REVIEWEDtruefalse10007128false10007128true1439-01081614-7480JournalFOREIGN132023Purpose The rapid development of industry, mining, and agriculture in recent years has led to heavy metal enrichment in the soil in the Dan River Basin, which has greatly threatened the land quality in this area. However, little is known regarding the sources and risks of soil heavy metal pollution in the Dan River Basin.Materials and methods This study conducted high-density soil sampling in the Dan River Basin. The sources and potential risks of soil heavy metals to human health were investigated through the use of fuzzy synthetic evaluation (FSE), index evaluation, spatial analysis, the absolute principal component scores multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model, and the health risk assessment model. Results and discussion The variation coefficients of heavy metals are relatively high. The monitoring results indicated the study area to be slightly to moderately polluted, with contamination concentrated in the south and parts of the east and west. It needs to bring a high attention to Ni and Cr pollution caused by excessive content and Cd pollution caused by its high toxicity. Soil heavy metals posed a low level of comprehensive ecological risk. The sources of soil heavy metals could be placed into two categories: (1) Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, and Cd mainly originated from industry and agriculture; (2) Pb and Hg could be attributed to transportation and mining. Ingestion represented the main route that topsoil heavy metals enter the body. While the risk of ingestion was high for both adults and children, the latter were at higher risk. Risks to adults and non-carcinogenic risks to children were negligible, whereas the carcinogenic risks posed by heavy metals to children are higher. Conclusions The concentration of heavy metals in soil in the study area was influenced by anthropogenic activities. Heavy metal pollution could be mainly attributed to Ni and Cr. Cd posed a moderate to considerable ecological risk in most areas. More attention is needed on the carcinogenic risk to children by Cr produced through manufacturing. This study provides information for regional soil pollution source apportionment and can guide efforts to mitigate pollution and protect human health.2023truetruetruefalsefalseNONE2023-12-31false00000000000011Q1falsefalsefalsefalse115080trueLanguage10002

REVIEWEDtruefalse10007128false10007128true1439-01081614-7480JournalFOREIGN122023PurposeEstimating the joint probability of occurrence and joint return period of suspended sediment load (SSL) is necessary for the design and operation of hydraulic structures. The amount of SSL is closely related to the amount of runoff, which is highly dependent on the amount of rainfall. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to estimate the joint probability of occurrence and the joint return period of SSL values given rainfall and river discharge values.MethodsThe vine copula family was used in this study to trivariate frequency analyses of SSL associated with rainfall and stream flow in Allah Basin, Iran. We used daily data of 140 events recorded at Jokanak station during 1975-2020. To create the probabilistic model, the structures of D-vine, C-vine, and R-vine copula functions, as well as rotational, Gaussian, and independent modes, were examined based on log-likelihood, AIC, and BIC criteria.ResultsThe results of examining the marginal distributions showed that the generalized Pareto (RMSE=3.91, NSE=0.98, MAPE=3.91), log-normal (RMSE=2.69, NSE=0.99, MAPE=7.69), and GEV (RMSE=2.16, NSE=0.99, MAPE=5.43) are the best-fitted distributions on rainfall, river flow, and SSL data, respectively. By examining the various vine structures, the D-vine was chosen as a suitable copula (AIC=-727.8, BIC=-714.3, and log-likelihood=366.9) for modeling the dependency structure among rainfall (R), river flow (Q), and SSL. Examining the tree structure of considered copulas revealed that the D-vine copula maintains the dependency of the pairs of variables by selecting the best edges until the last tree. Frank and Clayton's 180-degree copulas were chosen as the best internal copula functions. The conditional return period of suspended sediment load in the study area was calculated and presented as contour curves based on rainfall and corresponding discharge. The return period provided is given by the occurrence of runoff and rainfall values. Compared to the univariate method, the presented return period includes a range of data. For example, in the 2-year return period, changes in SSL values provide a range of 0.46 to 1,395,579 tons per day, given the corresponding rainfall and runoff values with probabilities of 0.0031 to 0.50.ConclusionsUsing this model, SSL values can be estimated by having the amounts of rainfall and river flow at different probability levels. The results showed that using the rotated copulas can describe the correlation in all directions, and therefore provide more reliable results.2023truetruetruefalsefalseNONE2023-11-17false00000000000011Q1falsefalsefalsefalse114050trueLanguage10002

