These materials were supposed to be mixed during transport before being captured in karstified fissures. Evidence that the eolian fissure sediments of Plio-Pleistocene age in the older Triassic-Cretaceous limestones are derived from eolian silt and clay includes compositional and textural matches, especially decreasing grain-size trends observed downwards from the paleo-surface of the former landscape. Various environmental factors could be recognized by the statistical evaluation of grain-size distribution curves of fissure fillings sediments, such as the effects of eolian transport, parent rock type, weathering, and other sediment transport processes. Grain-size distribution curves with a single maximum in the silt size range are typical for the overlying siltstone debris, for the redeposited loess and red paleosol underlying the loess. Red clay fissure fillings yield bimodal grain-size distribution curves with maxima both in the clay and silt fractions. The research reported in this paper identifies for the first time the presence of eolian deposits in karst fissures of the Carpathian Basin and investigates the characteristics and origin. AB - Peritidal carbonates of the Csukma Formation (Csukma Dolomite Member) in the Villany Hills, SW Hungary, were investigated to determine the nature of the dolomitization and recrystallization processes that affected these rocks during their complex tectonic evolution, and to evaluate if clumped isotope data preserved signals from the original dolomitization event or are indicative of the later recrystallization processes. Sedimentary and petrographic features, as well as geochemical characteristics integrated with the tectonic evolution of the area indicate that dolomitization likely occurred penecontemporaneously via geothermal convection of normal-to-slightly modified seawater in a near-surface to shallow burial setting. This was followed by partial recrystallization of the dolomites in an intermediate burial setting with low water-to-rock ratios. Results of this study suggest that the clumped isotope temperatures of dolomites, partially recrystallized via dissolution-re-precipitation, may provide a minimum estimate of the temperature of recrystallization. However, caution has to be taken when interpreting the thermal history and fluid evolution of successions that were affected by significant recrystallization, because the clumped isotope temperatures and the calculated fluid compositions might inaccurately represent the diagenetic conditions. Based on facies trends and bounding surfaces, depositional sequences of several orders can be identified. New biostratigraphic data provide a time frame of the studied succession with placement of the boundaries of the Anisian substages and show that the Aegean (early Anisian) substage lasted about 1.6 Myr. In the corresponding interval in the two studied sections, 80 elementary sequences are counted. Five elementary sequences compose a small-scale sequence. The prominent cyclic pattern of the Opletnya Member can thus be interpreted in terms of Milankovitch cyclicity: elementary sequences represent the precession (20-kyr) cycle and small-scale sequences the short eccentricity (100-kyr) cycle in the Milankovitch frequency band. Medium-scale sequences are defined based on lithology but only in two cases can be attributed to the long eccentricity cycle of 405 kyr. The transgressive-regressive facies trends within the sequences of all scales imply that they were controlled by sea-level changes, and that these were in tune with the climate changes induced by the orbital cycles. However, the complexity of facies and sedimentary structures seen in the Opletnya Member also implies that additional factors such as lateral migration of sediment bodies across the ramp were active. In addition, three major sequence boundaries have been identified in the studied sections, which can be correlated with the boundaries Ol4, An1, and An2 of the Tethyan realm.
