For the experiments, I used plant by-products from beetroot, carrot and raspberry, which were extracted in 5% suspensions. The dielectric behaviour of the extracts was investigated in the frequency range 300-2400 MHz using an open-ended coaxial probe. For both the ultrasonic and microwave intensified procedures, the reported energy was 30, 45 and 60 kJ, respectively. Based on my research results, I found that the dielectric constant measured in the frequency range 700-900 MHz is closely related to the yield of total polyphenol and pectin regardless of the feedstock and treatment used, but the method has limitations due to the presence of components that affect the physical structure and the concentration of target components below the limit of detection. One of our main objectives was to see whether the different microwave-based pretreatment procedures can enhance biogas production by improving the biological availability of organic compounds. Results demonstrated that combining microwave irradiation with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles considerably increased SCOD (enhancement ratio was above 1.5), the rate of specific biogas production, and the total cumulative specific biogas volume (more than a threefold increment), while having no negative effect on the biomethane content. Furthermore, the assessment of the sludge samples’ dielectric properties (dielectric constant and loss factor measured at the frequency of 500 MHz) showed a strong correlation with SCOD changes (r = 0.9942, R 2 = 0.99), offering a novel method to evaluate pretreatment efficiency. The photocatalytic activities of the two modified membranes and their filtration performances were compared in detail. The significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity of the TiO2-Ag composite was proved using a methyl orange (MO) solution (c = 10−5 M) and a crude oil emulsion (c = 50 mg·L−1). The TiO2-Ag-coated membrane reduced the MO concentration by 87%, whereas the TiO2-modified membrane reached only a 46% decomposition. The photocatalytic reduction in the chemical oxygen demand of the emulsion was also ~50% higher using the TiO2-Ag-coated membrane compared to that of the TiO2-coated membrane. The photoluminescence measurements demonstrated a reduced electron/hole recombination, achieved by the Ag nanoparticle addition (TiO2-Ag), which also explained the enhanced photocatalytic activity. A significant improvement in the oil separation performance with the TiO2-Ag-coated membrane was also demonstrated: a substantial increase in the flux and flux recovery ratio (up to 92.4%) was achieved, together with a notable reduction in the flux decay ratio and the irreversible filtration resistance. Furthermore, the purification efficiency was also enhanced (achieving 98.5% and 99.9% COD and turbidity reductions, respectively). Contact angle, zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements were carried out to explain the results. SEM and AFM images revealed that on the TiO2-Ag-coated membrane, a less aggregated, more continuous, homogeneous, and smoother nanolayer was formed due to the ~50% more negative zeta potential of the TiO2-Ag nanocomposite compared to that of the TiO2. In summary, via Ag addition, a sufficiently hydrophilic, beneficially negatively charged, and homogeneous TiO2-Ag-coated PVDF membrane surface was achieved, which resulted in the presented advantageous filtration properties beyond the photocatalytic activity enhancement. AB - Pomegranate peel powder (PPP) is increasingly used as a bioadsorbent to decontaminate wastewaters due to its adsorptive characteristics. The application of nutrient-fortified bioadsorbents as alternatives to chemical fertilizers can provide an innovative and eco-friendly approach for sustainable waste management. Nevertheless, there is extremely limited information regarding their effects on the growth of agricultural crops. We investigated the effects of raw and nutrient-fortified PPPs on oilseed rape ( Brassica napus ). Our results showed that the concentration-dependent in vitro phytotoxicity of high PPP doses (germination indices were 109.6%, 63.9%, and 8.9% at the applied concentrations of 0.05%, 0.5%, and 5%) was diminished by the application of nutrient-fortified PPPs (germination indices were 66.0–83.4% even at the highest doses). In pot experiments, most PPP treatments (especially Raw-PPP and the mixture of N- and P-fortified PPPs) promoted the development of aboveground plant parts. Reorganization of the pattern of protein tyrosine nitration in the root tissues indicated that the plants were acclimated to the presence of PPPs, and thus, PPP treatment induced no or low-level stress. Our findings confirmed that several doses of PPP supplementation were beneficial for the model crop plant when applied in soil. We anticipate that our study will be a foundation for future investigations involving more plant species and soil types, which can contribute to the introduction of nutrient-fortified PPPs as sustainable biofertilizers. It has many advantages, such as reducing the number of experiments to be performed, which requires lower energy consumption and significantly less laboratory work. For more accurate data analysis and forecasting, mathematical models are used that analyse the relevance of the factors examined and the interaction effects between the factors. In this research, two experimental designs that use response surface methodology are presented, namely, the central composite design and the Box–Behnken design. After the general characterisation of the experimental designs, their application in membrane technology is presented.
