Detrital zircon U–Pb dating, heavy mineral analysis and petrographical examination of Carnian to Pliensbachian sandstone members lead to better understanding of the provenance of clastic deposits after the Ladinian–Carnian carbonate to siliciclastic facies shift in the Southwestern Tisza Megaunit. Investigations allow for constraining its paleogeographic relation to adjacent units. The Carnian and Pliensbachian siliciclastics of the Villány Hills derive from inside the Southwestern Tisza Megaunit, i.e. the medium-grade polymetamorphic rocks of the adjacent Slavonian Mountains or similar basement fragments. Furthermore, this formation has long been well-known as the source of the gravel material of the younger sedimentary siliciclastic formations in the area. Due to the uranium ore exploration deep drillings of the second half of the 20th century, details about the subsurface regions of the formation are also well-documented; these regions include the Western Mecsek Mts, the northern foreland of the Villány Mts and the Máriakéménd–Bár–Báta Range. According to the previous reports of uranium ore exploration and other studies based on them (SZEDERKÉNYI 1962, BARABÁSNÉ STUHL 1988, FÜLÖP 1994, BARABÁS & BARABÁSNÉ STUHL 1998, JAKAB 2005), the material of the outcrop is a lava rock. In the early stage of the research only PANTÓ (in BOCZÁN et al. 1966) mentioned the possibility of a pyroclastic (ignimbrite) origin. The later petrographic descriptions of the rocks recognised the common appearance of flattened, oriented pumices and this made it necessary to implement a process of reambulation. As the first step in this process, HIDASI et al. (2015) documented detailed petrographic descriptions of the deep-drilling and gravel material of the formation and, according his work, many textural features indicate a pyroclastic flow origin. In this study, detailed macroscopic and microscopic documentation is given of surficial samples of Gyűrűfű Rhyolite (from area between the villages of Gyűrűfű and Dinnyeberki, Western Mecsek Mts). Many textural features (e.g. devitrified pumices, former glass shards, poor sorting, fragmented phenocrysts) of the pyroclastic flow deposits were also observed. In this paper the surficial rock material of the formation is presented as an altered, locally strongly- welded, crystal-rich, pumice-bearing lapilli tuff. According to the intensity of the welding, 2 lithofacies were distinguished. The eutaxitic, strongly-welded rock samples could have their origin in the medium or greater depth of the proximal part of the pyroclastic flows; the latter filled a former valley in the area of Gyűrűfű. The non-welded material is probably derived from the lowermost, upper, sideward or distal part of the pyroclastic flows. Alongside the petrographic description, this study was supplemented with preliminary zircon examinations as part of the preparations for U-Pb radiometric dating. From the examined samples more than 200 pieces of zircon grains were documented. Based on this database, the respective zircon populations of the two lithofacies were analysed and compared (using statistical parameters). Zircon crystals were found both in the matrix and within the phenocrysts of the rock samples. The high amount of idiomorphic and hipidomorphic zircon grains that appear in the groundmass shows the possibility of zircon crystallization within the rock-forming magma. Most of the zircon grains are fragmented and this fact serves as further evidence of a pyroclastic origin. The examined zircon crystals often show zonation and contain xenocrystic cores; these details need to be taken into account when carrying out U-Pb radiometric dating.}, year = {2016}, eissn = {2559-902X}, pages = {335-354}, orcid-numbers = {Szemerédi, Máté/0000-0002-7432-8418; Raucsikné Varga, Andrea Beáta/0000-0002-8673-1482; Haranginé Lukács, Réka/0000-0002-2338-4209; Pál-Molnár, Elemér/0000-0002-9606-0133} } @article{MTMT:2474971, title = {Geochemistry of the Görcsöny Ridge amphibolites (Tisza Unit, SW Hungary) and its geodynamic consequences}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2474971}, author = {M. A country-wide screening found this 800–1000 m thick succession the most suitable for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste in Hungary, and research into this formation has consequently been intensified since. The investigations