Seven cores were chosen for petrographic and stable isotope investigations aiming to reconstruct the paragenetic sequence with special regard to the dolomitization and hydrothermal events. Five lithotypes were differentiated: (i) dolomite, (ii) sandy, silty, clayey dolomite, and dolomarl, (iii), dolomitic siltstone and sandstone, (iv) dolomitic limestone, and (v) limestone. In these lithotypes, three types of dolomites are present: non-ferroan replacive, ferroan replacive, and ferroan cement. Fabric retentive and fabric destructive non-ferroan replacive dolomitization are interpreted to have occurred by seepage reflux. Supporting evidence includes the presence gypsum and anhydrite in the Lower Triassic beds. Stable isotope values of the ferroan dolomite (delta O-18 of -10.7 to -4.2 parts per thousand and delta C-13 of 4.8 to 4.7 parts per thousand) suggest dolomitization by fluids of relatively high temperature. The similar stable isotope values (delta O-18 of -9.3 to -5.8 parts per thousand and delta C-13 of -1.9 to 2.5 parts per thousand) of the non-ferroan dolomite phase suggest that the reflux dolomite was overprinted by this second dolomitization event. Traces of exotic minerals, such as barite, chalcopyrite, galena and sulphosalts were found as fillings of vugs and fractures in the dolomite-cemented sandstone. The metals could have been sourced from the underlying Permian red sandstone beds. Across the field sites we see examples of disaggregation to cataclastic DB sets and evidence of frequent reactivation by discrete faulting. Thin section analysis, cross-cutting relationships and well-defined time constraints of analysed brittle structures demonstrate that with increased burial depth, DB deformation mechanisms progressed from granular flow to cataclasis. The DB sets were classified into 10 deformation phases based on formerly published independent fault-slip analysis and structural mapping. Subsidence curves were constructed for each stratigraphic level involved in deformation and were used along with the intersection of deformation episodes to calculate the depth intervals of DB generations and subsequent structural elements. The DB formation depths obtained were transferred to the depth range of the related mechanisms. This combined methodology permits a more quantitative approach to determine the changes in the deformation mechanisms with depth. Our results show that granular flow (disaggregation bands) dominates down to 100-150 m as the earliest deformation structure, followed by weak then moderate cataclasis. The transition between weak and moderate cataclasis is at approximately 300 +/- 100 m for host rock rich in feldspar or fragile tuffitic components and from around 900 +/- 100 m in quartz-rich sediments. In addition, deformation by frictional sliding concentrates on discrete fault planes at the margin of cataclastic bands or on new fracture planes from similar to 500 +/- 100 m in volcanoclastic or feldspar rich host rocks, and 1000 +/- 100 m in quartz-rich host rocks. We suggest that burial-induced diagenetic processes is dependent on subsidence history, and partly in connection with regional fluid migration path, control the transition from moderate or advanced cataclasis to discrete fault slip. Its exact paleo-position and relation to other structural blocks is disputed for a long time. Detrital zircon U–Pb dating, heavy mineral analysis and petrographical examination of Carnian to Pliensbachian sandstone members lead to better understanding of the provenance of clastic deposits after the Ladinian–Carnian carbonate to siliciclastic facies shift in the Southwestern Tisza Megaunit. Investigations allow for constraining its paleogeographic relation to adjacent units. The Carnian and Pliensbachian siliciclastics of the Villány Hills derive from inside the Southwestern Tisza Megaunit, i.e. the medium-grade polymetamorphic rocks of the adjacent Slavonian Mountains or similar basement fragments. The Upper Triassic clastic deposits of the Mecsek Mountains most likely derive from Variscan felsic plutonic rocks of the local basement or partially from the Southern/Southwestern Bohemian Massif. A country-wide screening found this 800–1000 m thick succession the most suitable for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste in Hungary, and research into this formation has consequently been intensified since. The investigations included a detailed study of the sedimentological characteristics. Data obtained by mapping of the 25 km2 outcrop area of the formation and from more than 40 boreholes were processed. The sedimentary structures were investigated on outcrop to microscopic scales, and cycles in the succession were interpreted. The main lithofacies, sedimentary structures and ichnofossils are presented. They indicate that the major part of the succession was deposited in a playa mudflat and is not of lacustrine origin in a strict sense. The lake sediments are represented by laminated and ripple-marked/flaser-type cross-laminated claystones and siltstones and by massive dolomites; trace fossils include crawling traces and burrows. Partial or complete drying out of the lake commonly occurred after the formation of carbonate mud by evaporation. Periodic fluvial influx is recorded by cross-bedded sandstones and unsorted gravelly sandstones of up to pebble-sized angular grains. Fenestral and stromatolitic structures reflect the repeated appearance of playa mudflat conditions. The silty claystones, which compose the major part of the succession, lost their primary structures due to pedogenic processes and indicate prolonged subaerial intervals with soil formation and only ephemeral inundations. The presence of pedogenic carbonate concretions supports the interpretation of an arid climate and a relatively shallow groundwater table. Drying-out events shown by desiccation cracks and authigenic breccias can be traced all over the succession. The structure of the Pannonian basin is the result of distinct modes of Mid-Late Miocene extension exerting a profound effect on the lithospheric configuration, which continues even today. Extrapolation of the present-day high heat flow in the basin, corrected for the blanketing effect of the basin fill, indicates a hot and thin lithosphere at the onset of extension. This initial condition, combined with the relatively thick crust inherited from earlier Alpine compressional episodes, appears to be responsible for the core complex type extension at the beginning of the syn-rift period. This type of extension is well documented in the northwestern Pannonian basin. Newly obtained deep reflection seismic and fission-track data integrated with well data from the southeastern part of the basin suggests that it developed in a similar fashion. Shortly after the initial period, the style of syn-rift extension changed to a wide-rift style, covering an area of much larger geographic extent. The associated normal faults revealed by industry reflection seismic data tend to dominate within the upper crust, obscuring pre-existing structures. However, several deep seismic profiles, constrained by gravity and geothermal modeling, image the entire lithosphere beneath the basin. It is the Mid-Miocene synrift extension which is still reflected in the structure of the Pannonian lithosphere, on the scale of the whole basin system. The gradually diminishing extension during the Late Miocene/Pliocene could not advance to the localization of extension into narrow rift zones in the Pannonian region except some deep subbasins such as the Mako/Bekes and Danube basins. These basins are underlain coincidently by anomalously thin crust (22-25 km) and lithosphere (45-60 km). Significant departures (up to 130 mW m -2) from the average present-day surface heat flow for the initiation of two newly defined narrow rift zones (Tisza and Duna) in the Pannonian basin system. Ophiolite-derived elastic components in both formations indicate a close genetic relationship with each other and with the activity of the basin-margin Darno Fault, which seems to correspond with the coeval shoreline. The Darno Conglomerate was part of a small fault-controlled fan-delta supplying coarse clastics into the sea where the Petervasara Sandstone deposited. The conglomerates occur as small lobes interbedded within a field of tidally-driven sand waves. The coarse-grained clastics, which were admired to the main material of the sandstone, have been derived from Triassic-Jurassic ophiolite-related series (Meliata nappes) east of the Darno Fault. The composition of the lobes indicates that they were formed as small spit-like platforms attached to the fan-deltas of the Darno Conglomerate. As base level rose spits became drowned and their sediment was washed into the basin and reworked by the strong northward-directed tidal currents into elongated lobes 'mimicking' sand waves. A reduction in the amount of the less resistant pebble components of ophiolite-related origin and a relative enrichment of the resistant components towards the west indicate that pebbles had partly been transported in the offshore direction.
