The 4D-ED data are collected by recording a 2D diffraction pattern at each position in the 2D area of the TEM lamella scanned by the electron beam of STEM. Data processing is completed with a new computer program (available free of charge) that runs under the Windows operating system. Previously published similar methods are either commercial or need special hardware (electron holography) or are based on HRTEM, which involves limitations with respect to the size of the field of view. All these limitations are overcome by our approach. The presence of defects results in small local changes in orientation that change the subset of experimentally available diffraction spots in the individual patterns. Our method is based on a new principle, namely fitting a lattice to (a subset of) measured diffraction spots to improve the precision of the measurement. Although a spot to be measured may be missing in some of the patterns even the missing spot can be precisely measured by the lattice determined from the available spots. Application is exemplified by heavily boron-doped silicon with intended usage as a low-temperature superconductor in qubits. The samples were synthesized with different percentages of silver nitrate content by co-precipitation method. The cerium nitrate hexahydrate was a precursor of Ce reagent, polyvinylpyrrolidone as dispersant agent, and ammonium hydroxide as a precipitating agent. The obtained particles were annealed at 400 degrees C and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and N-2 physisorption. The particles show high crystallinity, whose size decreases slightly by the effect of Ag precursor incorporation. These particle morphologies studied by SEM and TEM revealed the spherical shape of CeO2 NPs. Furthermore, the Ag particles were observed with a size of around 30 nm. Selected area electron diffraction patterns confirm the cubic structure of CeO2, also the cubic structure of Ag particles. Besides, it was determined that Ag incorporation has no significant influence on the textural properties of NPs. In addition, the antibacterial activity was evaluated against gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms. The quantitative results showed that the antimicrobial activity increased depending on the Ag amount incorporated, reaching up to 99.999% of the growing reduction rate. Two orientation relationships related by a rotation: [120](delta)parallel to[111]. with (212)(delta)parallel to(110)(alpha) and [120](delta)parallel to[111](alpha) with (003)(delta)parallel to(110)(alpha), are established and periodic arrays of misfit dislocation doublets are identified at the strained interface in (110)(alpha) for both ORs. Further eighteen energetically feasible ORs in Y4Zr3O12/bcc system are deduced by combining stereographic projections, which include the two predominant ORs in this study and other ORs in literature. The orientation relationship which generates interface with a minimum number of dislocation doublets is the most frequent. The precipitate size dependence of ORs and the role of predominant OR in strengthening mechanism are discussed. The obtained specimens are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence, optical transmission spectroscopy, and current-voltage measurements. Both types of Ga(2)O(3)layers are of reasonably high crystal qualities; their physical properties, however, are very different. Under the same conditions, the growth on plain substrates results in a continuous alpha-Ga(2)O(3)layer, whereas the growth on PSS produces a regular array of alpha-Ga(2)O(3)columns on top of the sapphire cones with the space between them filled with epsilon-Ga2O3. Ga(2)O(3)films grown on plain sapphire are insulating; in contrast, Ga(2)O(3)films grown on PSS are conducting. It is found that the conductivity of Ga(2)O(3)on PSS follows the Arrhenius law with the activation energy of 0.33 eV. New luminescent bands for alpha- and epsilon-phases are found. Spectral components of the defect-related luminescence for alpha- and epsilon- phases are identified. The synthesised nanostructured powders were thoroughly characterised by a wide array of analytical techniques from the morphological (Scanning Electron Microscopy -SEM-, Transmission Electron Microscopy -TEM-, Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy -EDXS-), structural (Powder X-ray Diffraction -PXRD-, Selected Area Electron Diffraction -SAED-), compositional (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy -XPS-) and physical (thermal stability) point of view. As far as functional applications are concerned, the powders were tested as gas sensor materials for H2S detection. Thereby these ZnO particles showed unexpected gas dosimeter behaviour at 150 degrees C. Based on these observations and on a comparison with literature a new model for the interaction of ZnO nanostructures with H2S is proposed. LA - English DB - MTMT ER - TY - JOUR AU - Hoque, M.M. The absence of adequate red-coloured raw materials influenced the development of technological activities aimed at modifying the original physiochemical properties of yellow ochre. The heat treatment of goethite to obtain hematite was investigated in the western sector of the Lessini Mountains in north-east Italy, where red ochre was found in the (Proto)Aurignacian levels at Fumane cave and in the Late Epigravettian sequence at Tagliente rockshelter. The combination of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) proved