Recent studies demonstrated associations between physical environment (especially greenery) and people's health, well-being, and crime rate by using street-level imagery as 'big data' and automated image recognition methods. However, few prior studies focused on interrelations between physical environment and residents' social relationships. This study investigated associations between physical environments and psychological tendencies of neighboring communities in Japan by using a mail survey and Google Street View images. The mail survey was collected from 156 regions across eight prefectures in western Japan. Google Street View images of these regions were collected and classified by machine learning models and human observers. The results indicated mainly negative correlations between the survey items related to feelings towards participants' neighbors such as social capital and the rate of outdoor gardening by region. Additionally, these correlation patterns differed by type of community, namely, fishing, farming, and other types of communities.

The dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) is associated with novelty-seeking and risk-taking behaviors that have had an adaptive value in the history of human migration. It also plays a role in moderating the extent to which people adhere to cultural norms and practices. The aim of this study was to replicate previous findings about how DRD4 polymorphism interacts with cultural differences in social orientation, which revealed Westerners' emphasis on independence and East Asians' emphasis on interdependence. Testing Japanese and European Canadian undergraduates (n = 784), we succeeded in replicating these previous findings: the Canadian students were more independent, whereas the Japanese students were more interdependent. However, none of the interaction effects between culture and DRD4 were significant. Implications for candidate gene research investigating gene-environment and gene-culture interactions are discussed.

It has been suggested that social withdrawal (NEET/Hikikomori behaviour) occurs as a result of an individual???s difficulty to adapt to social norms and pressures within given cultures (marginalisation), and is present in collectivistic cultures with high social pressures and expectations. Since most of the NEET/Hikikomori studies have been conducted in Japan, we examine its applicability in Singapore with the NEET/Hikikomori Risk scale. We collected data from university students, and were able to confirm its convergent validity. To better understand its social and psychological context, we conducted an exploratory analysis to find associations with perceived deficits in social relationships, self-esteem and competence, as well as personality, anxiety, depression, and cultural self-construal. Consistent with previous findings in Japan, the evidence supports the risks of NEET/Hikikomori tendencies in Singapore as concurrent with cultural marginalisation, perceived social rejection and low views of self.

The progressive interest in studying the negative effects on brain physiology and structure produced by Adverse Experiences during Childhood (AE), has led to the analysis of psychophysiological records by means of Electroencephalography (EEG) in resting states. Therefore, the objective of this study allowed a systematic review based on the PRISMA methodology to identify the research carried out in the last 30 years. Four databases were used for this purpose: Scopus, PubMed, EBSCO and Redalyc; and two lists of terms referring to the types of EANs prevalent in Colombia and to the EEG at rest. Initially 21,556 articles were found that had the search terms, 21,545 studies were excluded that did not meet the criteria, and finally 11 full text articles were selected. Results suggest that right frontal alpha band activity α predicts greater emotional response to negative stimuli, and greater likelihood of presenting affective problems; contrary to electroencephalographic activity in these same bands in left frontal regions. It is expected that this study will promote research related to the analysis of electroencephalographic profiles and will favour the advancement of more precise and effective therapeutic processes in trauma intervention. © 2020 Psychologia Society. In this study, we used eye-tracking to investigate selective visual attention paid to congruent and incongruent audiovisual speech of Japanese infants (6 to 12 months old) and adults. Infants’ receptive and expressive language abilities at 12 months were measured through a questionnaire completed by their caregivers. We found that 6-month-olds looked at the mouth longer in the audiovisual congruent condition than in the incongruent condition, whereas 12-month-olds did not show any significant differences in time spent in looking at the mouth. Furthermore, the time spent looking at the mouth among 6-month-olds, in both the audiovisual congruent and incongruent conditions, was positively correlated with receptive language abilities with 12 month olds. These findings suggest that sensitivity to congruent and incongruent audiovisual speech changes during the first year, and attention to the speaker’s mouth at 6 months are good predictors of later receptive language abilities.
