AB  - The methods of narrative cartography are effectively used in geography education and also in the integrated education of other subjects. In this field, and in science communication in general,  this method represents an alternative approach,  in which spatial narratives,  story maps or visual storytelling serve transdisciplinary purposes in order to shape a sustainable future of society. To take advantage of the opportunities available to everyone with information and communication technologies  (ICT)  education at school,  it is worth getting to know the fundamentals of storytelling design. In this paper, for the first time in Hungarian, we present the historical antecedents of the method, the examples show the presence of the  'mapping impulse'  as a  cognitive method already in ancient times.  The understanding of maps as temporal snapshots, showing simultaneity levels and states,  appears in the science of the  European  Enlightenment.  In addition to grid maps,  there are narrative examples throughout modern times,  but  'story maps' have become a theoretical trend in the 21st century with the possibilities of computer animation.  Next,  we summarize the characteristics,  basic structures and genres of cartographic storytelling, based on international professional literature. We recommend using the complex learning-organization methods of storytelling in everyday practice, especially in geography education. We emphasize the user's role in the visualization processes, therefore design is crucial and visual literacy, and critical map reading competencies must be developed in geographic education.
