AB - Nowadays, terrestrial laser scanning of historic buildings provides new geometric data that may supplement or even overwrite the information found in the traditional literature on the topic. This article presents a laser-scanning-based, geometric typology of the connection between the rib system and webbing of Late Gothic net vaults and discusses the underlying building techniques. The article provides not only geometric descriptions but also 12 vaults as case studies to illustrate the different groups and to highlight how the base theoretical outcomes may vary due to the unique building features. After showcasing the typology and the case studies, we discuss the further implications of these results and how they may prove useful for structural analysis or studying the interconnections and genealogy of these buildings. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd LA - English DB - MTMT ER - TY - JOUR AU - Jobbik, Eszter AU - Krähling, János TI - A Methodological Approach and Geometry-Based Typology of Late-Gothic Net Vaults’ Rib Systems. Nonetheless, the most influential works on this subject were authored in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries—long after these structures were constructed. During this period, the accuracy of the available survey techniques limited the knowledge about these vaults’ exact geometry. Nowadays, terrestrial laser scanning allows us to gather never-before-evaluated data about them. In this article, we present a new geometry-based typology of Late Gothic net vaults’ rib systems – based on written sources and our own case studies – which challenges some premises of the literature. The typology is accompanied by a thorough explanation of our methodology for geometric analysis. We also accentuate our views on the crucial role of geometric analysis in studying building connections and genealogy. © The Author(s) 2024. The literature refers to the genealogic connection between the two since both are masonry ribbed vaults of the same rib pattern from the former Saxon area of Transylvania, where the guild of Sighişoara supposedly worked. Our research highlights the similarities and differences in the fine details of their geometry and construction techniques, thus providing a stronger basis to draw conclusions about lineage routes and guilds. © (2023), (Brukenthal National Museum). II. 82, Muegyetem rkp. 3, Hungary; email: eszter.jobbik@gmail.com AB - In the present article, we revisit the question of the structural characteristics and building methods of two of the most famous Hungarian Late-Gothic net vaults, the nave vault of the Franciscan Church of Szeged-Alsóváros and the vault of the Reformed Church of Nyírbátor. Based on the data gathered by laser-scanning the two buildings, the geometric system of the two vaults, as opposed to the former state of research, differ significantly from each other. While the rib system and webbing of the vault of Szeged-Alsóváros have features characteristic of pseudo-ribbed net vaults and net vaults with webbing built with formwork, the vault of Nyírbátor is likely a real net vault structure with webbing built freehand. Furthermore, the rib system of the vault of Szeged-Alsóváros can be described by a single curved surface deductible from a circle segment, the rib junction points’ spatial positions in the vault of Nyírbátor are only describable by coordinates in the three directions of the space, not by an even surface. Based on the geometric descriptions, we also attempted to reconstruct the plausible building methods in both cases. Finally, we considered the results of the geometric analysis and the underlying construction ideas deduced from it and gave a new evaluation regarding the earlier reasonings for the strong building connections of the two churches in regard to the guilds and master builders. In our present article, we aimed to supplement the information known about the vaults by providing exact geometric data gathered via laser scanning. Based on this data, we attempted to filter out common characteristics of the individual vaults, regarding the geometry of their ribs, their webs and the positions of their keystones. As a result, we proved that the cross vaults composing the system cannot be hallmarked as the remains of a given building period, and even within a given cross vault, more building periods can appear. Combining the results of the different geometric analyses, we concluded six distinct scenarios concerning the relative periodisation of the elements composing the cross-vault system, complemented by the evaluation of these. Thus, in the present article, we give an example of how to use point cloud-based building survey techniques to approach the questions of a given building’s relative periodisations. Our analysis concerned the global geometry of the rib network, as well as the webbing. During the study of the rib system, we reconstructed a probable construction method of the late 15th – early 16th-century vault, which seems to be a self-contained construction system in regard to the rib system's plan, the height of the junction points and the curvature of the individual ribs. We found, that to the latter the widely known "Prinzipalbogen" theory applies, however, the "theory of the longest route", which is often mentioned together with the former, most likely was not used. Mapping the webbing and the ribs allowed us to examine the building technique of the webs too. Through this analysis, we proved that the webbing of the vault was built on the ribs as opposed to being a structurally separated barrel vault. Beyond that, we found that the construction of the analysed ribbed net vault was a unique, spot-specific method, as an answer to the church’s former building periods. We also reconstructed the construction and building process of this vault. The written sources about this vault are very limited, however, the point cloud-based research could provide new details about the history of the building, along with the formerly used building techniques. For the analysis, we worked based on our three-step analysis process, established for net vaults. During the studying of the rib system, we reconstructed the probable original construction and building method, as well as the temporary supporting structures of the early 16 th -century vault. The analysis of the individual ribs led us to conclusions about this vault, in the mirror of the widespread ideas of the topic’s technical literature, such as the “Prinzipalbogen” theory (all the ribs of a given net vault have the same curvature), or the principle of the longest route (the cumulated length of the ribs’ plan, which led from the impost to the crown with the longest possible route equals to the radius of the ribs’ curvature). Regarding the curvilinear rib elements, we presumed a likely fabrication method, based on contemporary research results. Mapping the webbing and the ribs, we concluded their building order, as well as the plausible masonry technique of the webs. LA - English DB - MTMT ER -
