Here we report the results of a 9-year mowing experiment designed to suppress the spread of C. epigejos in mid-successional grasslands in Hungary. The experimental design consisted of 16 permanent plots of 3 × 3 m. Half of the plots were mowed twice a year (in June and September), the other half was left as control. Vegetation was sampled in 2 × 2 m quadrates before mowing in each year between 2001 and 2009. The effects of mowing were tested using repeated-measure analyses of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD for post hoc tests. Significant decrease of C. epigejos appeared after 2 years of mowing. Species richness increased after 4 years, while diversity after 8 years. By this time the target native species Brachypodium pinnatum become dominant. Similar trends appeared in the control plots during spontaneous succession but at much slower rates. Our results suggest that C. epigejos disappears spontaneously in secondary grassland succession after ca. 40-50 years. However, mowing twice a year can speed up this process by opening a "colonization window" to the valuable target species. For successful control, mowing should be maintained for approximately 8 years. © 2011 Società Botanica Italiana.}, keywords = {RESTORATION; Biodiversity; Spontaneous succession; Secondary meadow steppe; Forest-steppe zone; Abandoned vineyards}, year = {2011}, eissn = {1724-5575}, pages = {699-707}, orcid-numbers = {Bartha, Sándor/0000-0001-6331-7521} } @article{MTMT:1386410, title = {Lucerne-dominated fields recover native grass diversity without intensive management actions}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1386410}, author = {Török, Péter and Kelemen, András and Valkó, Orsolya and Deák, Balázs and Lukács, Balázs András and Tóthmérész, Béla}, doi = {10.1111/j.1365-2664.2010.01903.x}, journal-iso = {J APPL ECOL}, journal = {JOURNAL OF APPLIED ECOLOGY}, volume = {48}, unique-id = {1386410}, issn = {0021-8901}, year = {2011}, eissn = {1365-2664}, pages = {257-264}, orcid-numbers = {Valkó, Orsolya/0000-0001-7919-6293; Deák, Balázs/0000-0001-6938-1997} } @article{MTMT:1278464, title = {Restoration potential in seed banks of acidic fen and dry-msophilous meadows: Can restoration be based on local seed banks}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1278464}, author = {Valkó, Orsolya and Török, Péter and Tóthmérész, Béla and Matus, Gábor}, doi = {10.1111/j.1526-100X.2010.00679.x}, journal-iso = {RESTOR ECOL}, journal = {RESTORATION ECOLOGY}, volume = {19}, unique-id = {1278464}, issn = {1061-2971}, year = {2011}, eissn = {1526-100X}, pages = {9-15}, orcid-numbers = {Valkó, Orsolya/0000-0001-7919-6293} } @article{MTMT:1251511, title = {Convergent evolution of seed dispersal by ants, and phylogeny and biogeography in flowering plants: a global survey}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1251511}, author = {Lengyel, Szabolcs and Gove, AD and Latimer, AM and Majer, JD and Dunn, RR}, doi = {10.1016/j.ppees.2009.08.001}, journal-iso = {PERSPECT PLANT ECOL}, journal = {PERSPECTIVES IN PLANT ECOLOGY EVOLUTION AND SYSTEMATICS}, volume = {12}, unique-id = {1251511}, issn = {1433-8319}, abstract = {Seed dispersal is a fundamental life history trait in plants. Although the recent surge of interest in seed dispersal by ants (myrmecochory) has added greatly to knowledge on the ecology of seed dispersal and ant-plant mutualisms, myrmecochory also represents a unique opportunity to examine the links between seed dispersal and evolution in flowering plants. Here we review the taxonomic, phylogenetic and biogeographic distribution of myrmecochory in flowering plants. Myrmecochory is mediated by elaiosomes, i.e., lipid-rich seed appendages that attract ants and serve as rewards for dispersal. We surveyed the literature for evidence of elaiosomes in angiosperm plants to estimate the global prevalence of myrmecochory. We then searched the literature for phylogenetic reconstructions to identify myrmecochorous lineages and to estimate the minimum number of independent evolutionary origins of myrmecochory. We found that