REVIEWEDtruefalse10007128false10007128true1439-01081614-7480JournalFOREIGN152023PurposeCover crops have been used as an effective soil management practice to enhance soil health. However, this practice may create connected soil pore networks that can cause preferential transport of contaminants to the groundwater or surface water via subsurface flow pathways. The main objective of this study was to compare the effect of cover crops on the soil macropore characteristics in the soil profile.MethodsThe study was conducted on soil columns collected from E.V. Smith Research Center, Shorter, AL, USA. This study evaluated the influence of cover crop (CC) vs. no cover crop (NC) on soil pore characteristics in strip-tillage cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). The cover crop treatment consisted of a mixture of cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) and crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.). Six replicated intact undisturbed soil cores (150 mm diameter and 500 mm deep) were collected for the column study from each treatment class, i.e., CC and NC, and subjected to non-invasive X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning, giving 0.35-mm-resolution images. The high-resolution images were analyzed in ImageJ to determine all the soil pore characteristics. Results and discussionThe results of the comparison of pore characteristics as a function of treatments showed that soil columns under CC had comparatively higher values of porosity and pore number density for the top 100 mm of soil. Pore geometry metrics such as tortuosity did not show significant differences among the treatments (CC vs NC). Connection probability was significantly higher for CC in the subsurface depth class (200-400 mm). Significant correlations were also observed between CT-derived pore characteristics and root characteristics from which it can be inferred that cover crop roots influenced the X-ray CT-derived pore properties.ConclusionsCover cropping significantly impacted the macropore properties of the strip-till cotton field. This was attributed primarily to the influence of root networks on macropores. Our study's correlations between root properties and macropore characteristics also indicated that larger root volumes were significantly correlated with complex and irregularly shaped macropores. These variables are critical for a better understanding of the flow dynamics of contaminants through the soil profile and for developing appropriate management strategies.2023truetruetruefalsefalseNONE2023-11-14false00000000000011Q1falsefalsefalsefalse16070trueLanguage10002

REVIEWEDtruefalse10007128false10007128true1439-01081614-7480JournalFOREIGN152023PurposeThe purpose of this study was to investigate how changes in substrate availability (stimulating root exudate input) affect the temperature response (Q(10)) of soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization across different soil profiles to increase our ability to predict the response of soil organic matter dynamics to climate change.Materials and methodsWe sampled the topsoil and subsoil of two typical mineral soil profiles and one buried soil profile. Soils were incubated at 10-25 & DEG;C at 0.75 & DEG;C intervals, SOC mineralization rates were continuously measured with and without glucose addition, and Q(10) was calculated. Results and discussionOur results showed that Q(10) decreased with increasing depth in typical mineral soils, but decreased before increasing with depth in buried soil. As expected, substrate addition significantly increased Q(10) across soil depths; however, the magnitude of this increase (& UDelta;Q(10)) differed with soil depth and type. Unexpectedly, in typical mineral soils, & UDelta;Q(10) was higher in topsoil than in subsoils, and vice versa for buried soil. & UDelta;Q(10) was negatively correlated with initial soil substrate availability (CAI) and positively correlated with soil inorganic N.ConclusionsOverall, our results suggested that increased substrate availability under climate change scenarios (i.e., increased root exudates with elevated CO2 concentrations) could further strengthen the temperature response of SOC mineralization, especially in soils with high inorganic N content or regions with high N deposition rates.2023truetruetruefalsefalseNONE2023-11-29false00000000000011Q1falsefalsefalsefalse17070trueLanguage10002

REVIEWEDtruefalse10007128false10007128true1439-01081614-7480JournalFOREIGN102023PurposeMangrove ecosystems which play a critical role in global C sequestration have recently become threatened by global warming and sea level rise. This study aimed to explore the responses of SOC mineralization and C pool stability in mangrove ecosystems to warming and flooding conditions.MethodsLaboratory incubation and solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR) analysis were used to evaluated soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization and stability under warming (ST), flooding (SW), warming in coincidence with flooding (SWT), and soil under normal temperature taken from a subtropical mangrove ecosystem in southeastern China.ResultsThe cumulative SOC mineralization of ST increased by 24%, while SWT and SW decreased by 59% and 68% relative to CK, respectively. Furthermore, the 13C-NMR analysis showed that O-alkyl C was the dominant SOC chemical composition in all treatments (37.1-43.1%), followed by the aromatic C and alkyl C. The aromaticity index (AI) decreased, and the ratio of alkyl and O-alkyl to aromatic (Alip/Arom) increased in all treatments compared with CK, while the alkyl C/O-alkyl C ratio (A/O-A) and hydrophobicity index (HI) were higher for ST and SW but lower for SWT. Warming significantly facilitated SOC mineralization, and lowered SOC stability due to the high cumulative CO2-C production, while flooding had the opposite effects. However, warming in coincidence with flooding led to low SOC decomposition and a more recalcitrant substance.ConclusionThe theoretical elevated CO2 release from mangrove soils under warming in coastal zones might be partially offset by prolonged flooding. The different effects on the chemical fractions, chemical compositions, and stability of the SOC pool in mangrove soil under warming and flooding might further complicate the research on coastal carbon sinks.2023truetruetruefalsefalseNONE2023-11-29false00000000000011Q1falsefalsefalsefalse17040trueLanguage10002

