Several examples indicate that the potential natural vegetation is also suitable for this purpose although the flora- and vegetation-based boundaries do not necessarily overlap. We define a vegetation region as an area where the physical geographic features are rather uniform, and which consists of landscapes with floristically/structurally similar vegetation and/or their repetitive mosaics. In this paper, we delimited the boundaries of the Pannonian region based on the distribution of characteristic plant communities. The line runs most often on the border between Quercus cerris-Quercus petraea and Carpinus betulus/Fagus sylvatica dominated landscapes. We provided descriptions of the potential vegetation on both sides of the boundary. The region has an area of 167,012 km2 . The region is either in direct contact with the neighboring regions (e.g., Western Carpathians), or is separated from them by transitional areas (towards the Eastern Alps), and character-poor areas with non-Pannonian, non-Alpine, non-Dinaric vegetation (in the southwest to the Western Balkan). Often, the boundary does not coincide with the boundary of the Pannonicum floristic province. We found that vegetation region boundaries can help reevaluate long-established floristic region boundaries. The boundary of the 'floristic Pannonian region' also requires revision based on integrated distribution databases and statistical analyses. We argue that the method applied here is simple, repeatable and falsifiable. Our map provides an opportunity to the European Union to use a scientifically more sound biogeographical circumscription of the Pannonian region in her Natura 2000 and other programs. © Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.}, keywords = {FLORA; Quercus petraea; Quercus cerris; Carpinus; Vegetation map; Zonality; Vegetation geography; Quercetum petraeae-cerridis; Potential natural vegetation; Pannonian vegetation types}, year = {2016}, eissn = {1588-2756}, pages = {114-124}, orcid-numbers = {Király, Botond Gergely/0000-0002-8439-2616} } @article{MTMT:2933723, title = {Relationships between wild bees, hoverflies and pollination success in apple orchards with different landscape contexts}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2933723}, author = {Földesi, Rita and Kovács-Hostyánszki, Anikó and Kőrösi, Ádám and Somay, László and Elek, Zoltán and Markó, Viktor and Sárospataki, Miklós György and Bakos, Réka and Varga, Ákos and Nyisztor, Katinka and Báldi, András}, doi = {10.1111/afe.12135}, journal-iso = {AGR FOREST ENTOMOL}, journal = {AGRICULTURAL AND FOREST ENTOMOLOGY}, volume = {18}, unique-id = {2933723}, issn = {1461-9555}, year = {2016}, eissn = {1461-9563}, pages = {68-75}, orcid-numbers = {Kőrösi, Ádám/0000-0003-1528-1872; Báldi, András/0000-0001-6063-3721} } @article{MTMT:3028307, title = {Towards understanding and resolving the conflict related to the Eastern Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca) conservation with participatory management planning}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3028307}, author = {Tormáné Kovács, Eszter and Fabók, Veronika and Kalóczkai, Ágnes and Peter Hansen, Hans}, doi = {10.1016/j.landusepol.2016.02.011}, journal-iso = {LAND USE POLICY}, journal = {LAND USE POLICY}, volume = {54}, unique-id = {3028307}, issn = {0264-8377}, year = {2016}, eissn = {1873-5754}, pages = {158-168}, orcid-numbers = {Tormáné Kovács, Eszter/0000-0001-8509-6432} } @article{MTMT:3076163, title = {Conservation of pollinators in traditional agricultural landscapes – New challenges in Transylvania (Romania) posed by EU accession and recommendations for future research}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3076163}, author = {Kovács-Hostyánszki, Anikó and Földesi, Rita and Mózes, E and Szirák, A and Fischer, J and Hanspach, J and Báldi, András}, doi = {10.1371/journal.pone.0151650}, journal-iso = {PLOS ONE}, journal = {PLOS ONE}, volume = {11}, unique-id = {3076163}, issn = {1932-6203}, abstract = {Farmland biodiversity is strongly declining in most of Western Europe, but still survives in traditional low intensity agricultural landscapes in Central and Eastern Europe. Accession to the EU however intensifies agriculture, which leads to the vanishing of traditional farming. Our aim was to describe the pollinator assemblages of the last remnants of these landscapes, thus set the baseline of sustainable farming for pollination, and to highlight potential measures of conservation. In these traditional farmlands in the Transylvanian Basin, Romania (EU accession in 2007), we studied the major pollinator groups-wild bees, hoverflies and