Knowledge of the dependence of plasma properties and edge transport barrier formation on main ion species is critical in view of the initial, low-activation phase of ITER operations in hydrogen or helium and of its implications on the subsequent operation in deuterium-tritium. The favourable scaling of global energy confinement time with isotope mass, which has been observed in many tokamak experiments, remains largely unexplained theoretically. Moreover, the mass scaling observed in experiments varies depending on the plasma edge conditions. In preparation for upcoming deuterium-tritium experiments in the JET tokamak with the ITER-like Be/W Wall (JET-ILW), a thorough experimental investigation of isotope effects in hydrogen, deuterium and tritium plasmas is being carried out, in order to provide stringent tests of plasma energy, particle and momentum transport models. Recent hydrogen and deuterium isotope experiments in JET-ILW on L-H power threshold, L-mode and H-mode confinement are reviewed and discussed in the context of past and more recent isotope experiments in tokamak plasmas, highlighting common elements as well as contrasting observations that have been reported. electron temperature and density during individual ELM (edge localized mode) cycles has been examined closely for a series of type I ELMy H-mode discharges with different fuelling levels and medium collisionality. A characterization of the typical ELM recovery cycle has been established. Distinct phases have been observed in the build-up of the plasma edge profiles after their relaxation caused by the ELM crash. A thorough evaluation of ELM-synchronized data has revealed that the recovery of the electron temperature and density pedestals are correlated. A new behaviour has been discovered in the build-up phase of the plasma edge, during which the temperature stagnates while the density profile steepens. It was found that in some cases the ELM is triggered immediately after the recovery of the pressure profile, consistent with the expectations from edge ballooning theory, while in other cases all edge profiles reached their final shape a long time before the next ELM occurred. Different measurement techniques for measuring the same subset of physical parameters provide complementary and redundant data for, e.g., improving the reliability of physical parameters, increasing the spatial and temporal resolution of profiles, and resolving data inconsistencies. The concept of integrated data analysis within the framework of Bayesian probability theory was applied to the combined analysis of lithium beam emission spectroscopy (LIB), deuterium cyanide laser interferometry, electron cyclotron emission (ECE), and Thomson scattering spectroscopy. The four heterogeneous diagnostics enable the simultaneous estimation of electron density and temperature profiles with high spatial and temporal resolution. The coherent analysis of the profile diagnostics allows one to consider diagnostic interdependencies correlating density and temperature profiles, e.g., ECE shine-through, and diagnostics alignment. The phase resolution of the circuit is 1/64 period and its dynamic range is 256 periods. This circuit has been developed for fusion plasma interferometry with submillimeter waves on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The results from interferometric density measurement are discussed and compared to those obtained with the previously used phase detectors, especially with respect to the occurrence of phase jumps. It is illustrated that the new phase measurement provides a powerful tool for automatic real-time validation of the measured density, which is important for feedback algorithms that are sensitive to
