Therefore, safeguarding and restoring ecosystem resilience is critical to support their wellbeing. Based on examples from the literature, we illustrate how IPLC participate in restoration activities maintaining traditional practices, restoring land degraded by outsiders, and joining outside groups seeking to restore ecosystems. Our review also provides examples of how Indigenous and local knowledge can be incorporated in the planning, execution, and monitoring of restoration activities. However, not all restoration initiatives engaging IPLC are beneficial or successful, and the factors that lead to success are not fully known. While local involvement in restoration projects is often mentioned as an element of success, this is primarily associated to projects that actively involve IPLC in co-designing restoration activities affecting their territories, ensure both short-term direct benefits to IPLC and long-term support of the maintenance of restored areas, and recognize IPLC local traditions and customary institutions. Based on these examples, we argue that IPLC should be a more important focus in any post-2020 CBD agenda on restoration. This article is protected by copyright. This represents over a quarter of the world's land surface, and intersects about 40% of all terrestrial protected areas and ecologically intact landscapes (for example, boreal and tropical primary forests, savannas and marshes). Our results add to growing evidence that recognizing Indigenous Peoples' rights to land, benefit sharing and institutions is essential to meeting local and global conservation goals. Lényegesnek tartjuk a hazai természetvédelem sikeressége érdekében, hogy a természetvédelemben dolgozók nagyobb mértékben hozzáférjenek a társadalomtudományi tudáshoz, a részvételi módszerek tárházához és egyben azok kritikai szempontú értékeléséhez.}, year = {2016}, eissn = {2786-3506}, pages = {131-154}, orcid-numbers = {Kiss, Gabriella/0000-0002-5817-9037; Tormáné Kovács, Eszter/0000-0001-8509-6432} } @article{MTMT:3077024, title = {Changing year-round habitat use of extensively grazing cattle, sheep and pigs in East-Central Europe between 1940 and 2014: Consequences for conservation and policy}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/3077024}, author = {Varga, Anna and Molnár, Zsolt and Biró, Marianna and Demeter, László and Gellény, Krisztina and Miókovics, E and Molnár, Ábel Péter and Molnár, K and Ujházy, Noémi and Ulicsni, Viktor and Babai, Dániel}, doi = {10.1016/j.agee.2016.05.018}, journal-iso = {AGR ECOSYST ENVIRON}, journal = {AGRICULTURE ECOSYSTEMS & ENVIRONMENT}, volume = {234}, unique-id = {3077024}, issn = {0167-8809}, abstract = {Abstract Many habitats in Europe have been managed by grazing for thousands of years. However, extensive grazing systems are becoming increasingly rare in the region, and there is a lack of understanding of the functioning of these systems. We carried out 147 structured interviews in 38 landscapes throughout the Carpathian Basin, with 3–5 informants/landscape. The number of actively grazing cattle, sheep and pigs, their year-round habitat use and the proportion of herds actively tended were documented for four characteristic historical periods (before, during and after socialist cooperatives and after EU Accession). The numbers of grazing cattle and sheep had decreased substantially by 2010 (by 71% and 49%, respectively), while pig grazing almost disappeared by the 1970s. Cattle primarily grazed habitats with taller vegetation. Sheep grazed dry pastures and stubbles, while pigs were driven into marshes and forests. In general, the importance of dry and wet grasslands increased, while the significance of marshes, stubble fields, vegetation along linear elements, second growth on hay meadows, wood-pastures and forests decreased over time. Approximately half of the grazed habitats were not typical pasture grasslands, and functioned as supplementary pastures during droughts, autumn and winter. The number of habitat types grazed per month per site dropped, and herding decreased substantially, in particular in the case of cattle and pigs. Contributing factors of the economic and social changes of the examined period included the collapse of the communist-era legal framework, the intensification of livestock husbandry, EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) regulations, and the rise of a nature conservation ethic. We conclude that agricultural policies should take into account the full spectrum of habitat types necessary for the effective operation of extensive grazing systems. We argue that conservation-oriented extensive grazing should use the traditional wisdom of herders but adapted to the present situations.}, keywords = {landscape ecology; land-use history; Sustainable grazing; Post-soviet; Large-scale grazing; Agroforestry systems}, year = {2016}, eissn = {1873-2305}, pages = {142-153}, orcid-numbers = {Demeter, László/0000-0003-2343-2570; Ujházy, Noémi/0000-0001-8854-2186; Ulicsni, Viktor/0000-0002-3549-7972} } @article{MTMT:2920143, title = {Do conservation and agri-environmental regulations effectively support traditional small-scale farming in East-Central European cultural landscapes?}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2920143}, author = {Babai, Dániel and Tóth, A. and Szentirmai, I. and Biró, Marianna and Máté, A. and Demeter, L. and Szépligeti, Mátyás and Varga, Anna and Molnár, Ábel Péter and Kun, Róbert and Molnár, Zsolt}, doi = {10.1007/s10531-015-0971-z}, journal-iso = {BIODIVERS CONSERV}, journal = {BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION}, volume = {24}, unique-id = {2920143}, issn = {0960-3115}, year = {2015}, eissn = {1572-9710}, pages = {3305-3327} } @article{MTMT:2938412, title = {Érintettek percepcióinak feltárása egy védett ragadozómadarakkal kapcsolatos konfliktusban a Jászság SPA részvételi tervezési folyamata során}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2938412}, author = {Fabók, Veronika and Tormáné Kovács, Eszter and Kalóczkai, Ágnes}, journal-iso = {TERMÉSZETVÉD KÖZLEM}, journal = {TERMÉSZETVÉDELMI KÖZLEMÉNYEK}, volume = {21}, unique-id = {2938412}, issn = {1216-4585}, year = {2015}, eissn = {2786-3506}, pages = {64-75}, orcid-numbers = {Tormáné Kovács, Eszter/0000-0001-8509-6432} } @article{MTMT:2939851, title = {A földhasználati konfliktusok tényezői és dinamikája védett természeti területeken}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/2939851}, author = {Kalóczkai, Ágnes and Pataki, György and Kelemen, Eszter and Tormáné Kovács, Eszter and Fabók, Veronika}, journal-iso = {TERMÉSZETVÉD KÖZLEM}, journal = {TERMÉSZETVÉDELMI KÖZLEMÉNYEK}, volume = {21}, unique-id = {2939851}, issn = {1216-4585}, year = {2015}, eissn = {2786-3506}, pages = {97-107}, orcid-numbers = {Tormáné Kovács, Eszter/0000-0001-8509-6432} } @article{MTMT:3197946, title = {The ground vegetation management of wood-pastures in Romania - Insights in the past for conservation management in the future.