butterflies. Landscape scale effects of semi-natural habitats, land cover diversity, the effects of heterogeneity and woody vegetation cover and on-site flower resources were tested on pollinator communities in traditionally managed arable fields and grasslands. Our results showed: (i) semi-natural habitats at the landscape scale have a positive effect on most pollinators, especially in the case of low heterogeneity of the direct vicinity of the studied sites; (ii) both arable fields and grasslands hold abundant flower resources, thus both land use types are important in sustaining pollinator communities; (iii) thus, pollinator conservation can rely even on arable fields under traditional management regime. This has an indirect message that the tiny flower margins around large intensive fields in west Europe can be insufficient conservation measures to restore pollinator communities at the landscape scale, as this is still far the baseline of necessary flower resources. This hypothesis needs further study, which includes more traditional landscapes providing baseline, and exploration of other factors behind the lower than baseline level biodiversity values of fields especially in protected areas, often result in trade-offs between ecosystem services (ESs). Exploring trade-offs between ESs and linking them with stakeholders can help reveal the potential losers and winners of land use changes. In this paper, we demonstrate that ES trade-offs do not always go hand in hand with conflicts. The perception of local stakeholders about trade-offs between ESs at three protected sites in the Great Hungarian Plain were assessed through qualitative methods. In all areas significant conservation measures had been introduced since the 1990s resulting in land use changes. Locals (farmers at each site and inhabitants at one site) were the main ‘losers’ of the land use changes and related ES trade-offs, while there were many winners at different spatial and temporal scales. Conflicts appeared only between locals and the national park directorates, and not between locals and other beneficiaries of the new ESs. Due to scale mismatch, locals might not be in direct contact with other stakeholders, and vice versa, and therefore there is no interface between them for confrontation and negotiation. Integrating scale into the analysis also helps in advising policy instruments to minimise local-level conflicts.}, keywords = {SCALE; ecosystem services; Qualitative Research; TRADE-OFFS; Protected areas; Land use conflicts}, year = {2015}, eissn = {2212-0416}, pages = {117-127}, orcid-numbers = {Tormáné Kovács, Eszter/0000-0001-8509-6432; Gébert, Judit/0000-0002-0026-1847; Balázs, Bálint/0000-0001-6937-499X; Kovács Krasznai, Eszter/0000-0003-3516-7786} } @article{MTMT:2950976, title = {Bridging the research-practice gap: conservation research priorities in a Central and Eastern European country}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2950976}, author = {Mihók, Barbara and Tormáné Kovács, Eszter and Balázs, Bálint and Pataki, György and Ambrus, András and Bartha, Dénes and Czirák, Zoltán and Csányi, Sándor and Csépányi, Péter Albert and Csőszi, Mónika and Dudás, György Zoltán and Egri, Csaba and Erős, Tibor and Gőri, Szilvia and Halmos, Gergő and Kopek, Annamária and Margóczi, Katalin and Miklay, Gábor and Milon, László and Podmaniczky, László and Sárvári, János and Schmidt, András and lin Sipos, Kata and Siposs, Viktória and Standovár, Tibor and Szigetvári, Csaba and Szemethy, László and Tóth, Balázs and Tóth, László and Tóth, Péter and Török, Katalin and Török, Péter and Vadász, Csaba and Varga, Ildikó and J Sutherland, William and Báldi, András}, doi = {10.1016/j.jnc.2015.09.010}, journal-iso = {J NAT CONSERV}, journal = {JOURNAL FOR NATURE CONSERVATION}, volume = {28}, unique-id = {2950976}, issn = {1617-1381}, year = {2015}, eissn = {1618-1093}, pages = {133-148}, orcid-numbers = {Tormáné Kovács, Eszter/0000-0001-8509-6432; Balázs, Bálint/0000-0001-6937-499X; Csányi, Sándor/0000-0001-7757-7156; Standovár, Tibor/0000-0002-4686-3456; Báldi, András/0000-0001-6063-3721} } @article{MTMT:2763607, title = {Harnessing the biodiversity value of Central and Eastern European farmland}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2763607}, author = {Sutcliffe, LME and Batáry, Péter and Kormann, U and Báldi, András and Dicks, LV and Herzon, I and Kleijn, D and Tryjanowski, P and Apostolova, I and Arlettaz, R and Aunins, A and Aviron, S and Baležentiene, L and Fischer, C and Halada, L and Hartel, T and Helm, A and Hristov, I and Jelaska, SD and Kaligaric, M and Kamp, J and Klimek, S and Koorberg, P and Kostiuková, J