myrmecochory is present in at least 11 000 species or 4.5% of all species, in 334 genera or 2.5% of all genera and in 77 families or 17% of all families of angiosperm plants. We identified at least 101, but possibly up to 147, independent origins of myrmecochory. We estimated three or more origins in 13 families and found that at least half the genera are myrmecochorous in 10 families. Most myrmecochorous lineages were Australian, South African or northern temperate (Holarctic). A mapping of families containing myrmecochorous genera on a dated angiosperm supertree showed that myrmecochory has evolved in most of the major angiosperm lineages and that it is more frequent in younger families (crown group age < 80 million years) than in older ones. We suggest that the relatively low physiological and energetic costs of producing an elaiosome and the consistent selective benefits of myrmecochory (dispersal, protection from seed predators and fire, safe and nutrient-rich microsites) explain the numerous evolutionary and developmental origins of myrmecochory in angiosperm plants, and we propose that elaiosomes thus provide one of the most dramatic examples of convergent evolution in biology.}, year = {2010}, eissn = {1433-8319}, pages = {43-55}, orcid-numbers = {Lengyel, Szabolcs/0000-0002-7049-0100} } @article{MTMT:1268431, title = {Restoring grassland biodiversity: sowing low-diversity seed mixtures can lead to rapid favourable changes}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1268431}, author = {Török, Péter and Deák, Balázs and Vida, E and Valkó, Orsolya and Lengyel, Szabolcs and Tóthmérész, Béla}, doi = {10.1016/j.biocon.2009.12.024}, journal-iso = {BIOL CONSERV}, journal = {BIOLOGICAL CONSERVATION}, volume = {143}, unique-id = {1268431}, issn = {0006-3207}, year = {2010}, eissn = {1873-2917}, pages = {806-812}, orcid-numbers = {Deák, Balázs/0000-0001-6938-1997; Valkó, Orsolya/0000-0001-7919-6293; Lengyel, Szabolcs/0000-0002-7049-0100} } @article{MTMT:1189751, title = {Seed bank and vegetation development of sandy grasslands after goose breeding}, url = {https://m2.mtmt.hu/api/publication/1189751}, author = {Török, Péter and Matus, Gábor and Papp, Mária and Tóthmérész, Béla}, doi = {10.1007/s12224-009-9027-z}, journal-iso = {FOLIA GEOBOT}, journal = {FOLIA GEOBOTANICA}, volume = {44}, unique-id = {1189751}, issn = {1211-9520}, abstract = {Four hypotheses were tested using long-term observations of vegetation development (12 years) and present-day seed bank data in a sandy grassland area overgrazed by domestic geese: i) Gap regeneration is crucial in maintaining species richness; thus, closed vegetation of the lower sites prevents continuous establishment of short-lived species. ii) Short-lived, early successional species comprise most of the seed banks and late successional perennials have at most sparse seed banks. iii) Composition of seed banks is more similar to pioneer vegetation than to later successional stages. iv) The similarity is higher between vegetation and seed banks in the upper-positioned plots than in the closed, lower-positioned ones. Two sites, located in the upper part of dune slopes, and another two, positioned on the lower part, were studied. In each site five 2×2 m permanent plots were surveyed between 1991 and 2002. Percentage cover was estimated three times a year. In the last study year, soil seed banks were sampled. Two vertical segments (0–5, 5–10 cm) were separately analyzed. The seedling emergence method was applied on concentrated samples. We found that the vegetation developed from open, annual dominated weedy assemblages to grasslands dominated by perennial graminoids. In the lowerpositioned sites perennial clonal grasses (Cynodon dactylon, Poa angustifolia and P. pratensis) formed more closed vegetation, which was accompanied by lower species richness compared to the upper-positioned sites. Seed density varied between 10,300 and 40,900 seeds/m2. Significantly higher seed densities were found in upper sites than in the lower ones. Annuals and short-lived perennial dicots comprised most of the seed bank.