/api/journal/10007128
REVIEWEDtruefalse10007128false10007128true1439-01081614-7480JournalFOREIGN112023IntroductionHigh water levels are usually maintained in natural lakes and reservoirs for intensive utilization of water resources. The biological and sediment properties of lakeside zones deteriorate due to manual adjustments to water levels. In recent years, lake water levels have frequently been reduced to expose sediments to sunlight and air ("sunbathing") to restore the ecological functions of lakeside. In Lake Chao, China, this method has been carried out over the years. This study aims to investigate the impact of the sunbathing method on the sediment on the Lake Chao lakeside.Materials and methodsThis study was conducted on the lakeside sediments of Lake Chao. Through field investigations, sampling, and laboratory testing, the changes in the physicochemical properties of sediments via sunbathing were investigated. In addition, laboratory experiments on phosphorus release from undisturbed sediment samples were undertaken. Field sediment columns were also collected for laboratory static phosphorus release experiments to analyze changes in phosphorus release from the sediment after sunbathing. Results and discussionThe results illustrate the advantages of sunbathing in suppressing phosphorus release, reducing organic matter content, and accelerating the consolidation of exposed sediments. However, phosphorus from decomposed algae, washed up on the shores during algal blooms and decomposed during sunbathing of shore sediments, resulted in the introduction of considerable amounts of nutrients, including phosphorus, to the water body.ConclusionsIn general, sunbathing could reduce the release of phosphorus from lakeside sediments, but in areas where algal blooms frequently occur, the potential risk of nutrient release caused by algae accumulation needs to be considered.2023truetruetruefalsefalseNONE2023-11-11false00000000000011Q1falsefalsefalsefalse17070trueLanguage10002

REVIEWEDtruefalse10007128false10007128true1439-01081614-7480JournalFOREIGN152023PurposeBeichuan River is a primary tributary of Huangshui River and a secondary tributary of Yellow River. However, the soil in the watershed has been polluted due to decades of agricultural and urbanization development. Effective pollution investigation and source control of the Beichuan River basin is the key to soil conservation. In this study, the spatial distribution and physical and chemical properties of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in soil of Beichuan River basin were studied for the potential ecological risks and source apportionment. The results can provide guidance for the environmental protection of Beichuan River and can also provide technical support for the contamination of similar river basins.Materials and methodsThe contents and ecological risk of nine PTMs (Cr, Hg, As, Pb, Ni, Cd, Co, Cu, and Zn) in 37 surface soil samples were investigated with several evaluation methods (geo-accumulation index, potential ecological risk index, and toxic risk index). The fraction species of soil samples were treated by Tessier sequential extraction. The potential sources of the nine PTMs were explored with a combination of Pearson's correlation coefficient, geostatistics, and source analysis method. Results and discussionFour potential contamination source were identified in the study area: (1) industrial source of chemical industry and smelting industry related to coal combustion; (2) traffic emission and atmosphere deposition; (3) agricultural activities, which included fertilizers, pesticides and livestock manure; and (4) the natural source. The source apportionment indicated that the non-point source contamination in agriculture has an obvious influence on the PTMs in the Basin. The risk assessment demonstrated that the Cd and Cr were the heavy metal with serious pollution. The fingerprinting of the PTMs and physicochemical property in soil can be analyzed to two cluster, with the different physical and chemical properties and the contamination.ConclusionsThe risk assessment results and the source apportionment indicated that PTM contamination occurred in the southeast and northwest of the study region. The results can help distinguish the sources of the contamination, which will achieve the regional contamination control and ecological protection of soil in extreme weather areas of the plateau. Meanwhile, this study has a guiding significance for the high-quality development of the Yellow River.2023truetruetruefalsefalseNONE2023-11-11false00000000000011Q1falsefalsefalsefalse231070trueLanguage10002

REVIEWEDtruefalse10007128false10007128true1439-01081614-7480JournalFOREIGN222023PurposeAs documented by multiple studies, the construction of artificial reservoirs influences fluvial processes. The hydrographic barrier causes a water regime change, and the effects are evident in the accumulation of sediment in the reservoir as well as the intensification of the erosion process below the dam due to the lack of sediments for transport in the river. Moreover, the use of lateral canals on the reservoirs causes additional transformations of the river system, excluding the river part below the dam from the natural system of the catchment area. This research aimed to determine the impact of the creation and functioning of the Koronowo Reservoir dam on the Brda River and its lateral canal on the continuum of sediment transport, with particular emphasis on suspended sediment.MethodsThe research was based on analysing the available hydrological data and the measurements of suspended sediment concentration during the water flushing maintenance works into the Brda River channel. In addition, a set of morphometric indices obtained through dedicated terrain analysis were necessary to understand the area's morphodynamics and sediment sources. The suspended sediment concentration (SSC), suspended sediment volume concentration (SVC), and Sauter mean diameter (SMD) data were measured by a LISST-25X, and spatial data were obtained through the System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses (SAGA GIS) software. Results and conclusionThe results were combined with the Connectivity Index evaluation as well as field surveys and made it possible to identify new sources of material supply to the Brda catchment below the dam, thus identifying a disturbance in the sediment transport continuum in the catchment area. Research is a critical element in sustainable sediment management in the catchment, using a controlled sediment flushing operation and identifying local new sources of sediment supply.2023truetruetruefalsefalseNONE2023-11-09false00000000000022Q1falsefalsefalsefalse2023-10-25T12:12:13.341+0000426030trueLanguage10002
