However, the western parts of the Villány Mts, including Mt Nagy, are relatively understudied, though these may also harbour natural values of significant conservation importance. Based on 127 phytosociological relevés, we provide an analysis of the vegetation of Mt Nagy, in comparison with other parts of the Villány Mts. We carried out PCoA ordinations to assess the similarity of the plant communities of Mt Nagy to other parts of the Villány Mts. To characterize the naturalness of the habitats, we calculated social behaviour type spectra. We also calculated and compared the species richness of the communities. Finally, we compiled a list of protected and strictly protected plant species of Mt Nagy, based on a review of all earlier floristic publications as well as on our own observations. We found that the plant communities studied in the present article are in a good natural condition, although the calcareous scrubs and the open calcareous grasslands are degraded to a certain extent. Nevertheless, the social behaviour type spectra suggest that degradation is not too serious: although the proportion of disturbance-tolerants is high, the types indicating severe degradation (weeds, ruderal competitors and agressive aliens) are scarce or absent. The open calcareous grasslands of Mt Nagy proved to be extremely species rich. Despite its small size, the literature indicates that at least 29 protected and strictly protected plant species occur on Mt Nagy. In many regions only species-poor degraded fragments of formerly species-rich loess grasslands remained due to the agricultural intensification in the last century. To preserve and restore loess grasslands it is necessary to understand, how soil seed banks can contribute to the maintenance of diversity. We studied the vegetation and seed banks of (i) a loess grassland in a semi-natural state and (ii) a degraded loess pasture. We found that species richness was significantly lower in the degraded loess pasture (10.2 species/m2) than in the semi-natural loess grassland (27.0 species/m2). Mean seed bank densities were quite similar in the two grassland types (22,800 and 20,200 seeds/m2, respectively). Out of the frequent graminoids in the vegetation, only Poa angustifolia possessed considerable dense seed banks. Aboveground vegetation, seed bank and environmental factors were studied in three stands of the following alkali grassland types: (i) Artemisia dry alkali grasslands at highest elevations; (ii) Puccinellia high and (iii) Puccinellia low grasslands at medium to low elevations, and (iv) Juncus wet alkali grasslands at the lowest elevations. We tested the following hypotheses: (i) Seed bank species diversity and density are the highest in the most stressed grassland types, where regeneration by seeds could have a major importance in sustaining vegetation diversity. (ii) Seed bank density of hygrophytes increases with decreasing elevation, because the cover of hygrophytes in the vegetation increases with decreasing elevation. The mean seed bank density ranged from 30,104 up to 51,410 seeds/m2, which is higher than in most dry grasslands. Both the lowest seed bank density and diversity were detected in the most stressed Puccinellia high grasslands; Spergularia salina was the only abundant seed bank species (possessing at least 1000 seeds/m2). These results not supported our first hypothesis. We detected the highest seed densities of almost all hygrophyte species in the lowest-elevated Juncus grasslands. But, we did not find a significant monotonous correlation between elevation and the overall hygrophyte seed bank density; because most of the hygrophyte species were missing from the seed bank at the medium-elevated, but most saline Puccinellia grasslands. Thus, our results only partly supported the second hypothesis. In total we detected more species in the seed bank than in the aboveground vegetation which emphasises that seed bank plays an important role in sustaining the diversity of alkali grasslands. However, characteristic graminoids possessed no considerable seed bank, except for Juncus compressus (up to 38,619 seeds/m2). Here we report the results of a 9-year mowing experiment designed to suppress the spread of C. epigejos in mid-successional grasslands in Hungary. The experimental design consisted of 16 permanent plots of 3 × 3 m. Half of the plots were mowed twice a year (in June and September), the other half was left as control. Vegetation was sampled in 2 × 2 m quadrates before mowing in each year between 2001 and 2009. The effects of mowing were tested using repeated-measure analyses of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD for post hoc tests. Significant decrease of C. epigejos appeared after 2 years of mowing. Species richness increased after 4 years, while diversity after 8 years. By this time the target native species Brachypodium pinnatum become dominant. Similar trends appeared in the control plots during spontaneous succession but at much slower rates. Our results suggest that C. epigejos disappears spontaneously in secondary grassland succession after ca. 40-50 years. However, mowing twice a year can speed up this process by opening a "colonization window" to the valuable target species.
