When developing multiple linear regression models, the following explanatory variables were considered: exports, imports, import concentration and diversification indices, the balance of trade, the balance of payments, and different components of the economic freedom index. Therefore, it was shown that a rise in exports and imports has a beneficial impact on enhancing the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) in each of the nations examined for this study. Furthermore, an increase in the value of the import diversification index is shown to have a beneficial effect on the levels of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovenia, as determined by this study. On the other hand, the import concentration index has been shown to benefit foreign direct investment in Poland. Furthermore, it was discovered that the balance of payments was a positive factor in the Hungarian economy. In contrast, the trade balance was shown to be a positive element in Poland and Slovenia. Both indicators have positively impacted foreign direct investment (FDI) flow.}, year = {2023}, eissn = {1911-8074}, orcid-numbers = {Liviu, Popescu/0000-0003-3010-4743; Catalina, Sitnikov/0000-0001-5464-4168} } @article{MTMT:33822472, title = {Is China's rising presence in Hungary since 2012 impacting on Hungary's relations with the EU?}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/33822472}, author = {Wang, Xiwen}, doi = {10.30722/anzjes.vol15.iss1.17365}, journal-iso = {AUSTRAL NEW ZEALAND J EU STUD}, journal = {AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND JOURNAL OF EUROPEAN STUDIES}, volume = {15}, unique-id = {33822472}, issn = {1837-2147}, abstract = {Hungary has been an active participant in China’s 16+1 initiative which is a cooperation scheme launched by Beijing in 2012 to facilitate comprehensive cooperation between China and 16 Central and Eastern European countries. The article argues that Hungary had a facilitated entry into the wormhole of transition because of pre-democratic initiatives to implement competitive fiscal measures—mainly in the years prior to the fall of the Iron Curtain. However, the gradual transition reached an end by 1995 due to debt accumulations that triggered an internal market reformation. The article further suggests that, in the process, the impact of the FDI has been bittersweet during the transition; on the one hand, foreign capital infusions balanced the state budget, corrected the deficit and transferred know-how. On the other hand, the FDI-based transition produced fragmentation and high dependency of the national economy on unstable foreign capital, rendering a component of unsustainability to the Hungarian economy and the risk of entry into a low added-value chain profile.}, year = {2021}, eissn = {2463-8226}, pages = {1-11} } @article{MTMT:32548693, title = {Migration and Foreign Direct Investment in Hungary: a county-based panel data analysis}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/32548693}, author = {Singh, Devesh}, doi = {10.1080/17520843.2021.2012967}, journal-iso = {MACROECON FINANC EME}, journal = {MACROECONOMICS AND FINANCE IN EMERGING MARKET ECONOMIES}, volume = {4}, unique-id = {32548693}, issn = {1752-0843}, year = {2021}, eissn = {1752-0851}, pages = {1-17}, orcid-numbers = {Singh, Devesh/0000-0002-2315-1915} } @mastersthesis{MTMT:31927951, title = {The Europeanisation of National Systems of Innovation. In other words, does FDI still follow a double track, that is, a quantitative increase coupled with structural upgrading? Does FDI help these countries in avoiding the “middle income trap”? The chapter finds that with changes in the world economy, especially the onset of the Great Recession and its aftermath, the CEE countries need to explore new ways to defend or redefine their place in the international division of labour. The chapter uses quantitative evidence, focusing on the past evolution of FDI and FDI policies. Its theoretical underpinning is derived from the locational advantages leg of the eclectic paradigm, and in the case of recent policy changes in Hungary, from the postulates of obsolescing bargain. The chapter analyses past features in detail, as they provide the best available indicators for future performance. This is however not an exercise in extrapolation. In any case, the projection of past behaviour into the future is close to impossible due to the fluctuation of FDI flows. In such a hypothetical extrapolation, it is difficult to justify the continuation of any trend. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, there were researchers who already noted the presence of multinational enterprises (MNEs)and the need for economic theory to explain their activities (for example [Dunning 1977] and [Vernon, 1971]). In Hungary, András Blahó ([1980]) was among the first ones to note their importance in the world economy in general and in the organization of international production in particular. He built his observations in part on the findings of other Hungarian economists observing the MNE phenomenon since the early 1960s (for example Mihály Simai [1962]).
