Indium-tin oxide (ITO) is the most used and studied TCO, but it lacks thermal and chemical stability and indium is a scarce and toxic element. Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) emerged as the most promising alternative to ITO, presenting better thermal and chemical stability. Among the numerous techniques for depositing FTO thin films over glass substrates, spray pyrolysis is the simplest and most economical, with great potential for upscaling. However, the relative importance of the experimental variables that influence the optoelectronic properties remains barely addressed. Following this premise, the present work aimed at optimizing the deposition of FTO films on soda lime glass (SLG) substrates by spray pyrolysis following a Design of Experiments (DoE) methodology. The optoelectronic properties of FTO-SLG substrates was evaluated based on their optical transmittance and sheet resistance, both combined in a figure of merit (FoM) tailored for PV applications. It was concluded that the volume of sprayed solution and the fluorine/ tin ratio in the precursor have the greatest influence in the FoM, being the optimal deposition conditions a sprayed volume of 60.8 ml and a [F]/[Sn] ratio of 0.45. FTO-SLG substrates prepared with these conditions achieved a FoM of 0.680 Omega(-1/10)(square), corresponding to a sheet resistance of 3.40 Omega(square) and a transmittance equivalent to 77% of the maximum current generated in the considered spectrum. The improved FoM was validated in dyesensitized and perovskite solar cells (DSSCs and PSCs, respectively), assembled with in-house optimized and commercial substrates. The efficiency of DSSCs was improved by 8.9% (relative), whereas PSCs achieved a lightto-power efficiency of 17% (absolute), corresponding to an improvement of 4.7% (relative). In this work, three-dimensional CuxS cathodes were synthesized via introducing commercially available copper foam into the solution of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and sulfur powder. The synthesis procedures were straightforward and ultrafast and did not require additional reagents, high temperature, or long processing time and can be considered as a facile one-step method. Copper sulfide materials with different stoichiometry (x= 1.8, 1.96) were obtained by changing the temperature and the residence time of the copper foam in the DMSO solution. The effects of the temperature and time on phase and morphology of CuxS were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Electrochemical tests resulted in a stable cyclability of Cu-1.S-8 cathode with 100% Coulombic efficiency and capacity of approximately 250 mAh g(-1). Compound 1 releases first but very slowly some of the included ammonia till 170 A degrees C, then simultaneously ammonia (NH3) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) from 175 to 225 A degrees C, whilst the evolution of SO2 from thiosulfate ligands continues in several overlapping stages until 410 A degrees C, and is escorted by explicit exothermic heat effects at around 237, 260, 358 and 410 A degrees C. The former two exothermic DTA-peaks correspond to the simultaneous degradation and air oxidation processes of excess thiosulfate anions not reacted by formation of copper sulfides (both digenite, Cu1.8S and covellite, CuS, checked by XRD) and sodium sulfate, while the last two exothermic peaks are accompanied also by considerable mass gains, as the result of two-step oxidation of copper sulfides into various oxosulfates. The mass increase continues further on until 580 A degrees C, when the sample mass begins to decrease slowly, as a continuous decomposition of the intermediate copper oxosulfates, indicated also by re-evolution of SO2. At 1,000 A degrees C, a residual mass value of 64.3% represents a stoichiometric formation of (CuO)-O-II and anhydrous Na2SO4. In both inert atmospheres and air between 182 and 240 degrees C the main gaseous products of thiourea are ammonia (NH3) and carbon disulfide (CS2), whilst in flowing air sulphur dioxide (SO2) and carbonyl sulphide (COS) as gas phase oxidation products of CS2, and in addition hydrogen cyanide (HCN) also occur, which are detected by both FTIR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric EGA methods. Some evolution of isothiocyanic acid (HNCS) and cyanamide (NH2CN) vapours have also observed mainly by EGA-FTIR, and largely depending on the experimental conditions. HNCS is hardly identified by mass spectrometry. Any evolution of H2S has not been detected at any stage of thiourea degradation by either of the two methods. The exothermic heat effect of gas phase oxidation process of CS2 partially compensates the endothermicity of the corresponding degradation step producing CS2.
