Here, we present numerical and experimental evidence of the existence of reaction-diffusion waves in the ferroin catalyzed minimal bromate oscillator. The wave dynamics depend not only on the characteristic chemical timescales but also on those of the diffusive matter exchange which occurs between the reaction-diffusion medium and its environment. We show that the extended reactivity of the ferroin catalyst towards the oxybromine species plays an essential role in the observed phenomena. For the cerium catalyzed minimal bromate oscillator the simulations support only the formation of spatial bistability. © 2018 the Owner Societies. With increasing concentration of catalyst and at [H2SO4] less than or equal to 1 mol/dm(3) these systems show the following bifurcation sequences: uncatalyzed oscillations --> clock reaction (with excitability) --> catalyzed oscillations, while at [H2SO4] greater than or equal to 1.5 mol/dm(3) the sequence is uncatalyzed oscillations --> catalyzed oscillations. The model represents an extended version of the mechanism developed to explain the oscillations in the ferroin-free BrO3--CHD system. The kinetics and rate constants for some additional reactions such as ones between ferriin and CHD, BrCHD (2-bromo-1,4-cyclohexanedione) and H(2)Q (1,4-hydroquinone) and between ferroin and bromate were determined and incorporated in the mechanism of the BrO3--CHD reaction. The model proposed here simulates satisfactorily the behavior of the BrO3--CHD ferroin oscillator at increasing concentration of ferroin and at the condition of [ferroin] = 0 mol dm(-3). With low loading of the catalyst on the membrane, oxidation waves can be initiated from the resting steady state and in the recovering tail of a wave. With high loading, waves can only be initiated in the ‘vulnerable’ region behind an existing wavefront. The mechanism of this initiation is discussed in terms of the photoreduction of the metal-ligand catalyst and expressed in terms of a modified Oregonator model. These new observations are in contrast to the inhibitory effect of visible light in the light-sensitive Ru-catalysed BZ system.