and Kovács-Hostyánszki, Anikó and Kuemmerle, T and Leuschner, C and Lindborg, R and Loos, J and Maccherini, S and Marja, Riho and Máthé, O and Paulini, I and Proença, V and Rey-Benayas, J and F, Xavier S and Seifert, C and Stalenga, J and Timaeus, J and Török, Péter and van Swaay, C and Viik, E and Tscharntke, T}, doi = {10.1111/ddi.12288}, journal-iso = {DIVERS DISTRIB}, journal = {DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTIONS}, volume = {21}, unique-id = {2763607}, issn = {1366-9516}, year = {2015}, eissn = {1472-4642}, pages = {722-730}, orcid-numbers = {Batáry, Péter/0000-0002-1017-6996; Báldi, András/0000-0001-6063-3721} } @article{MTMT:2848062, title = {The history and natural regeneration of a secondary oak-beech woodland on a former wood-pasture in Hungary}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2848062}, author = {Varga, Anna and Ódor, Péter and Molnár, Zsolt and Bölöni, János}, doi = {10.5586/asbp.2015.005}, journal-iso = {ACTA SOC BOT POL}, journal = {ACTA SOCIETATIS BOTANICORUM POLONIAE}, volume = {84}, unique-id = {2848062}, issn = {0001-6977}, year = {2015}, eissn = {2083-9480}, pages = {215-225}, orcid-numbers = {Ódor, Péter/0000-0003-1729-8897} } @article{MTMT:2435449, title = {Small-scale traditional management of highly species-rich grasslands in the Carpathians}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2435449}, author = {Babai, Dániel and Molnár, Zsolt}, doi = {10.1016/j.agee.2013.08.018}, journal-iso = {AGR ECOSYST ENVIRON}, journal = {AGRICULTURE ECOSYSTEMS & ENVIRONMENT}, volume = {182}, unique-id = {2435449}, issn = {0167-8809}, abstract = {Abandonment or change of traditional (pre-modern) management systems threaten semi-natural grasslands worldwide. Understanding existing traditional grassland management could greatly help to improve our ability to preserve biodiversity in traditionally managed farmlands. We studied the management of species-rich man-made grasslands (ca. 32-52 vascular plant species on 16 m2) and the related traditional ecological knowledge in Gyimes (Romania), where more than 40,000 hectares of meadows and pastures are still managed traditionally. Methods of ecological anthropology e.g. participatory field work, semi-structured interviews (33 interviewees), and free listings were used. Csángós (people living in these valleys of the Carpathians) distinguish hay meadows based on manuring: nearby and distant hay meadows. Pastures are classified into pastures near settlements, mountain pastures, and pastures for sheep. Traditional management of meadows includes mowing, cleaning, mowing-date rotation of tracts, amelioration with hayseed and Onobrychis viciifolia seeds, manuring, manual thinning of unwanted plants, suppression of mosses, and small-scale drainage. We argue that the mowing-date rotation system found in Gyimes is a unique land-use practice that could greatly enhance biodiversity together with hayseed scattering. Treatment of pastures is more simple: sectional cleaning of shrubs/trees, and burning and corralling against Nardus. The goal of Csángós is not to protect biodiversity, but to keep their grasslands in good condition for a long run, and thus ascertain the availability of hay in the needed quantity and quality. We argue that subsidy systems should encourage the maintenance of this and similar systems, support the still existing local traditional communities and also in protected areas management systems should build on the experiences of these small-scale traditional farmers. © 2013.}, keywords = {conservation management; ecosystem service; NATURA 2000; Traditional ecological knowledge; Small-scale farming; Hay meadow}, year = {2014}, eissn = {1873-2305}, pages = {123-130} } @article{MTMT:2601021, title = {Effects of forest heterogeneity on the efficiency of caterpillar control service provided by birds in temperate oak forests}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2601021}, author = {Bereczki, Krisztina and Ódor, Péter and Csóka, György and Mag, Zsuzsa and Báldi, András}, doi = {10.1016/j.foreco.2014.05.001}, journal-iso = {FOREST ECOL MANAG}, journal = {FOREST ECOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT}, volume = {327}, unique-id = {2601021}, issn = {0378-1127}, keywords = {PREDATION; Forest management; pest control; ecosystem service; Forest structure; Leaf damage}, year = {2014}, eissn = {1872-7042}, pages = {96-105}, orcid-numbers = {Ódor, Péter/0000-0003-1729-8897; Csóka, György/0000-0001-9132-4825; Báldi, András/0000-0001-6063-3721} } @article{MTMT:2464331, title = {A new framework for understanding Pannonian vegetation patterns: regularities, deviations and uniqueness.