Charcoal 14C ages are found to be protocol-dependent, with ages obtained from the high temperature (800 °C) fraction of the two-step combustion (TSC) protocol being always the oldest and likely most reliable. One step combustion (OSC) at 1000 °C produces comparable ages with those obtained from the low temperature (400 °C) fraction of the TSC protocol. Discrepancies between the ABA-TSC400 and TSC800 ages become larger for older, and less well-preserved charcoal fragments. Testing of shell ages against those of charcoals reveals that Succineidae sp., Chondrula tridens, Trochulus hispidus and members of the family Clausiliidae yield 14C ages that are statistically indistinguishable from charcoals recovered from the same stratigraphic interval, or with the ABA-TSC800 charcoal age. Thus, these species show great potential for creating accurate and precise chronologies for loess records within the useful range (<~40 ka) of 14C-dating of land snails. Conservative estimates of 95% uncertainties of the resulting Bayesian age-depth models are in the range of 500-800 yr. However, these uncertainties are strongly dependent on the number of dates available and the resolution of sampling, but they are usually well below those of luminescence chronologies. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.}, keywords = {Quaternary; radiocarbon dating; charcoal; LAND SNAIL; mollusc; loess}, year = {2016}, eissn = {1878-0350}, pages = {43-53}, orcid-numbers = {Újvári, Gábor/0000-0002-2816-6155; Páll-Gergely, Barna/0000-0002-6167-7221} } @article{MTMT:2960563, title = {ESTABLISHING A FIRM CHRONOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK FOR NEOLITHIC AND EARLY DYNASTIC ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE SHANGLUO AREA, CENTRAL CHINA}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2960563}, author = {Zhu, YZ and Cheng, P and Yu, SY and Yu, HG and Kang, ZH and Yang, YC and Jull, Timothy AJ and Lange, T and Zhou, WJ}, journal-iso = {RADIOCARBON}, journal = {RADIOCARBON}, volume = {52}, unique-id = {2960563}, issn = {0033-8222}, year = {2010}, eissn = {1945-5755}, pages = {466-478} } @article{MTMT:2960596, title = {Development of low-background vacuum extraction and graphitization systems for C-14 dating of old (40-60ka) samples}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2960596}, author = {Pigati, JS and Quade, J and Wilson, J and Jull, Timothy AJ and Lifton, NA}, doi = {10.1016/j.quaint.2006.12.006}, journal-iso = {QUATERN INT}, journal = {QUATERNARY INTERNATIONAL}, volume = {166}, unique-id = {2960596}, issn = {1040-6182}, year = {2007}, eissn = {1873-4553}, pages = {4-14} } @article{MTMT:2960692, title = {Stepped-combustion C-14 dating of sediment: A comparison with established techniques}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2960692}, author = {McGeehin, J and Burr, GS and Jull, Timothy AJ and Reines, D and Gosse, J and Davis, PT and Muhs, D and Southon, JR}, journal-iso = {RADIOCARBON}, journal = {RADIOCARBON}, volume = {43}, unique-id = {2960692}, issn = {0033-8222}, year = {2001}, eissn = {1945-5755}, pages = {255-261} } @article{MTMT:2960716, title = {The reliability of AMS radiocarbon dating of shells from China}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2960716}, author = {Zhou, WJ and Head, MJ and Wang, FB and Donahue, DJ and Jull, Timothy AJ}, journal-iso = {RADIOCARBON}, journal = {RADIOCARBON}, volume = {41}, unique-id = {2960716}, issn = {0033-8222}, year = {1999}, eissn = {1945-5755}, pages = {17-24} } @article{MTMT:2960739, title = {Radiocarbon ams dating of pollen concentrated from eolian sediments: Implications for monsoon climate change since the late Quaternary}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2960739}, author = {Zhou, WJ and Donahue, D and Jull, Timothy AJ}, journal-iso = {RADIOCARBON}, journal = {RADIOCARBON}, volume = {39}, unique-id = {2960739}, issn = {0033-8222}, year = {1997}, eissn = {1945-5755}, pages = {19-26} } @article{MTMT:2960801, title = {ISOTOPE-RATIO AND BACKGROUND CORRECTIONS FOR ACCELERATOR MASS-SPECTROMETRY RADIOCARBON MEASUREMENTS}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2960801}, author = {DONAHUE, DJ and LINICK, TW and Jull, Timothy AJ}, journal-iso = {RADIOCARBON}, journal = {RADIOCARBON}, volume = {32}, unique-id = {2960801}, issn = {0033-8222}, year = {1990}, eissn = {1945-5755}, pages = {135-142} } @article{MTMT:2960831, title = {PREPARATION OF SMALL SAMPLES FOR C-14 ACCELERATOR TARGETS BY CATALYTIC REDUCTION OF CO}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2960831}, author = {SLOTA, PJ and Jull, Timothy AJ and LINICK, TW and TOOLIN, LJ}, journal-iso = {RADIOCARBON}, journal = {RADIOCARBON}, volume = {29}, unique-id = {2960831}, issn = {0033-8222}, year = {1987}, eissn = {1945-5755}, pages = {303-306} }
