At larger \nspatial scales ( approximately 2-30 cm), investigated by scalp \nEEG recordings, SWA has been shown to propagate globally over \nwide cortical regions as traveling waves, which has been \nproposed to serve as a temporal framework for neural plasticity. \nHowever, whether SWA dynamics at finer spatial scales also \nreflects the orderly propagation has not previously been \ninvestigated in humans. To reveal the local, finer spatial scale \n( approximately 1-6 cm) patterns of SWA propagation during non-\nREM sleep, electrocorticographic (ECoG) recordings were \nconducted from subdurally implanted electrode grids and a \nnonlinear correlation technique [mutual information (MI)] was \nimplemented. MI analysis revealed spatial maps of correlations \nbetween cortical areas demonstrating SWA propagation directions, \nspeed, and association strength. Highest correlations, \nindicating significant coupling, were detected during the \ninitial positive-going deflection of slow waves. SWA propagated \npredominantly between adjacent cortical areas, albeit spatial \nnoncontinuities were also frequently observed. MI analysis \nfurther uncovered significant convergence and divergence \npatterns. Areas receiving the most convergent activity were \nsimilar to those with high divergence rate, while reciprocal and \ncircular propagation of SWA was also frequent. We hypothesize \nthat SWA is characterized by distinct attributes depending on \nthe spatial scale observed.