included a detailed study of the sedimentological characteristics. Data obtained by mapping of the 25 km2 outcrop area of the formation and from more than 40 boreholes were processed. The sedimentary structures were investigated on outcrop to microscopic scales, and cycles in the succession were interpreted. The main lithofacies, sedimentary structures and ichnofossils are presented. They indicate that the major part of the succession was deposited in a playa mudflat and is not of lacustrine origin in a strict sense. The lake sediments are represented by laminated and ripple-marked/flaser-type cross-laminated claystones and siltstones and by massive dolomites; trace fossils include crawling traces and burrows. Partial or complete drying out of the lake commonly occurred after the formation of carbonate mud by evaporation. Periodic fluvial influx is recorded by cross-bedded sandstones and unsorted gravelly sandstones of up to pebble-sized angular grains. Fenestral and stromatolitic structures reflect the repeated appearance of playa mudflat conditions. The silty claystones, which compose the major part of the succession, lost their primary structures due to pedogenic processes and indicate prolonged subaerial intervals with soil formation and only ephemeral inundations. The presence of pedogenic carbonate concretions supports the interpretation of an arid climate and a relatively shallow groundwater table. Drying-out events shown by desiccation cracks and authigenic breccias can be traced all over the succession. The various facies form small-scale sedimentary cycles showing a shallowing-upward trend and the growing influence of aridity and subaerial exposure.}, year = {2010}, eissn = {2080-6574}, pages = {27-41}, orcid-numbers = {Sebe, Krisztina/0000-0002-4647-2199; Halász, Amadé/0000-0003-4582-8883} } @inbook{MTMT:1382887, title = {A Baksai Komplexum posztmetamorf fluidum evolúciója}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1382887}, author = {Fintor, Krisztián and M. These terranes are composed of different Mesozoic continental and oceanic fragments that were each assembled during a complex Late Jurassic-Cretaceous Palaeogene history. Palaeomagnetic and tectonic data suggest that the Carpathians are built up by two major oroclinal bends. The Alcapa bend has the Meliata oceanic unit, correlated with the Dinaric Vardar ophiolite, in its core. It is composed of the Western Carpathians, Eastern Alps and Southern Alcapa units (Transdanubian Range, Bukk). This terrane finds its continuation in the High Karst margin of the Dinarides. Further elements of the Alcapa terrane are thought to be derived from collided microcontinents: Czorsztyn in the N and a carbonate unit (Tisza?) in the SE. The Tisza-Dacia bend has the Vardar oceanic unit in its core. It is composed of the Bihor and Getic microcontinents. This terrane finds its continuation in the Serbo-Macedonian Massif of the Balkans. The Bihor-Getic microcontinent originally laid east of the Western Carpathians and filled the present Carpathian embayment in the Late Palaeozoic-Early Mesozoic. The Vardar ocean occupied an intermediate position between the Western Carpathian-Austroalpine-Transdanubian-High Karst margin and the Bihor-Getic-Serbo-Macedonian microcontinent. The Vardar and Pindos oceans were opened in the heart of the Mediterranean-Adriatic microcontinent in the Late Permian-Middle Triassic. Vardar subducted by the end of Jurassic, causing the Bihor-Getic-Serbo-Macedonian microcontinent to collide with the internal Dinaric-Western Carpathian margin. An external Penninic-Vahic ocean tract began opening in the Early Jurassic, separating the Austroalpine-Western Carpathian microcontinent (and its fauna) from the European shelf. Further east, the Severin-Ceahlau-Magura also began opening in the Early Jurassic, but final separation of the Bihor-Getic ribbon (and its fauna) from the European shelf did not take place until the late Middle Jurassic. The Alcapa and the Tisza-Dacia were bending during the Albian-Maastrichtian. The two oroclinal bends were finally opposed and pushed into the gates of the Carpathian embayment during the Palaeogene and Neogene. At that time, the main NS shortening in distant Alpine and Hellenic sectors was linked by a broader right-lateral shear zone along the former Vardar suture. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
