Here we report the results of a 9-year mowing experiment designed to suppress the spread of C. epigejos in mid-successional grasslands in Hungary. The experimental design consisted of 16 permanent plots of 3 × 3 m. Half of the plots were mowed twice a year (in June and September), the other half was left as control. Vegetation was sampled in 2 × 2 m quadrates before mowing in each year between 2001 and 2009. The effects of mowing were tested using repeated-measure analyses of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD for post hoc tests. Significant decrease of C. epigejos appeared after 2 years of mowing. Species richness increased after 4 years, while diversity after 8 years. By this time the target native species Brachypodium pinnatum become dominant. Similar trends appeared in the control plots during spontaneous succession but at much slower rates. Our results suggest that C. epigejos disappears spontaneously in secondary grassland succession after ca. 40-50 years. However, mowing twice a year can speed up this process by opening a "colonization window" to the valuable target species. For successful control, mowing should be maintained for approximately 8 years. © 2011 Società Botanica Italiana. Two sites, located in the upper part of dune slopes, and another two, positioned on the lower part, were studied. In each site five 2×2 m permanent plots were surveyed between 1991 and 2002. Percentage cover was estimated three times a year. In the last study year, soil seed banks were sampled. Two vertical segments (0–5, 5–10 cm) were separately analyzed. The seedling emergence method was applied on concentrated samples. We found that the vegetation developed from open, annual dominated weedy assemblages to grasslands dominated by perennial graminoids. In the lowerpositioned sites perennial clonal grasses (Cynodon dactylon, Poa angustifolia and P. pratensis) formed more closed vegetation, which was accompanied by lower species richness compared to the upper-positioned sites. Seed density varied between 10,300 and 40,900 seeds/m2. Significantly higher seed densities were found in upper sites than in the lower ones. Annuals and short-lived perennial dicots comprised most of the seed bank. The dominant perennial graminoids also built up dense seed banks. Two sites in the low and two in the high parts of the dunes were chosen and sampled for twelve years. The initial stages are characterized by ruderal communities dominated by nitrophilous annual weeds. Ruderal vegetation was soon replaced by nutrient-poor communities dominated by short-lived pioneer dicotyledonous plants and grasses. In the last few years of the study, coinciding with a rainy period, the low sites were dominated by the perennial grasses, Poa angustifolia, P. pratensis and Cynodon dactylon. In contrast, in the high sites a less dense cover of perennials developed. The influence of initial composition on vegetation development decreased with time and the influence of altitude increased during succession. The altitude of the site had a significant effect on regeneration. Species richness and Shannon diversity of the high sites increased during vegetation development and that of the lowsites decreased. Most annuals persisted in the high sites but became extinct in the low sites. The mean species turnover rate, irrespective of altitude, decreased during the study. We studied the first 38-yr succession on abandoned fields in a Hungarian steppe landscape, controlling for present and past abiotic conditions, landscape context and disturbance regime. The sites chosen in the landscape appear suitable for a historically improved SFT. The results of the SFT show that the most characteristic features of the local succession are: 1. the very limited colonization of specialist species, though this landscape was expected to be a good propagule source for colonization since there are many species-rich loess grassland parches scattered in the landscape surrounding the old-fields, 2. the development of a closed, low diversity grassland dominated by perennial generalists, 3. the sharply decreasing rate of succession in 25-38-yr-old fields. The old-fields converged in floristic composition with succession. Convergence may be determined by the following factors: 1. low chances for woody species colonization (as a consequence of a poor propagule source for woody species and regular grazing), 2. dominance of Festuca and other generalists that may prevent further colonization and 3. regular sheep and cattle grazing as a homogenizing factor. Hypotheses were generated based on these results that can be used to plan local longterm experiments or observations e.g. to decide whether dispersal limitation or recruitment limitation determines the low colonization rate of specialist species observed in this landscape. Since the 25-38-yr-old fields have a very "characterless" species composition (and lack the distinctive features of loess grasslands), future restoration works will need to focus on the artificial diversification of these secondary grasslands, ii the goal is a species-rich grassland that resembles the region's ancient loess grasslands. Improved space-for-time substitution seems to be a useful tool to study local vegetation dynamics. Detailed historical reconstruction could improve the reliability of SFT studies; unfortunately, reconstruction of the history is not an easy task and the site choice is never perfect. The challenge of historical reconstruction may be one reason why SFT studies of sires with documented history are rare. Improved space-for-time substitution may also be an appropriate tool to design restoration projects. LA - English DB - MTMT ER -