that heat treatment was a common practice in the studied archaeological sites due to the scarce availability of suitable hematite-based material in the region. The novelty of the method reported here is that it successful processes such weak patterns. It is based on separating the angular dependence of the positions of the maxima on the azimuthal angle in the measured two-dimensional pattern for a manually preselected peak. Both pattern center and elliptical distortion are simultaneously refined from this angular dependence. Both steps are based on nonlinear least square fitting, using the Levenberg–Marquardt method. It can be successfully applied to any amorphous patterns provided they were recorded with experimental conditions that facilitate dividing them into sectors with acceptable statistics. Patterns with the center shifted to the camera corner (recording a quadrant of a ring) can also be reliably evaluated, keeping precalibrated values of the elliptical distortion fixed during the fit. Finally, the limited number of counts in any pattern is overcome by cumulating many patterns (from equivalent areas) into a single pattern. Eliminating false effects is facilitated by masking out unwanted parts of any recorded pattern from processing. Ion mass spectrometry showed that energies of abundant plasma cations are governed by the inert gas and the N2-to-inert gas flow ratios. The population of ion species depends on the sputter mode; HiPIMS yields approximately ten times higher flux ratios of ions originating from the target to process gas ions than DCMS. Exceptional are discharges in Ne with N2-to-Ne flow ratios < 20%. Here, cation energies and the amount of target ions are highest without influence on the sputter mode. CNx thin films were deposited in 14% N2/inert gas mixtures at substrate temperatures of 110°C and 430°C. The film properties show a correlation to the substrate temperature, the applied inert gas and sputter mode. The mechanical performance of the films is mainly governed by their morphology and composition, but not by their microstructure. Amorphous and fullerene-like CN0.14 films exhibiting a hardness of ~ 15 GPa and an elastic recovery of ~ 90% were deposited at 110°C in reactive Kr atmosphere by DCMS and HiPIMS. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. The films were deposited at 400 degrees C in an all metal UHV device by unbalanced magnetron sputtering at the same Ar and nitrogen flow rates, but the oxygen flow rate was changed in the experiments, incorporating oxygen in the range of 4 and 20 at.%. The structure of the films was investigated by XRD, Auger electron (AES) and X-ray photon electron (XPS) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results discovered the crystal face anisotropy in the incorporation-segregation of oxygen leading to the change of the < 111 > texture to < 002 >. The structure analysis revealed that the < 002 > texture is developing also by competitive growth of crystals, which is the result of the limitation of the growth of the < 111 > oriented crystals by the TiO2 layer developing on their growth surface by the segregated oxygen species. The oxygen incorporating in the crystal lattice on the 002 crystal faces of the < 002 > oriented crystals is segregated by surface spinodal decomposition, developing nm sized 3D TiO2 inclusion both in the bulk of the columns and the column boundaries. It has been shown that the growth competition is related to the different way of segregation-incorporation of the oxygen species on the {001} and {111} crystal faces. Oxygen is preferentially segregated on the OM crystal face and is growing in the form of a 2D TiO2 surface layer on the growth surface, limiting the growth of < 111 > oriented crystals. On the {001} faces, however, the major part of condensing oxygen species is dissolved into the crystal lattice and only a part forms TiO2 aggregates. Thin solid films were synthesized in an industrial deposition chamber from a graphite target. The peak target current during HiPIMS processing was found to decrease with increasing inert gas mass. Time averaged and time resolved ion mass spectroscopy showed that the addition of nitrogen, as reactive gas, resulted in less energetic ion species for processes employing Ne, whereas the opposite was noticed when Ar or Kr were employed as inert gas. Processes in nonreactive ambient showed generally lower total ion fluxes for the three different inert gases. As soon as N2 was introduced into the process, the deposition rates for Ne and Ar-containing processes increased significantly. The reactive Kr-process, in contrast, showed slightly lower deposition rates than the nonreactive. The resulting thin films were characterized regarding their bonding and microstructure by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Reactively deposited CNx thin films in Ar and Kr ambient exhibited an ordering toward a fullerene-like structure, whereas carbon and CNx films deposited in Ne atmosphere were found to be amorphous. This is attributed to an elevated amount of highly energetic particles observed during ion mass spectrometry and indicated by high peak target currents in Ne-containing processes. These results are discussed with respect to the current understanding of the structural evolution of a-C and CNx thin films. © 2013 American Vacuum Society. Amorphous carbon fluoride (CFx) films were synthesized at deposition pressure and substrate