Based on the comparison of the behavior of oleic acid in the magnetic fluid and in the pure solvent (decalin), it has been concluded that the interaction between the molecules of free (unadsorbed) surfactant changes in the presence of magnetic nanoparticles. However, the system remains stable and does not form aggregates of magnetic particles or free oleic acid. These results are compared with the previously presented data for similar benzene-based magnetic fluids. Two types of highly stable ferrofluids, magnetite/ oleic acid/decalin and magnetite/myristic acid/decalin, with a low (of about 1 vol.%) magnetite content and various acid fractions (up to 25 vol.%) are examined. The aggregation of magnetic particles and surfactant molecules is shown not to occur in the indicated concentration range of the acid molecule excess. The experimental results testify to a change of the interaction between the molecules of oleic and myristic acids in the free (non-adsorbed) state, when they are dissolved in magnetic fluids, and in their solutions in decalin without magnetic particles. © L.A. Investigations of MFs based on nonpolar organic solvents with magnetite nanoparticles (2-20 nm in size) coated by various monocarboxylic acids have been performed. It is shown that the use of saturated linear acids with various alkyl chain (C12-C18) lengths instead of unsaturated oleic acid (alkyl chain C18 with a kink in the middle due to the double bond in the cis-configuration) in the classical stabilization procedure for the given type of magnetic fluids leads to a decrease in the mean size and polydispersity of nanoparticles in the final systems. The dependences of micellar aggregation number, fractional charge, charge per micelle and surface potential on surfactant concentration are analyzed. A typical increase in the micelle size with the growth in the acid content is found, which can be related to the transition from spherical to rod-like micelles. The obtained data are used for estimating surfactant micelle concentration in water-based ferrofluids stabilized with DBSA. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. The excluded volume repulsion dominates over the attraction (supposed due to van der Waals forces) for oleic and myristic acids. In turn, for stearic acid the attractive component is higher than the repulsive one; this results in a shift of the transition into the liquid crystalline state (because of molecule anisotropy) towards smaller concentrations and could explain early data on worse stabilization properties of stearic acid in ferrofluids compared to oleic and myristic acids. Their colloidal stability under physiological conditions (blood pH ∼ 7.2-7.4 and salt concentration ∼0.15 M) and more in high magnetic field gradient is crucial. Magnetite or maghemite nanoparticles are used in general. In the present work, magnetite nanoparticles were stabilized with different compounds (citric acid (CA) and phosphate) and sodium oleate (NaO) as the most used surfactant in the stabilization of MFs. The adsorption and overcharging effect were quantified, and the enhancement in salt tolerance of stabilized systems was studied. Adsorption, electrophoretic mobility and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements were performed. The electrolyte tolerance was tested in coagulation kinetic measurements. Above the adsorption saturation, the nanoparticles are stabilized in a way of combined steric and electrostatic effects. The aim was to research these two important effects and demonstrate that none of them alone is enough. The phosphate was not able to stabilize the ferrofluid in spite of our expectation, but the other two additives proved to be effective stabilizing agents. The magnetite was well stabilized by the surface complexation of CA above pH ∼ 5, however, the salt tolerance of citrate stabilized MFs remained much below the concentration of physiological salt solution, and more the dissolution of magnetite nanocrystals was enhanced due to Fe-CA complexation in aqueous medium, which may cause problems in vivo. The oleate double layers were able to stabilize magnetite nanoparticles perfectly at pH ∼ 6 preventing particle aggregation effectively even in physiological salt solution. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.
