AB - Motivated by recent cold-atom realizations of matter-wave waveguide QED, we study simple fermionic impurity models and discuss fermionic analogs of several paradigmatic phenomena in quantum optics, including formation of nontrivial bound states, (matter-wave) emission dynamics, and collective dissipation. For a single impurity, we highlight interesting ground-state features, focusing in particular on real-space signatures of an emergent length scale associated with an impurity screening cloud. We also present non-Markovian many-body effects in the quench dynamics of single- and multiple-impurity systems, including fractional decay around the Fermi level and multiexcitation population trapping due to bound states in the continuum.

AB - The growing interest in atomic structures of moderately stripped alkali-like ions in the diagnostic study and modeling of astrophysical and laboratory plasma makes an accurate many-body study of atomic properties inevitable. This work presents transition line parameters in the absence or presence of plasma atmosphere for astrophysically important candidates Ar7+, Kr7+, Xe7+, and Rn7+. We employ relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory, a well-known correlation exhaustive method. In the case of a plasma environment, we use the Debye Model. Our calculations agree with experiments available in the literature for ionization potentials, transition strengths of allowed and forbidden selections, and lifetimes of several low-lying states. The unit ratios of length and velocity forms of transition matrix elements are the critical estimation of the accuracy of the transition data presented here, especially for a few presented for the first time in the literature. We do compare our findings with the available recent theoretical results. Our reported data can be helpful to the astronomer in estimating the density of the plasma environment around the astronomical objects or in the discovery of observational spectra corrected by that environment. The present results should be advantageous in the modeling and diagnostics laboratory plasma, whereas the calculated ionization potential depression parameters reveal important characteristics of atomic structure.

AB - Spectral lines of buffer noble gases injected into an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) have recently been used as a reference to aid accurate determination of the wavelengths of optical transitions of highly charged ions (HCIs). Simultaneous observation of emission lines of HCIs along with those of neutral atoms or singly charged ions represents a reliable method for wavelength calibration that suppresses systematic uncertainties. Here, we present visible and infrared emission spectra of buffer Ne and Ar gases in an EBIT and briefly review the buffer gas calibration method. The experimental conditions required for implementing the calibration method are discussed by investigating the dependence of the emission spectra of mixtures of HCIs and noble gases on electron beam's parameters and gas pressure.

AB - In this work, we report a spectroscopy measurement of Ru21+ to Ru24+ ions in the optical region using a low energy electron beam ion trap. Twelve lines were observed. The multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and relativistic configuration interaction methods were used to calculate the atomic level energies and the transition rates. With the assistance of the theoretical results, eleven magnetic dipole lines were identified. The experimental results provide new reference data for further theoretical investigations of the complex ions.

AB - Promising searches for new physics beyond the current standard model (SM) of particle physics are feasible through isotope-shift spectroscopy, which is sensitive to a hypothetical fifth force between the neutrons of the nucleus and the electrons of the shell. Such an interaction would be mediated by a new particle which could in principle be associated with dark matter. In so-called King plots, the mass-scaled frequency shifts of two optical transitions are plotted against each other for a series of isotopes. Subtle deviations from the expected linearity could reveal such a fifth force. Here, we study experimentally and theoretically six transitions in highly charged ions of Ca, an element with five stable isotopes of zero nuclear spin. Some of the transitions are suitable for upcoming high-precision coherent laser spectroscopy and optical clocks. Our results provide a sufficient number of clock transitions for-in combination with those of singly charged Ca+-application of the generalized King plot method. This will allow future high-precision measurements to remove higher-order SM-related nonlinearities and open a door to yet more sensitive searches for unknown forces and particles.

AB - Excited states are different quantum states from their ground states, and spectroscopy methods that can assess excited states are widely used in materials characterization. Understanding the spectra reflecting excited states is thus of great importance for materials science. However, understanding such spectra remains difficult because excited states have usually different atomic or electronic configurations from their corresponding ground states. If excited states could be predicted from ground states, the knowledge of the excited states would be improved. Here, we used an artificial neural network to predict the excited states of the core-electron absorption spectra from their ground states. Consequently, our model correctly learned and predicted the excited states from their ground states, providing several thousand times computational efficiency. Furthermore, it showed excellent transferability to other materials. Also, we found two physical insights about excited states: core-hole effects of amorphous silicon oxides are stronger than those of crystalline silicon oxides, and the excited-ground states relationships of some metal oxides are similar to those of the silicon oxides, which could not be obtained by conventional spectral simulation nor found until using machine leaning.

