Saponins are a diverse group of compounds (triterpenoid and steroid glycosides), widely distributed, and characterized by their structures, which differ in the number of sugar units linked in various positions. Saponins have emerged as commercially significant compounds with expanding applications in food, cosmetics, and other pharmaceutical applications as a result of consumer demand for their surfactant properties and have received significant attention due to their biological activities (such as anticancer, antimicrobial, antiprotozoal, delivery adjuvant, anticholesterol, and anti-inflammatory properties). To overcome the processing difficulties given by their complexity, new methods for their extraction and purification strategies must be developed in order to realize their full commercial potential. More attention must be paid to this group of metabolites because many of the active mechanisms are still unknown, and plant-derived saponins have great potential for replacing toxic synthetic or animal-derived surfactants in a wide range of modern commercial products. This review provides an update on the sources, structures, and pharmaceutical applications of phytosaponins and discusses the prospects and challenges of future saponin-based formulations or products.

Taxodium hybrid 'zhongshanshan' is a valuable bottomland timber tree species with both ecological and economic significance. However, the lack of an efficient propagation method has hindered large-scale reproduction of superior clones. In this study, we aimed to establish an effective propagation system by investigating somatic embryogenesis (SE) of T. hybrid 'zhongshanshan'. The results demonstrated successful induction of embryogenic calli through treatment of immature embryos with 2 mg L-1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 0.5 mg L-1 6-Benzylaminopurine (6-BA) and 30 g L-1 maltose. Furthermore, the combination of 190 g L(-1 )polyethylene glycol (PEG) and 8 mg L-1 abscisic acid (ABA) exhibited a positive impact on somatic embryo induction and maturation. The embryogenic callus of T. hybrid 'zhongshanshan' exhibited a distinct embryonal-suspensor mass structure, ultimately developing into somatic embryos. In addition, we observed that endogenous hormones affected the whole process of somatic embryogenesis. Indoleacetic acid (IAA), Gibberellic acid (GA) and Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) displayed elevated levels during the initial stages and cotyledonary embryos stage, while cytokinin (CTK) and salicylic acid (SA) contents declined throughout SE. The ABA content exhibited a steady increase throughout the SE process. These findings represented a critical technical basis for the efficient propagation of T. hybrid 'zhongshanshan', which also provided a good foundation for investigating SE in other conifer species.

As seed precursors, ovules are fundamental organs during the plant life cycle. Decades of morphological and molecular study have allowed for the elucidation of the complex and intricate genetic network regulating ovule development. Ovule and seed number is highly dependent on the number of ovule primordia that are determined from the placenta during early pistil development. Ovule initiation is positively regulated by the plant hormones auxins, cytokinins, and brassinosteroids, as well as negatively regulated by gibberellins. Each hormone does not act independently; multiple points of hormonal crosstalk occur to coordinately regulate ovule primordia initiation. In this review, we highlight the roles of these hormones and their interactions in the genetic and hormonal network co-regulating ovule initiation in Arabidopsis.

Jasmonic Acid (JA), Salicylic Acid (SA) and its derivatives are important phytohormones that play fundamental roles in the plant defence mechanisms against various biotic and abiotic stresses. These hormones are essential in enabling plants to respond and adapt to challenging environmental conditions. They serve as key players in various plant signalling pathways and exhibit both antagonistic and synergistic effects on each other. JA primarily functions in defence against pathogenic organisms and herbivores, while SA plays a crucial role in combating biotrophic pathogens. Apart from biotic stresses, studies have shown that the application of JA and SA can enhance the resistance of pulses to abiotic stresses such as drought, temperature extremes, metal toxicity, and salt stress, which could be achieved through the regulation of specific gene expression. Under such conditions, the magnitude of JA and SA is regulated through a complex signalling system, which includes coordinated actions of transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of enzymes, as well as modification of key proteins by other molecules. The WRKY70 transcription factor (TF) plays a significant role in the post-transcriptional regulation and modulation of genes such as NPR1, VSP1 VSP2, PR2, and PR10, which are associated with stimulating the plant defence response in the pulse crops. The regulation of JA and SA signalling pathways in pulse crops under stress conditions is complex, requiring a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Therefore, developing well-organized strategies for the exogenous application of JA/SA and its derivatives in pulses becomes crucial in mitigating the impact of these stresses. This paper sheds light on the recent understanding on mechanism and application of JA/SA, which could help in improving the resilience and defence mechanisms of pulse crops, leading to better stress tolerance and overall crop productivity.