temperature of 400 mPa and 110 C, respectively. The CFx film composition was controlled in the range of 0.15 < x < 0.35 by varying the partial pressure of the F-containing gases from 0 mPa to 110 mPa. The reactive plasma was studied employing time averaged positive ion mass spectrometry and the resulting thin films were characterized regarding their composition, chemical bonding and microstructure as well as mechanical properties by elastic recoil detection analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nanoindentation, and water droplet contact angle measurements, respectively. The experimental results were compared to results obtained by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. The modeling of the most abundant precursor fragment from the dissociation of CF4 and C4F8 provided their relative stability, abundance, and reactivity, thus permitting to evaluate the role of each precursor during film growth. Positive ion mass spectrometry of both fluorine plasmas shows an abundance of CF+, C+, CF2 +, and CF3 + (in this order) as corroborated by first-principles calculations. Only CF3 + exceeded the Ar+ signal in a CF4 plasma. Two deposition regimes are found depending on the partial pressure of the fluorine-containing reactive gas, where films with fluorine contents below 24 at.% exhibit a graphitic nature, whereas a polymeric structure applies to films with fluorine contents exceeding 27 at.%. Moreover, abundant precursors in the plasma are correlated to the mechanical response of the different CFx thin films. The decreasing hardness with increasing fluorine content can be attributed to the abundance of CF3 + precursor species, weakening the carbon matrix. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Volume fractions and degree of fiber texture are determined for the nanocrystalline components. The effect of the amorphous component is minimized by empirical background interpolation. First, the two-dimensional SAED pattern is converted into a one-dimensional distribution similar to X-ray diffraction. Volume fractions of the nanocrystalline components are determined by fitting the spectral components, calculated for the previously identified phases with a priori known structures. These Markers are calculated not only for kinematic conditions, but the Blackwell correction is also applied to take into account dynamic effects for medium thicknesses. Peak shapes and experimental parameters (camera length, etc.) are refined during the fitting iterations. Parameter space is explored with the help of the Downhill-SIMPLEX. The method is implemented in a computer program that runs under the Windows operating system. Part I presented the principles, while part II elaborated current implementation. The present part III demonstrates the usage and efficiency of the computer program by numerous examples. The suggested experimental protocol should be of benefit in experiments aimed at phase analysis using electron diffraction methods. The fluorine content of the films was controlled by varying the CF(4) partial pressure from 0 mPa to 110 mPa at a constant deposition pressure of 400 mPa and a substrate temperature of 110 degrees C. The films were characterized regarding their composition, chemical bonding and microstructure as well as mechanical properties by applying elastic recoil detection analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nanoindentation. First-principles calculations were carried out to predict and explain F-containing carbon thin film synthesis and properties. By geometry optimizations and cohesive energy calculations the relative stability of precursor species including C(2), F(2) and radicals, resulting from dissociation of CF4, were established. Furthermore, structural defects, arising from the incorporation of F atoms in a graphene-like network, were evaluated. All as-deposited CF(x) films are amorphous. Results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy indicate a graphitic nature of CF(x) films with x <= 0.23 and a polymeric structure for films with x >= 0.26. Nanoindentation reveals hardnesses between similar to 1 GPa and similar to 16 GPa and an elastic recovery of up to 98%. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Nowadays, TEM laboratories encounter many thin samples with grain size in the 1-30 nm range, not too far from the kinematic ED conditions. This article describes a method that performs (semi) quantitative phase analysis for nanocrystalline samples from selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns. Fractions of the different nanocrystalline components are determined from rotationally symmetric ring patters. Both randomly oriented nanopowders and textured nanopowders, observed from the direction of the texture axis produce such SAED patterns. The textured fraction is determined as a separate component by Fitting the spectral components, calculated for the previously identified phases with a priori known structures, to the measured distribution. The Blackman correction is applied to the set of kinematic diffraction lines to take into account dynamic effects for medium grain size. Parameters of the peak shapes and the other experimental parameters are refined by exploring the parameter space with the help of the Downhill-SIMPLEX. Part I presents the principles, while future publication of Parts II and III will elaborate on current implementation and will demonstrate its usage by examples, respectively.