AB - State-of-the-art optical clocks(1) achieve precisions of 10(-18) or better using ensembles of atoms in optical lattices(2,3) or individual ions in radio-frequency traps(4,5). Promising candidates for use in atomic clocks are highly charged ions(6) (HCIs) and nuclear transitions(7), which are largely insensitive to external perturbations and reach wavelengths beyond the optical range(8) that are accessible to frequency combs(9). However, insufficiently accurate atomic structure calculations hinder the identification of suitable transitions in HCIs. Here we report the observation of a long-lived metastable electronic state in an HCI by measuring the mass difference between the ground and excited states in rhenium, providing a non-destructive, direct determination of an electronic excitation energy. The result is in agreement with advanced calculations. We use the high-precision Penning trap mass spectrometer PENTATRAP to measure the cyclotron frequency ratio of the ground state to the metastable state of the ion with a precision of 10(-11)-an improvement by a factor of ten compared with previous measurements(10,11). With a lifetime of about 130 days, the potential soft-X-ray frequency reference at 4.96 x 10(16) hertz (corresponding to a transition energy of 202 electronvolts) has a linewidth of only 5 x 10(-8) hertz and one of the highest electronic quality factors (10(24)) measured experimentally so far. The low uncertainty of our method will enable searches for further soft-X-ray clock transitions(8,12) in HCIs, which are required for precision studies of fundamental physics(6).Penning trap mass spectrometry is used to measure the electronic transition energy from a long-lived metastable state to the ground state in highly charged rhenium ions with a precision of 10(-11).

AB - A low-energy, compact, and superconducting electron beam ion trap (the Shanghai-Wuhan EBIT or SW-EBIT) for extraction of highly charged ions is presented. The magnetic field in the central drift tube of the SW-EBIT is approximately 0.21 T produced by a pair of high-temperature superconducting coils. The electron-beam energy of the SW-EBIT is in the range of 30-4000 eV, and the maximum electron-beam current is up to 9 mA. Acting as a source of highly charged ions, the ion-beam optics for extraction is integrated, including an ion extractor and an einzel lens. A Wien filter is then used to measure the charge-state distribution of the extracted ions. In this work, the tungsten ions below the charge state of 15 have been produced, extracted, and analyzed. The charge-state distributions and spectra in the range of 530-580 nm of tungsten ions have been measured simultaneously with the electron-beam energy of 279 eV and 300 eV, which preliminarily indicates that the 549.9 nm line comes from W14+.

AB - Recent developments in frequency metrology and optical clocks have been based on electronic transitions in atoms and singly charged ions as references. The control over all relevant degrees of freedom in these atoms has enabled relative frequency uncertainties at a level of 10(-18). This accomplishment not only allows for extremely accurate time and frequency measurements, but also to probe our understanding of fundamental physics, such as a possible variation of fundamental constants, a violation of the local Lorentz invariance, and the existence of forces beyond the standard model of physics. In addition, novel clocks are driving the development of sophisticated technical applications. Crucial for applications of clocks in fundamental physics are a high sensitivity to effects beyond the standard model and a small frequency uncertainty of the clock. Highly charged ions offer both. They possess optical transitions which can be extremely narrow and less sensitive to external perturbations compared to current atomic clock species. The large selection of highly charged ions offers narrow transitions that are among the most sensitive ones for the "new physics" effects. Recent experimental advances in trapping and sympathetic cooling of highly charged ions will in the future enable advanced quantum logic techniques for controlling motional and internal degrees of freedom and thus enable high-accuracy optical spectroscopy. Theoretical progress in calculating the properties of selected highly charged ions has allowed the evaluation of systematic shifts and the prediction of the sensitivity to the physics beyond the standard model. New theoretical challenges and opportunities emerge from relativistic, quantum electrodynamics, and nuclear-size contributions that become comparable with interelectronic correlations. This article reviews the current status of the field, addresses specific electronic configurations and systems which show the most promising properties for research, their potential limitations, and the techniques for their study.
