We simulated the cloud of Fe13+ ions by computing ion trajectories in the EBIT for different ion energy distributions used to initialize the trajectories. We then performed a least-squares fit to infer the ion energy distribution that best reproduced the measured ion cloud. These best-fit distributions were typically non-Maxwellian. For electron beam energies of 395-475 eV and electron beam currents of 1-9 mA, we find that the average ion energy is in the range of 10-300 eV. We also find that the average ion energy increases with increasing beam current approximately as < E > approximate to 25I(e) eV, where I-e is the electron beam current in mA. We have also compared our results to Maxwell-Boltzmann-distribution ion clouds. We find that our best-fit non-thermal distributions have an < E > that is less than half that of the T from the best-fit Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions (< E >/q)/T = 0.41 +/- 0.05. These materials will be widely used as plasma facing components for their high heat tolerance and low sputtering yield. Based on an electron beam ion trap, a compact impurity spectra platform is developed to mimic the high-temperature environment of a fusion reactor. The proposed platform can deliver a focused e-beam at energies over 30 keV using a confining magnetic field of similar to 1.0 T generated by two superconducting coils (NbTi). Cooled by a closed-loop cryocooler, the coils can avoid the usage of a complicated cryogenic system involving the handling of liquid helium. For spectroscopic studies of highly charged ions, a spherically curved crystal spectrometer is proposed to measure a wavelength range around 2-4 angstrom covering the typical wavelength range expected to be emitted by metal ions in a fusion plasma. This paper reports the design and development progress of the platform. Published under an exclusive license by AIP Publishing. LA - English DB - MTMT ER - TY - JOUR AU - Dreiling, J. M. In nearly all cases, singly-or few-times-ionized atoms are created in situ within the RF trap. Highly charged ions, on the other hand, are produced more efficiently in dedicated external sources; hence, the isolation of single highly charged species in an RF trap is more involved. In this work, highly charged ions produced by an electron beam ion trap/source are extracted in bunches via an similar to 7 m long beamline, which is tuned to minimize the phase-space volume of the ion bunch. The charge-state-selected ion bunch is then captured in an RF trap constructed from cylindrically symmetric electrodes with pseudohyperbolic surfaces. The RF drive parameter space is surveyed both experimentally and computationally to investigate the dynamics and map out those regions favorable for ion capture. We find that an appreciable number of Ne10+ ions are captured using an RF frequency of 2.4 MHz and an amplitude range of 120 V-220 V, with an efficiency highly dependent on the RF field phase. An experimental capture efficiency of >20% was attained, with at least 500 ions being captured by the RF trap. This is slightly higher (similar to 135%) than that captured by a contiguous, compact Penning trap. However, in the absence of any cooling mechanism, the observed ion-storage lifetime in the RF trap is 69 ms, a factor of similar to 30 shorter than in the Penning trap; potential improvements are discussed. The control over all relevant degrees of freedom in these atoms has enabled relative frequency uncertainties at a level of 10(-18). This accomplishment not only allows for extremely accurate time and frequency measurements, but also to probe our understanding of fundamental physics, such as a possible variation of fundamental constants, a violation of the local Lorentz invariance, and the existence of forces beyond the standard model of physics. In addition, novel clocks are driving the development of sophisticated technical applications. Crucial for applications of clocks in fundamental physics are a high sensitivity to effects beyond the standard model and a small frequency uncertainty of the clock. Highly charged ions offer both. They possess optical transitions which can be extremely narrow and less sensitive to external perturbations compared to current atomic clock species. The large selection of highly charged ions offers narrow transitions that are among the most sensitive ones for the "new physics" effects. Recent experimental advances in trapping and sympathetic cooling of highly charged ions will in the future enable advanced quantum logic techniques for controlling motional and internal degrees of freedom and thus enable high-accuracy optical spectroscopy. Theoretical progress in calculating the properties of selected highly charged ions has allowed the evaluation of systematic shifts and the prediction of the sensitivity to the physics beyond the standard model. New theoretical challenges and opportunities emerge from relativistic, quantum electrodynamics, and nuclear-size contributions that become comparable with interelectronic correlations. This article reviews the current status of the field, addresses specific electronic configurations and systems which show the most promising properties for research, their potential limitations, and the techniques for their study.
