In these protocols, packet forwarding to the base station (BS) takes place in a multi-hop manner by randomly selecting the target node for transmission. The probability distribution of the target selection is optimized to achieve minimal energy consumption subject to the constraints of keeping the packet delay and packet loss under given levels. In this way, the lifespan of WSN can be significantly increased in comparison to the single hop transmission to the base station (BS) or to the chain protocol (in which the nodes convey information to the BS by handing over packets to their nearest neighbor). The increase in life span achieved by the new protocols is instrumental in applications where recharging the nodes is out of reach (e.g. military field observations, living habitat monitoring, or health care systems) but reliable communication is still to be maintained.
