaeracostata barbackae gen. et sp. nov., are described. The new species is very abundant in the material, represented by ca. 1000 specimens. The genus Caryanthus Friis and an unnamed form previously reported from Hat¸eg by Lindfors et al. (2010) are also present. Plants producing Normapolles-type pollen grains diversified during the Late Cretaceous, with a bloom in the Santonian. The palynostratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous terrestrial sediments in the studied region is based on Normapolles-related species. The studied assemblage is assigned to the Oculopollis zaklinskaiae-Tetracolporopollenites (Brecolpites) globosus Zone (or Zone C) indicating a late Santonian age. Comparison of the Iharkút palynoflora with other known Upper Cretaceous palynofloras of Central Europe shows diachronous occurrence of Normapolles taxa at different geographic localities and warrants further investigation. The ecological requirements of the amphibian fauna reflect azonal conditions controlled by the availability of water, which is in agreement with the inferred ecological conditions based on the paleobotanical investigations. The fauna is of entirely non-marine character, further supported by isotope studies, in line with our data showing that the palynological samples contain no marine forms.
