The concept of symmetry as a quantitative property instead of a binary question of 'yes' or 'no' is widely accepted and thoroughly investigated, for example, in molecular physics but also in engineering sciences, mainly in chemical engineering. Similarly to most of the articles written on this topic, our method is also based on the comparison of specific metrics of the analyzed structure and a reference one, i.e., which possesses the desired (perfect) symmetry. The deviation of the analyzed (imperfect) structure from the reference structure is quantified by one scalar. The novelty in our approach is that we consider not just the relative position of the nodes but also the normal stiffness of the truss members, even for structures with higher-order, i.e., polyhedral symmetries. For both geometric and material properties to be accounted for, the eigenvalues of the stiffness matrix were chosen as metrics. The difficulty lies in finding the reference structure which will be carried out based on energy principles. Managers in the same industry differ in respect of their willingness to adopt coopetition. To better understand coopetitive decision-making, we need a model whereby such decisions can be experimented with and analysed. An important prerequisite of such a model would be its capacity to measure the performance consequences of coopetitive interactions at both firm and relationship levels. We show that existing operationalisation has limited capacity to do that. Based on existing game theoretical constructs, we propose a new operationalisation of a coopetitive decision-making episode in horizontal business relationships using a two-step sequential game. We suggest developing what we term a “coopetitive composite solution matrix” by summing up the payoff functions of the two steps of the game. The suggested operationalisation has the capacity to measure all the potential performance consequences of a complex piece of coopetitive decision-making in an episode. In this way, the decision problem’s cognitive representation becomes straightforward and analysis of the impact of the behavioural attributes of managers on the actual decision-making process is unambiguous. This method allows the efficient and accurate deterministic computation of the time-dependent response probability density function by transforming the corresponding Chapman–Kolmogorov equation to a matrix–vector multiplication using high-order numerical time-stepping and interpolation methods. Additionally, the SMM-PI approach yields the computation of the joint probability distribution for response and impact velocity, as well as the time between impacts and other important characteristics. The method is applied to a nonlinear oscillator with a pair of impact barriers, and to a linear oscillator with a single barrier, providing relevant densities and analysing energy accumulation and absorption properties. We validate the results with the help of stochastic Monte-Carlo simulations and show the superior ability of the introduced formulation to compute accurate response statistics.
