The authors invented a method and built a special tribometer for pressure-assisted lubrication. This approach reduces friction in sheet metal forming processes compared to conventional lubrication. Moreover, the artificial neural network approach combined with a force-directed Fruchterman-Reingold graph algorithm and Spearman’s correlation was used for the first time to analyse the relationships between the friction process parameters and the output parameters (the coefficient of friction and the resulting surface roughness of the sheet metal). The experimental tests were conducted utilising strip drawing on four grades of steel sheets known to be outstanding for deep-drawing quality. Different oils, oil pressures and contact pressures were used. Artificial neural network models were used for the first time to determine these relationships in a strip drawing test where every parameter is represented by one node, and all nodes are connected by edges with each other. R Software version 4.2.3 was used to construct the network using the ‘qgraph’ and ‘networktools’ packages. It was found that friction conditions had a highly significant negative correlation with coefficient of friction (COF) and a moderately significant negative correlation with the final surface roughness. However, the initial surface roughness of the as-received sheets had a negative correlation with the COF and a positive one with the resulting surface roughness of the sheet metal. The parameters most related to the COF are the strength coefficient, the ultimate tensile strength and the friction conditions (dry friction or pressurised lubrication). Spearman’s correlation coefficients showed a strong correlation between the kinematic viscosity and the friction conditions. © The Author(s) 2024. In this paper, we present an approach for the energy-efficiency optimization of a 3-DOF parallel robot. The proposed strategy leverages the task placement, the execution time, and the length of the robot lower arms to minimize the energy consumption for the execution of a predefined high-speed pick-and-place operation. To evaluate the actuators energy consumption, the kinematic, dynamic and electro-mechanic mathematical models, as well as an equivalent multibody model, of the parallel robot are implemented. The results of extensive numerical simulations show that the proposed strategy provides notable improvements in the energy efficiency of the parallel robot, with respect to alternative approaches. Starting from a pick-and-place task with optimal task placement with a consumption of 38.2 J (with a cycle time of 0.4 s), the energy expenditure can be reduced to 3.75 J (with a cycle time of 1.86 s), with a reduction percentage of 90.2%, by additionally optimizing the execution time, and the length of the robot lower arms. These results lead to a reduction from 5733 J/min (for 150 cycles/min) to 121 J/min (for 32 cycles/min), allowing to choose the best trade-off between robot productivity and consumed energy. The effect of different welding parameters on joint strength and fracture surfaces was investigated, and the optimal welding parameters were determined using the Taguchi method. Results revealed that low heat generation led to weak mechanical interlocking between GFRP and the thermoplastic interlayer, while high heat generation caused degradation of the aluminum/thermoplastic polymer interface. The tool traverse speed was found to be the most influential parameter in terms of joint strength, followed by plunge depth and rotational speed. Moreover, thermal measurements were conducted during the welding process using thermocouples. An uneven thermal distribution was discovered across the overlap area due to dissimilar substrates. This issue was resolved by incorporating aluminum thermal insulation, resulting in improved heat distribution and a significant enhancement of 94% in joint strength. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to identify joining mechanisms and examine the effect of welding parameters on joint microstructure. Furthermore, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to investigate chemical bond formation at the aluminum/thermoplastic polymer interface. The results showed that the joining mechanisms involved mechanical interlocking between the thermoplastic interlayer and aluminum, as well as chemical bonding, penetration, and intertwining between the thermoplastic interlayer and the thermoset composite. Corrosion characteristic of HEAs prepared via spark plasma sintering is a top notch as the technique generates corrosion resistant phases and homogenous microstructure. This study was aimed at reviewing recent publications on corrosion characteristics of HEAs processed by SPS in order to develop ways of improving their anti-corrosion properties. The resource materials were obtained from Scopus-indexed journals and Google Scholar websites of peer-reviewed articles published within the last 5 years. From the study, it was revealed that incorporation of some elements (Al, Cr, Ti) into HEAs can improve their corrosion resistance, while addition of some others can reduce their brittleness and enhance their stability and formability. It was recommended that optimization of SPS parameters was one of the strategies of generating better corrosion characteristics in HEAs.