}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2464331}, author = {Fekete, Gábor and Molnár, Zsolt and Magyari, Enikő Katalin and Somodi, Imelda and Varga, Zoltán Sándor}, doi = {10.1556/ComEc.15.2014.1.2}, journal-iso = {COMMUNITY ECOL}, journal = {COMMUNITY ECOLOGY}, volume = {15}, unique-id = {2464331}, issn = {1585-8553}, year = {2014}, eissn = {1588-2756}, pages = {12-26}, orcid-numbers = {Magyari, Enikő Katalin/0000-0002-2844-8937} } @article{MTMT:2713458, title = {A holistic approach to studying social-ecological systems and its application to Southern Transylvania}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2713458}, author = {Hanspach, J and Hartel, T and Milcu, A and Mikulcak, F and Dorresteijn, I and Loos, J and von Wehrden, H and Kuemmerle, T and Abson, D and Kovács-Hostyánszki, Anikó and Báldi, András and Fischer, J}, doi = {10.5751/ES-06915-190432}, journal-iso = {ECOL SOC}, journal = {ECOLOGY AND SOCIETY}, volume = {19}, unique-id = {2713458}, issn = {1708-3087}, year = {2014}, orcid-numbers = {Báldi, András/0000-0001-6063-3721} } @article{MTMT:2538244, title = {Birds protected by national legislation show improved population trends in Eastern Europe}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2538244}, author = {Koleček, J and Schleuning, M and Burfield, IJ and Báldi, András and Böhning-Gaese, K and Devictor, V and Fernández-García, JM and Hořák, D and Van, Turnhout C A M and Hnatyna, O and Reif, J}, doi = {10.1016/j.biocon.2014.02.029}, journal-iso = {BIOL CONSERV}, journal = {BIOLOGICAL CONSERVATION}, volume = {172}, unique-id = {2538244}, issn = {0006-3207}, year = {2014}, eissn = {1873-2917}, pages = {109-116}, orcid-numbers = {Báldi, András/0000-0001-6063-3721} } @article{MTMT:2466566, title = {Perception and Management of Spatio-Temporal Pasture Heterogeneity by Hungarian Herders.}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2466566}, author = {Molnár, Zsolt}, doi = {10.2111/REM-D-13-00082.1}, journal-iso = {RANGELAND ECOL MANAG}, journal = {RANGELAND ECOLOGY & MANAGEMENT}, volume = {67}, unique-id = {2466566}, issn = {1550-7424}, year = {2014}, eissn = {1551-5028}, pages = {107-118} } @article{MTMT:2599465, title = {EU agricultural reform fails on biodiversity}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2599465}, author = {Pe'er, G and Dicks, L V and Visconti, P and Arlettaz, R and Báldi, András and Benton, T G and Collins, S and Dieterich, M and Gregory, R D and Hartig, F and Henle, K and Hobson, P R and Kleijn, D and Neumann, R K and Robijns, T and Schmidt, J and Shwartz, A and Sutherland, W J and Turbé, A and Wulf, F and Scott, A V}, doi = {10.1126/science.1253425}, journal-iso = {SCIENCE}, journal = {SCIENCE}, volume = {344}, unique-id = {2599465}, issn = {0036-8075}, year = {2014}, eissn = {1095-9203}, pages = {1090-1092}, orcid-numbers = {Báldi, András/0000-0001-6063-3721} } @{MTMT:2735897, title = {The Role of Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Managing Wood-pastures.}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2735897}, author = {Varga, Anna and Molnár, Zsolt}, booktitle = {European Wood-pastures in Transition. They are under rapid decline all over Europe because of changes in land use, tree cutting, and lack of regeneration. In this study we characterized the structure, condition and threats of wood-pastures in a traditional rural region in Romania. Forty-two wood-pastures were surveyed, as well as 15 forest sites for comparison. All wood-pasture sites were described via four groups of variables: condition, management, site, and landscape context. Forest sites were dominated by Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) and Beech (Fagus sylvatica), whereas wood-pastures were dominated by Oak (Quercus sp.) and various species of fruit trees. Most wood-pastures contained trees classified as 'ancient' but no such trees were found in forests. The proportion of dead trees was positively related to forest cover within 300 m around the wood-pasture. Models that included management, site and landscape-related variables best explained the prelevance of Oak, Beech, Hornbeam and Pear trees in wood-pastures. Large oaks and horn-beams were more likely to be dead or affected by uncontrolled pasture burning than small oaks and other tree species. Our results show that ancient wood-pastures are common in this rural region, and they may be more common in Eastern Europe than previously thought. There is an urgent need for research, legal recognition and conservation management of wood-pastures as distinct landscape elements for their cultural, ecological and agricultural importance.
